Speaking to Resident Evil: Revelations Producer, Masachika Kawata at Capcom's UK HQ yesterday, we asked whether one day we might see a reboot for what has increasingly become a third-person action survival horror series in recent years. Could Resident Evil ever return to its roots as a more considered, puzzle-laden affair a la Resident Evil 1 to 3?

"I think it's very difficult to literally go back to our roots on that and take gameplay mechanics and styles that we did fifteen years ago and redo them now," Kawata told PS3T. "Revelations' goal was to go back to the series' roots in terms of the content and horror, while at the same time trying to modernise the gameplay, because we think that's what gamers want."

However, Kuwata went on to explain that the future of the series could be defined by fan feedback. "It'll be interesting to see the reaction to Resident Evil: Revelations on console and that feedback and reaction will definitely inform decisions like that in the future."

Nonetheless, Kuwata sees a return to the series' roots something that would be "very difficult".

"For myself, I see it as something that would be very difficult to pull off," he said.

With Resident Evil: Revelations also winning plaudits upon its release on the Nintendo 3DS, we asked where it was Kuwata thought Resident Evil 6 had misstepped.

"I think one main difference between the two games is Revelations' has this focus on this one aspect of Resident Evil, which is survival horror," Kuwata explained.

"Resident Evil 6's aim was to be appealing to a wide variety of people. It's really something that had a 'dramatic horror' or 'horror as entertainment' concept at its core that was appealing to a wider audience, and that's something that majorly factored into the difference in reception."
