Previously Purchased PSN Games Will Not Transfer to PlayStation 4, Says Sony

Well here’s a bit of completely crappy news.

Sony Worldwide Studios boss Shuhei Yoshida has told Engadget that the PlayStation 4 will not allow you to import PlayStation 3 PSN games.

That means that the library of titles you’ve built up on your home console will not be playable on the PlayStation 4, should you buy one. And neither will save games.

The difficulty in allowing PS3 games to be played on PS4 is said to relate to the vast differences between the two consoles’ architecture. The PS3 runs on  Cell tech, while the PS4 is basically a PC.

It means that previous-gen titles are not currently compatible in any way with PS4, although Sony will attempt to make older games playable on the system “in some form.”

Let’s hope that Sony is planning of leveraging some of the Gaikai streaming technology to bring our PSN libraries to PlayStation 4.

  • well that sucks.
  • And I was almost set on buying one too.
  • Just another reason to keep my ps3.
  • I am beyond agitated. Sony sells us on all the social media features, but then treats something as basic as backwards compatability even of digital content as something they might get around to working AFTER they expect us to shell out around $500?! The gall of this move is staggering.
  • Another reason people prefer PC all games purchased on steam are always going to be there to play.
  • Well, damn.
  • It is annoying, but I'm honestly not sure why anyone would have expected any form of backwards compatibility, knowing the history and the differences in architecture between the PS3 and... well, pretty much everything else in the history of gaming.
  • There is always such a thing as software emulation, fair enough disc based games don't work but downloaded games too? I can see Xbox not doing this.
  • Lol man thats redonk. So like am i going to have to keep my ps3 on my shelf when i buy a ps4 just to play my psn games on. I mean Sony is a major electrons company they can probably figure out a way really easily. They might as well be like " we dont feel like it and we want more money".
  • It was a given that those who get their games primarily through digital download would get screwed in the long run. Disappointing, but not entirely unexpected. @5: There's no such thing as "always" -- what happens if the proposed SteamBox is a bust and the company folds? Maybe not the likeliest scenario, but still. If you don't physically have something, it isn't yours.
  • I guess I am in the minority when I say I will buy my PS4 for PS4 games... and keep my PS3 to play you know my er PS3 games?
  • Sucks, but what you gonna do? In the end the new console is there to play new games plus it's not like your PS3 will spontaneously combust when the PS4 rolls out. Hell, I've still got my PS2 which I'll play every now and then.
  • “in some form.” $$$
  • @11 What about when the PS3 servers go down in a few years cant play those games online anymore.
  • Lmao, thats one way to piss off the loyal customers of PSN, haha Oh Sony you know how to do it, stop teasing us ;)
  • Time to watch the psn sales drop
  • Nintendo pretty much did the same thing with the Wii to Wii U (Although there is a transfer tool, it's still through the Wii Channel only). You'd figure Sony would learn from this, especially since the Vita has cross-buy capabilities. I really don't get this angle.
  • @14 the PSN isn't going anywhere. Game companies will shut down their servers for specific games long before you'd have to worry about Sony dropping support. It's not like you're going to wake up one day and the PS3 can no longer connect to PSN.
  • Why would anyone who intends to get a PS4 buy a PSN (PS3) title. It is like a $60 rental. :)
  • Thats the reason I buy New games on DISC form...but since they wont play on PS4, it no longer matters, I cant wait to get the console and collect new games for it! now since the PS4 is now a PC..get all your games Disc/digital, its easier now to transfer those to PS5 in 2020!! =)
  • One more comment, and then I'm done. I got a PS3 two months after it launched and pretty much only played PS2 games on it for months, because there was nothing else around to play. And then Uncharted came out and I've never played another PS2 game since (other than the HD collections). So the answer is simple. Either keep both consoles or just don't buy a PS4 until you feel like the game library is significant enough that you won't feel the need to go back and play PS3 games. No one is forcing you to go out and buy one on launch day. Personally, I'm going to wait and see the full launch library, but most likely it will be next summer at the earliest before I'll think about getting a PS4. It just doesn't make sense to drop $500 (or even $400) if there are only two or three games I want to play on the new system.
  • So Does That Mean Ps3 Trophies Won't Be Carrying Over Then ? So It Will Be Like A Whole Start Over.
