"it’s also a win for parents because they can be more confident that games that are age-inappropriate will not be available to people under 18. " There will always be 12 year olds playing COD. Game ratings are redundant. Yes, they stop kids from purchasing these games (Rated M), but that doesn't stop their parents from buying them FOR them |

@4 Exactly. There should be penalties for buying FOR minors much like with alcohol. Mainly because there's nothing more annoying then a 12 year old screaming over the mic >_ |

Hi, I'm an australian up way too late. I played Mortal kombat and boosted the 10 ranked wins...my god couldn't go online with people from new zealand with my american copy, wtf region lock? But my main concern with this R18+ is they can still refuse to classify games, meaning games can still be banned despite R18+.... Time will tell if this was a waste of time or god send for us. |

@4 Worse... Two of those 12 year olds playing Call Of Duty are my cousins... and they're good at the game. *Really* good. No interest in Single Player, but they're great in MP. |

This is good news, more choice for adult gamers down under and more protection for devs/publishers of adult games. I got really tired, really quickly of the witch-hunts orchestrated by Fox News in the US and the Daily Mail in the UK, blaming violent games for children's behaviour. The very games they blamed were all adult-certificated and should never have been played by kids in the first place. I know some of you more mature teenagers will object to me saying this, but I hope parents get prosecuted for buying adult games for minors. It happens with videos, alcohol and tobacco, why should it not happen for games? It would be interesting to watch dithering, spineless parents having to chose between court and saying "no" to their fucked up, spoiled little brats. |

@1,2: Why? Youth protection only affects people who are not old enough. Every full aged person can more or less easily import their games if they desire. And frankly, there are some good reasons to not promote games like Manhunt to 12-year-old - no matter how mature they feel themselves. @4: There are. In Germany you have to pay a hefty fee if your store is caught - which is usually taken right back from the offending employee who'll likely lose his job in addition. Even my father (50+) has to show his ID if he buys 18+ stuff in most bigger shops. They'll copy the year of birth on the receipt, so you can't claim your money back because your kid illegally bought this game. As for the dumb parents: The age restrictions are specifically for them as a guideline. Of course there'll always be some who simply don't care, but it's the same with everything - e.g. taking your kids to fast food chains because you don't can't be bothered to cook. Are guidelines for a healthy nutrition therefore redundant? |

| @4 so true. When i was working in target when GTA4 came out this fat bitch came in with her 7 year old son. Wanted to buy it. I Told her that its a violent mature game and probably not wise to get it for a 7 year old. She looked me dead in the eye and told me She didnt need advice on how to raise her child. |

| @14 It did, but the actual commissioning of the classification was set to happen in January. Shame we had to wait that long, somehow doubt it'll be retroactive so I won't be able to get a local copy of The Walking Dead :( |

| Took them long enough. Also, banning a game in the US isn't completely unheard of. If a game is rated AO, it's a virtual ban since most stores won't sell it and Sony, Microsoft, and Nintendo refuse to green light them. However, if they can tone it down enough to get it rated M, it's released. It doesn't happen often, but it has (Manhunt 2 is the most recent I can think of). |
