Prince of Persia creator Jordan Mechner is bringing his 1984 side-scrolling beat 'em up Karateka (announced back in February) to the PlayStation Network, meaning a return for the string of increasingly challenging one-on-one battles on your journey to rescue a kidnapped princess called Mariko from an evil warlord. Ah, classic.

The Batman animated series and X-Men comic book artist, Jeff Matsuda is providing the game's distinctive art style, while Grammy award-winning composer Christopher Tin is on soundtrack duties. He won his Grammy for the Civilisation IV soundtrack, in case you're wondering.

Karateka will be heading to PSN soon. A price and actual date has yet to be confirmed, but you can check out some of the first screenshots below. There's six to eyeball in the gallery.

Am I alone in thinking this looks a bit rubbish? Hmm... I think I'll have to play the demo first before I decide to purchase this...

I only ever played the original on the Famicom, but I'm sure it wasn't the best port.
Mechner has done some grea things with POP so ill keep an open mind on this.

Ah, memories. Used to play this one on the Apple II-C. Not sure it would hold up almost 30 years later, though; it was a very primitive game.