  • @22 No I think they carry other when they showed the user interface the guy had 2700 trophies.
  • We knew this already when Sony was moving away from the Cell. If people want backwards compatibility so much, I say make an attachment that provides hardware or software emulation. But don't put it in every machine since it'll mean a more expensive PS4.
  • Does this mean I will have to buy all the God Of War games again.... I hope PS4 trophies are stackable :)
  • In some form? *sigh* Always the way to make a buck or two, no?
  • Grah! Well, there's one reason to wait a couple years to get a PS4. It's not like I replay games... but I don't want to leave anything I like unfinished.
  • Continue playing PS3 get your moneys worth out of your library and it gives them time to work out the kinks remember how shit PS3 was when it first came out.
  • @23 i was Thinking That But Sony Could Have Just Made An Account An Just Stuck Trophies On It Or It Could Have Been A Game Testers Account For New Ps4 Games. He Did Only Have 7 Plats. Hope You Don't Have 2 Start Over, but people Better Keep Their Ps3 For Unfinished Games Or They Will Never 100% them.
  • You all knew this was gonna happen, so don't bitch. Personally I could care less because I don't download games from the PSN, rarely would I snag one. You want a serious piece of hardware that compares to a PC and a console price... I wouldn't want a PS4 for 1k that plays everything. But I would wager that within a year after release, all those PSN titles will be back for another round of purchasing. And the funny part, all you whiners will by them again.
  • Why are people so upset? I'll agree that it would be nice to have backwards compatibility, but if adds an extra cost to the PS4, then I'd rather go without it. If you want to play your old PS3 games, then why not play them on the PS3?
  • Hahahahahahaha biggest most epic fucking fail ever!!!! Thats all the pr bollocks about everything being easilly connected and accessible thrown straight out of the window. Seriously theres not a single reason right now to even look at a next gen console let alone forking out money for one
  • Fair enough. But I better not being charged to play already purchased content over stream later and get my PSN-purchased games free once they start to pop up as PS3 Classics. Otherwise that's exactly the kind of "service" which will drive people away from Sony. Just a side note: Steam allows usage on Windows, Mac and Linux with only one purchase on as many devices as I like. It's still a long time to launch and MS hasn't come out yet.
  • @11 Couldn't agree more. Well said.
  • what about my plus games
  • #32 Are you an idiot? Next gen games and the future of gaming are the reason to purchase a PS4. You already have a system to play the current gen games you own. If you want, I can sell you another PS3 for the same price as a launch PS4 so you can have another system to play the same games you already own on.
  • Next they'll say trophies won't transfer over. Guess I'll have to keep my PS3 then. Took so long for them to get good PS1 (and bad) PS2 games on PSN and now they will have to start all over again? I'd like to know what will happen to people who have a year+ of PS+ left. Will it keep going for the PS3 or will it transfer over to the PS4? Will their be a PS+ on PS4 or will there be one for PS3 & a different one for PS4?
  • O-EFFin-Kay. Sony, NOW, in the midst of all this "good-feeling" vibe these past few weeks, you're EFFin' up. Disc-based backwards compatibility not being available for PS4? I was alright with that, I have those games bought at discounted prices (or PS+ free) in the store, for the lifetime of PSN/my account. NOW...you're telling me that I WON'T have ANYTHING from this generation on my PSN for PS4. So...that kinda tells me that...you probably will have a totally new network. And a totally new trophy-based system. Way to keep fans loyal to the Sony family...*smGDh* You could have possibly ended this generation of console wars before it even started, why let Microsoft back into the fight like this? At the end of the day, I have no brand loyalty. I'm always looking for the best value. Looks like I'll be waiting on Microsoft to see what their next move will be... EFFin' ridiculous...
  • Dont really care. I'll just play PS3 games on my PS3...
  • pathetic.
  • i agree with #11 why buy a PS4 to play older games? if i want to play PS1 games i would get my PS1 out and use that, same with PS2 and PS3
  • i never thought i would say this, but maybe i will wait and see what microsoft offers up then. also why the hell are they calling it playstation 4 when they have essentially cut all ties with the previous consoles? the only thing they seem to have maintained is our player profiles.
  • Well that sucks. I guess that means I either need to keep my PS3 (not something I planned on whenever I purchase a PS4) or I need to 100%plat all of my downloaded titles. Hurumph!
