Obsidian Counting Down to Mysterious RPG Reveal

Obsidian Entertainment is counting down to the announcement of a mystery new RPG.

The studio’s homepage has been changed to feature the image of a dragon munching on its own tail, with a number in the center. When the site launched the number was 4, prompting everyone to speculate that Dungeon Siege IV was about to be revealed. Today, however, that number has changed to 3.

So yeah, it’s a countdown clock, which is due to end on Friday evening, UK time.

Beneath the image, various snippets of cryptic writing have appeared. Initially the site read, “What do the words mean? Nothing. The Dirge of Eír Glanfath is sound without form, a lone voice crying out in mourning because it must.”

It currently reads, “The book unread is unwritten. The reason we don’t explain it is the reason we use it. Its power is in its mystery. That is the Leaden Key, in part, in whole. Is it clear?” Digging for truth buries the seeker.”

Clicking on the dragon image leads you to a speculation forum titled “Project X Speculation & Discussion,” with the description, “This is a forum for Obsidian's next RPG endeavor. So secret not even its project codename is yet being revealed. Speculate here...”

One particularly revealing thread is called “i am so hhorney," posted by a chap called “fart.” That may or may not be relevant.

Fans have already begun to poke around in the page’s source code, uncovering even more cryptic info. There was initially a section that read, “X . X X . X X To tenderness, fellowship. To fellowship, vigilance. So bring we all to the Night Market. I am the Spindle of Esenath. Know me by my light and stand with me in darkness.”

It has now updated to, “X. X X. T X Two centuries ago, your divine champion told the people of Dyrwood to grovel at his feet. If you’ve come on pilgrimage to the blasted crater that was our reply, Godhammer Citadel is *that* way.”

So, combining the info at our fingertips with our considerable gaming knowledge and expertise, Team X360A put our heads together this morning to deduce the precise identity of the mysterious Obsidian RPG. And we still haven’t got a fucking clue.

Sorry.

It'll probably never make it to ps3 anyway because they won't be able to fix all the bugs in it

You'd have to have some serious mental deficiencies to buy an Obsidian game at launch. Of course, some people apparently think Demon's Souls was made by Obsidian...I rest my case.

It's Obsidian. Not Bethesda, which made the very buggy Fallout 3 and the somewhat buggy recent Elder Scrolls games. Yes, they made Fallout New Vegas, which had plenty of bugs, but I'd suspect that's the fault of using Bethesda's Fallout engine, not Obsidian.

But, no, this is Obsidian, as in Black Isle. They've made Baldur's Gate, Knight's of the Old Republic, Neverwinter Nights. Alpha Protocol wasn't really a AAA game, but it was a solid game, easily as enjoyable as Deus Ex 3. At worst, any game they release should be paid attention to, and considered at length.

Why this hate on Obsidian? They mostly developed sequels using what they got from their predecessors (e.g. Bethesda - who didn't released one single game without major issues on PS3 and yet get a lot of love).
Granted Alpha Protocol had it's issues, but like every game coming from them it excelled in what it was about: morals, character development, freedom of (story impacting) choice.
Everyone's yelling about stronger immersion and dares in game design, yet nearly every developer who actually tries to pleas these needs get stomped to the ground.

@7 It's fairly obvious to anyone that Demon Soul's is a Japanese game (developed by From Software), and Obsidian are a USA company... Not sure what crappy source you get your information from

And yes, when Obsidian was Black Isle they made some of the best PC games at the time, Baldur's Gate, Fallout 1, Fallout 2, Neverwinter Nights etc

They made Fallout 1&2, which is why New Vegas was 100 times better than Fallout 3

I hope it's Baldurs Gate Dark Alliance 3.

It pisses me off that 2 ended with an opening for 3, 1 years later. oh I hope.

@11 This. The people that now form Obsidian have made some of the best games, and I look forward to see what they are doing with this project.

@15: Couldn't be Fallout 4, Bethesda bought the rights.

Hope it is a good multiplatform RPG. But then again, I bought but never played the DLC for Dungeon Siege 3.....

KOTOR 2 wasn't a bad game overall (quite good really), but compared to BioWare's first iteration of the series.....

Please Obsidian, if this is a sequel, don't do the same thing here like in KOTOR 2 (thats the only game I can talk on that they have made since it's the only one I have played)

I always liked Obsidian games. It kinda reminds me of EA from back in the Sega Genesis days. They took risks and made/publish games that were different from the rest. I admit, they're not top hits and blockbusting games but their games were solid and there was always something about them that made me want to try it. I hope this is good and I can never get enough dungeon crawling RPGs :)

Well this should be rather interesting. Obsidian has made some good games in the past like Alpha Protocal and New Vegas. I really liked how they did the morality in those games where there is no black and white every choice is a grey area.

Also I do NOT count anything made by black isle as obsidian because they are not the same company. Yes some of the people who worked there now work at obsidian but that is just some. Not all and not even most.