  • Most smart people keep their older systems anyways and you can say all you want about trading it in to put towards a new system, but honestly, if you have to trade in a system in order to afford another one, then you shouldn't be buying systems to begin with, you should be focusing on priorities.
  • So what about all the games bought through PS+? I'm thinking that the summer will bring news that PS+ is closing and PSN becomes subs based. Steam is looking better every day, Valve at least knows what the word "sale" means...
  • Play your PS3 games on PS3. Your PS4 games on PS4. Simples!
  • The not been able to play your PSN library doesnt really bother me but what would decide wether or not I buy a ps4 on release in backwards compatability with ps3 games as my main singleplayer gaming is spent on Jrpg's which usually get released more often as the console ages.
  • At least is not because the greed, but because hardware differences and limitations. Im ok with that. Anyway, my ps3 ain't going anywhere.
  • Heh, and here I thought they had advanced the technology and yet, they still can't make the damn thing backwards compatible. So don't you worry, when the PS5 comes out in another few years, you wont be able to play your PS4 games on that one.
  • @46 and so say all us sentimental fools. Unfortunately, there are going to be people that won't be able to afford it right off the bat. Therefore they will want to trade in old faithful.
  • If they release the same games on PS4 PSN then they should be free for people have bought it on ps3.
  • i keep seeing people getting thumbs up for the keep yoour ps3 for ps3 and who cares about BC but the thing is for trophy hunters(your on a site for it...) if you lose all that then all the hard work you spent over the years is thrown out i can see why people would get very upset over losing troph info and not being able to play games they paid for most people can only afford one system some can afford 2 but the ps4 is going to be a money pit im sure those DS4 controllers will be in the 50-80$ range cuz of the very un-needed touch pad so if anything goes wrong your shelling out a ton just for that alone there are many things sony is doing wrong with the ps4 that will make people not support the new system BC trophies and psn games are the big touch subjects and so far their making bad moves on all front's ditching ps3 BC psn BC which makes ZERO sense since pc's can pretty much play any system game and psn games are even easier to code then disc based locks so their reason behind not doing psn games is just plain stupid
  • I'm not sure about the ps4 now. Not backwards compatible. And prob have to pay to steam them even though ps1,2&3 are on the shelf. And can't redownload psn games? I don't know if the trophy data will transfer either. If it doesn't then I might go for the steam box.
  • I'm covered for all backwards compatability issues then as I have ps1/2/3 and psp so no issue wiv me, just don't see the need in ps4 as there's no new tech there, it's just a stronger ps3 really in my eyes
  • @44 what a stupid comment. What right do you have to tell people what they should or shouldn't do with their PS3? Prick. I do find it funny how this essentially makes PS+ redundant, after so many people rated it, now you won't be able to play any of your 'free' games on PS4. Smart from $ony, and so glad I never fell for it.
  • PS+ will carry over to PS4, it's just the games that won't.
  • @52: It's not senseless. It's a whole new architecture, it's like installing your WP7 games into Windows - same OS (sorta) but different platform. Just doesn't work. You also can't play Direct3D PC games on Linux, because Linux only supports OpenGL from stock and some Windows XP programs refuse to run under W7. You have to port your games for different kernels. The only way for both - disc and digital - is to emulate the old environment. It's more wait and see thing with digital, as the new architecture is close to XBox / PC, so it shouldn't be too much hassle for 3rd party / multiplatform games. Or they figure out how to emulate it, don't know how resource heavy a Cell emulation would be. But as said: They better don't charge us for previously purchased content.
  • @52 I love people who just assume. Its been less than a day since they announce PS4. They say that PSN games from your PS3 wont work on a PS4 (which makes sense - PS4 isnt Cell based) and you automatically assume that trophies are gone? To quote an overused meme - "Boy, that escalated quickly." Wait for factual info before making shit up. Also, commas, periods and line breaks are important.
  • I have never understood people who buy these new systems and then complain they can't play their old games! Play new stuff, if you wanna play old stuff, then keep your old hardware.
  • to be expected I guess.
  • does that make this announcement a bit contradictory, http://www.ps3trophies.org/news/news-9141-PlayStation-4--Gaikai-Tech-Can-Stream-Any-PlayStation-Game-to-Your-Console.html just make the psn games available in gaiken then
  • I pretty much expected this, so i'm not too upset. Besides, I prefer my games on physical media, so I haven't spent $60 on a downloaded game.
  • @22 & 29 Please stop. You're hurting my eyes.
  • @36 no im no idiot but sony are complete fucking idiots....sorry but if you buy a blu ray player wouldnt you be pissed if you couldnt play standard dvds on it? Or I could be a dick like you and say hey dude why watch a film in standard def if blu ray is the future here ill sell you a dvd ayer the same price as a blu ray, get fucking real its called convenience, I dont want multiple consoles on my entertainment unit. If the ps2 could play ps1 games then sorry for thinking that over 10 years later id at LEAST be able to carry over my digital content onto the 4th gen of play station (given digital is the supposed future) what kind of a leap forward in technology is not being backwards compatible? Simple answer is it isnt a leap forward its a cheap tactic at making sure we payed over the odds for digital content with no way of carrying it forward......ps1 games made it to ps3 so why not ps4? I currently play crash bandicoot 1-3 and final fantasy 6-9, I also play god of war 1-3 should I have to dig out my ps1 and ps2 just to play them? Fuck no...and I dont so theres fuck all excuses to be had, this also isnt an issue on pcs so again epic fucking fail for sony
  • i dont care.new console so i am fine whit it.who would whant to play old ps3 games on a new ps4
  • There's an awful lot of ignorance here. For one, to all the people saying "keep your old console if you want to play old games", what about those of us that have more than two consoles? My TV is already getting gangbanged with all the shit it has hooked up to it now. Not only that, but if I was to just drop everything and move on to the PS4, what about the amazing games of the PS3? Should I just stop playing God of War because it's not new enough? I bet most of the people saying this shit only play what's hip and recent. Once it gets old, they drop it for something that everyone is talking about and never look back. Secondly, the older PSN games like X-Men and MvC2 are going to get shafted even if Sony puts the classic PSN stuff up on the new PSN. The only way around this is Gaikai, but how are they going to maintain the online features when the games are considered obsolete? Like I expect X-Men to be running forever, but come on. I'm full PS4-support, but the lack of backwards compatibility with Sony recently is just sad.
  • I'd be disappointed, but complete lack of BC was totally obvious as soon as they said PS4 had an x86 processor. This isn't really the PS4's fault either, it's the PS3's fault. Sony had two choices here: fix the architecture so it isn't shit this time around, or keep Cell and thus keep having the hardest platform to develop for and frequently have the worst versions of games. Remember when you all were flipping your shit because Mafia 2 had less grass on PS3? Guess what, I'm sure Mafia 3 will have plenty of grass in the PS4 version thanks to Sony giving Cell the boot. And the good news is, unless Sony completely fucks up again when PS5 rolls around, all the PS4 stuff should be backwards compatible.
  • PS Vita trophies show on PS3, no reason they won't both be on PS4. Ps4 can't play PS3 games...oh well I never planned to get rid of it. I have 400+GB of games I don't want to re-DL. I wouldn't mind PS3-4 cross buy though. This only excludes PS3, not PS1 or PS2.
  • I was originally planning on buying a PS4 with a hope that PS3 games could run better... smoother... and have faster loading times. Oh well.
  • I have multiples of hundreds of dollars invested in my PS3 games. They just screwed themselves out of my money. Talk about shooting yourself in the foot. I won't even consider a PS4.
  • meh, so i'll keep the PS3 & PS4 next to each other and play anything i want.
  • @70 lol sony are shaking in their little booties.
  • @66 No worries. I'm sure you'll be able to redownload it on the PS4 for £20 as a UHD Collection. Might have them all packaged up in one lot or two again. ;)
  • @73 As much as your sarcasm disgusts me, I believe your prediction is spot-on. Just another Fruitbox Cashgrab. This time, sponsored by Sony...*smGDh*
  • Ino some people are saying keep your ps3 to play your old games, but its more convenient to be able to play all games on one machine. I don't want have a ps4, a ps3 and ps2 all out cluttering my room. Not only loads of wires everywhere but they take up space. When Sony market there we consoles they don't just sell it as a games console the sell it has all your entertainment in one. So why should we have keep all our consoles to play some classic games we love. Istill want be able to play classic games and we shouldn't really have to pay for them again.
  • I can get past disc games not working nothing new there but when you buy digital games you should be able to take them with you great way to keep the gamers in mind sony get that advice from cashcom er capcom
  • I think we all have to wait and see until more stuff is announced. The big conventions like PAX, E3 and others internationally haven't happened. I don't see why Sony give out EVERYTHING right now. I don't think that's a wise strategy.
  • That's disappointing... then again I won't have a reason to get rid of my PS3 given the large physical collection I've accumulated and since the PS4 unsurprisingly won't be backwards compatible. Oh well.
  • Guess I'm keeping my second hand ps3 slim, I cant live without the money I saved thanks to the home versions of house of the dead 4 and a version of daytona that actually works :c
  • I'm just going to trade everything in and get the PS4 anyway I'm not too bothered about the games I've already played.
  • @44 OS, I usually don't have issue with what you say but that particular comment is one of the dumbest thoughts of reasoning I have ever read. I hate to break it to you but in case you haven't noticed, the world economy isn't exactly thriving. So there is no shame in trying to save a few bucks on your console. And making the association that only dumb people trade in there old systems is moronic. Maybe you should put a little more thought into your post next time so you don't come off so ridiculously.
  • Jesus, there is so much bitching for BC going on. Seriously, as much as you people want BC, how often is BC going to be used compared to standard PS4 play? Face it, people who want BC are in the minority. Why should Sony spend money trying to incorporate something a small percentage of gamers would even use? It's baffling. It's not like you are entitled to the game on the next-gen console. That's just the nature of console gaming. You have games made and optimized on a closed platform, so backwards compatibility requires some kind of hardware or software emulation, which means unnecessary costs on the next gen console. And new consoles are expensive enough. So, for all of you who can't live without playing years-old games or love to sell your current console and bitch because you can't play your games anymore, YOU should pay the price of rebuying it for next gen. I don't feel like paying even more money for a feature I know I won't use enough to justify.
  • So when Bioware said they wanted to make a sequal to ME 3 instead of a prequal because they wanted us to keep our choices, how will that work if the system can't read our ps3 save files? Also content we bought digital not being accessed on the PS4 is bs. The same games will flood the ps store in the following months, games we have already bought on ps3. Really thought it was cool "building your digital collection" as so many ads have suggested only to get shafted when ps4 comes out.
  • #12, isn't it a little messed up that you are going to have to have 3 systems if you want to play Playstation 2 and Playstation 3 games in addition to the PS4 games. that's the issue here, I don't expect them to make PS2 games available, and I'll concede PS3 games as well, but I should only have to bust out my PS3 if I want to play PS3 games not PSN games. Now I probably won't be picking up nearly as many games as I would have through PSN while I await my shift to the PS4. Hopefully the new Xbox doesn't have this same crap, I've had that much longer and have much more content on it. Here's to hoping Sony sees the negative reaction to this and changes their policy on PSN content.
  • I can't download any of my old PSN games to Vita either, arguably for the same reason. Can't say I'm too fussed about it, it's definately not a deal breaker.
  • What people don't seem to be understanding is that simply allowing PSN content to roll over to the PS4 isn't as easy as flipping a switch on policy. From a technical standpoint these games aren't even coded to run in the architecture of the new system. Should developers be porting or recoding already released titles or innovating with newly developed content. I for one am not terribly upset by this, in fact even expected it. Yeah, it would have been a nice feature, but it just doesn't make sense on so many levels. Here's what I'm sure will be a much less popular comment...read any of the EULAs for your disc based games. You no more "own" those games than a digital PSN game. You own a plastic disc and the right to access it's content, not the game itself. Copyright laws need to evolve for sure, but understanding the current system doesn't hurt either.
  • 720 it is. Ive spent a lot of money on the PSN on PS1 classics and add ons. For it to not transfer is the last straw.
  • I'll be holding onto the PS3 awhile then it seems, absolutely nothing about the new console makes me think it's worth it. If I wanted a Wii U, I'd get one. If I wanted something without backwards compatibility I'd buy a new PS3. If I wanted something that has touch controls I'd buy a DS.
  • I agree with a lot of you being upset about this. However in Sonys defense. These psn games are ps3 games, not ps4. They have made some compatibility options with streaming ps3 games already. The fact that you may only be able to play these lower priced games on ps3(the console it released on)does not bring down any of my hopes for the ps4. Imagine how great the psn games will be on ps4. I'll probably forget about most of my current psn games.
  • why is it so hard for people to understand that disc based games and psn games are both still using the same cell architecture. if ps3 disc games dont work, obviously psn games wont either. they might have them streaming with that gaikai service but really, its not that big of a deal. no one bitched when your snes didnt play nes games or your n64 didnt play snes games.
  • and knowing sony 'in some form' means the most costliest way
  • It's just a way to get us to buy the same games again. Sony will eventually make the games available for PS4.
  • Not the worst thing in the world. It would've been awesome to have everything on one console, though.
  • I'm sorry I think this is a stupid move b Sony, and I am a huge Sony fan. I owned all their system and even have PS Plus. What a huge letdown if you ask me. I hope they change their minds. If M$ has their digital game compatible with their new console, it will be a huge hit for Sony. How does a company want to keep their loyal fans, when the company is not loyal to their fans? I hope Sony re-thinks their decision on at least digital content. I could of swore they said SEN was going to always be with you.
  • This sucks, why cant i play my Super Nintendo games on N64? Damn you Sony!
  • @94 This...
  • Kinda glad I don't have any...yet...
  • I'm not really surprised about PS3 games not going over, but what about FFVII and other PS1 classics? Not compatible as well? Hope we don't have to start trophy count from ZERO again. Didn't see anything so far that tells me otherwise. The picture with the guy with a lot of trophies means nothing except "I love PS4 so much I never stop playing and get many trophies", doesn´t mean they carried over. I can just see them now..."Oh the trophies are specific to each console..." Very, very angry/disapointed if that's the case.
  • And shit like this is why I won't be rushing out to buy a PS4. If I get one, it'll be further down the line.
  • "The PS3 runs on Cell tech, while the PS4 is basically a PC." .. ok... so its a PC. a more powerful hardware, make it play/emulate PS3 games. Its a PC for crying out loud. I love my Playstations but srsly here, a PS4 cant even play PS3 games?? If you tell me it cant and wont play PS1 and PS2 games ok. But NOT play Ps3 games at least!? I guess this is pretty smart and shady to make a system to purposely not play older system games. I mean thats the only way to keep people still buy Ps3 when Ps4 is out because we all know Ps3 like all other systems break in time. and with that huge library of Ps3 games, people will probably buy another PS3 to play them than sell all their PS3 games for cheap cheap.
  • Noooooo!!! Make it compatible!
  • At this point all I care about is trophies transferring over. Everyone says they will, but I want the tards at Sony to say it
  • @95 Because those are consoles from the 90s that both ran on different sets of catridges which would have made backwards compatibility a pricing nightmare. Today however we live in a world where emulation is a very viable solution but Sony won't do this because eventually they can re-post said games on PSN and charge you again.
  • Might have to wait a year or 2 before bying one my back log is massive. wow sony wow lost abit more respect for you.
  • If the PS4 is effectively a PC then how hard would it be to write a PS3 emulator & run it on the PS4 to provide backwards compatibility. Guess it's just another way for them to make money by making people re-purchase older loved PS3 titles. Bit sucky Sony.
  • No PS4 for me. I've sunk so much money into my PS3, if none of my stuff transfers over, I'm done with anything beyond this system. Like said before...it's just a way to charge us again for this stuff later down the road.
  • Expecting to be able to use a program/game that has been developed and *optimized* for a specific hardware with specific instructions, on a new system with a completely different hardware more akin to a normal pc is really void of any logic. I surely didn't expect to be able to use all my programs/games when I upgraded from Windows 7 to Windows 8 keeping the same hardware. You people are too clueless about the world of software development. Do you expect that the same software can work on an Android deviec and an Apple one? Maybe the app exists for both, but is a different piece of software. Get a clue and stop whining. The only real point here is if they will ever provide whatever kind of service to play such titles on the PS4 and if it will be free or not.
  • More and more I'm realizing that selling my PS3 is a stupid idea! Lol I kept my PS2 and now I'm keeping this! :)
  • @29 Why Are You Capitalizing The First Letter Of Each Word ?
  • well if it is a pc, just put in a ps3 pc chip. sony.........
  • I guess everyone finds something to complain about. I'm also guessing everyone missed the tidbit in the unveiling that cloud is working on a way to play ps1-ps4 games. Just give it time. I'm pretty sure everyone here has a PS3 already, so just keep it and play what you want. I'm currently in the process of 100%ing everything I started, so I can clean up my profile. Buy the new console for new features/games etc and don't look to the past. People are going to bitch regardless. If the ps4 put in the Cell Tech from ps3, it would be excessively expensive. If they take it out, people complain b/c they can't play old games. Get over it people and let Sony come out with a quality console at an affordable price. That would not be attainable if they allowed every perk.
  • Let's keep Playstation Network just the way it is, otherwise don't try to steal my name...
  • Over the last 10 years or so, a lot of people have spent hundreds (and even thousands) of their hard-earned dollars on games for both the PS3 and Xbox 360. Sony making the CHOICE to simply disregard this fact and ignore backwards-compatibility speaks volumes to their lack of loyalty to their fans. And as upsetting as this news is to consumers, just imagine how upset game developers, distributors, and retailers must be... because this backwards-compatibility CHOICE Sony has made will definitely hurt sales. In fact, it already has. I've cancelled my pre-orders of these PS3 exclusive games: "The Last of Us" and "Beyond: Two Souls" because of this PS4 announcement. I've also changed my PS3 pre-orders of "Tomb Raider" and "Dead Island: Riptide" to the Xbox 360 versions.
  • @23, all of that was basically photoshopped. I saw a screen of a "game library" that was all generic games. It was just a mock-up.
  • Anyone here care about backwards compatible PS3's that plays PS2 games? No? Not surprising. Everyone obviously moved on since PS2 isn't relevant anymore. This is exactly the same situation. PS4 is going to play awesome new games that are bigger and badder. How much more obvious does it have to be? Inevitably Sony will re-release these games as collector editions of some sort. Kinda like the PS2 HD collections. If you still don't agree, just think about what you're all arguing about. "I want a PS4 to play PS3 games!" Let that sink in for a moment. Keep your PS3's for PS3 games and use the PS4 to play PS4 games. Very simple.
  • I could potentially see a shift of the fanbase that Sony has right now. I'm talking a split between the next-gen gamers and the last generation. Until I read this news I really though I was going to get the 4 but yaaa IDK bout that anymore... I just said the other day that if they try to take away the games we have purchased than I won't buy it. Now I have to eat my words if I do get one... shitty but hey if it turns out better than the 3 in some way, I'm there. For real though half of us part ways to the 4 and the rest just stick with the 3..... very plausible no?
  • Most likelly we will all get a PS4 in due time. I will wait until there is a nice game library available. No point in rushing to buy it if there´s only 1 game I want to play. Also I don't want to pay a high price, so I might very well wait for 2-3 years before I buy it like I did with the PS3.
  • I've already preordered my ps4, absolutely can-not wait!! I'm looking forwards to Watch Dogs and killzone SF, I'm really only interested in what next gen can do at this stage... But it is a bitter pill to swallow that the corporate world is so willing to cannibalise its own consumer base with bullshit like this... No backwards compatibility because of "different architecture", come on, what are we talking here, ceph integrating into apple. Ffs, they could make this work very easily, gaikai already has the solution and they're already flaunting it! This is money making spin and frankly it's rude... Still, there's nothing in the world that would deter me from next gen and its glorious graphics, we console gamers have been in the Stone Age long enough. It'll be years before I get rid of my ps3 anyway - if ever, so guess I'm just as happy to still give my ps3 some attention in the downtime between shiny next gen titles.
  • Well that blow =/. I'm not really shocked or mad. I have my original 60 gb gen 1 ps3 that doesnt have a blueray drive and my ps3 skim so not having a console to play on doesnt really bother me. People can kick and scream at Sony all they want, feel cheat and what not, but who really was going to use half the memory of the ps4 (I know my collection is 240+ GB now) on release day, when they could hit on on there ps3 in 15 sec?
  • Goodbye playstation 3 games i miss you
  • I don't mind. Especially since I don't intend to get rid of my PS3, ever. =/ Can't wait for the PS4, though!
  • if i cant play my ps3 game on it then i don't need it i am not rebuilding my library because they want more money and you to start over purchasing new games shame on you SONY
