Epic Mickey 2: The Power of Two

Spector: "If we Focus On Next-Gen Graphics, We're Going to Be in Trouble"

Practically every man, woman and their dogs knows that the next-generation of gaming is just around the corner, with games like Watch Dogs, Star Wars 1313 (pictured), GTA V and Team Bondi's recently announced Whore of the Orient, all hinting at the kind of potential graphical fidelity we can look forward to. But Epic Mickey 2's Creative Director, Warren Spector is concerned that if we focus solely on visuals, developers could find themselves floundering.

“In terms of consoles specifically, I think it's exciting that there's a new generation coming that's at least reported to be way more powerful than even what we have now,” Spector mused.

“The thing I'm concerned about is that we're going to use all that power to make even prettier pictures or “let's create the real world even more precisely” and we're going to focus on how many polys we have or that cool shader effect, instead of more interesting and important things like... recreating a conversation... How about non-combat AI? How about more dynamic and interactive worlds? How about me spilling water in your lap and having you react appropriately: something that has never happened in a game,” he suggested.

“If all we do is focus on “look at the graphics!” then I really think we will be stunted. And on top of that, our games are going to start costing $100 million each and no-one's going to be able to make them any more!” Spector added as a warning. “If we focus on creativity and the creative things that new consoles will allow us to do, then I think we'll be in great shape. If we focus on graphics, I think we're going to be in a little bit of trouble.”

Be sure to look out for our full interview with Warren Spector soon, with a hands-on preview of his latest game Epic Mickey 2: The Power of Two.

I actually agree with this. Be more innovative by using what the respective console can do. However, not to sound contradictive, but graphics do play a role in a game. It does have to look the part a bit. Not everything is about graphics, but a little effort in that department doesn't hurt.

I agree, focusing on creativity is much MUCH more better than the graphics.

EA wouldn't like to hear this..

The more I hear from this guy the more I like him. He was right on with violence in video games and now with this comment. I like pretty games as much as the next guy, but if that's all you focus on your probably not going to be very successful.

At least he's talking sense this time.

Of course, it depends on the tools and engines, with the increased technology there's an even greater focus on making engines that are easy and fast to develop for. But still, the increased graphical requirements have been a secret concern for me for a while, for the same reasons that Spector is pointing out.

If the medium only requires and expects better and better graphics, and if the development costs would only increase due to it, but the income would remain the same..well, the industry hasn't been seeing nice numbers lately. Although a new generation will boost interest and income, it's still a dangerous circle that could potentially lead to a crash.

In that sense, I'd say cool down. Focus less on intensive graphics and go for style and substance instead. Like Dragon Quest VIII on PS3, you don't need the best looking game on a technological aspect if the gameplay and design is so damn good. I would love Uncharted 4 looking scarily realistic, but I don't want to see this industry crash.

After I snap and break his jaw to FORCE him to keep his mouth shit, that is. Spector, you are IRRELEVANT to the game industry. SHUT UP!

And that's precisely what they'll do. The only things that will get made are the super-popular games that are guaranteed to sell enough copies to justify the gigantic development budget. And almost nothing else.

I couldn't agree more my favourite game is still and will probably always be resident evil 2, the story and what you "do" in the game are perfect. This is far more important than the graphics. The graphics are just a fancy wrapping on the product. That said some games do require the best graphics possible, for example uncharted, which feels like you are playing the greatest action adventure film ever made, wouldn't work so well with worse graphics.

Couldn't have said it any better myself. I've got a 50g bluray disc game console, and I've only seen a few select (exclusive) games break the half-way plane, of that. You developers/publishers won't make use of the medium, but you'll make excuses (PS3 is hard to make games on!). And in the meantime, you're expecting my $60 + spammed DLC. Pshyeah. Just imagine the degree of spam that's coming next gen. Not too much innovation and realism, but plenty of eye-popping/flashy graphics, of course! *smGDh*

When you go to the citadel in ME series would you rather it be prettier or have about 5000 people all interacting with each other ya know, like a 'normal' city/shopping area?

I know what I would rather have.

I've never focused on graphics anyway. A good game is just a good game and since most developers have been focusing on graphic I think that story/lore, character development and general gameplay have suffered. FFXIII being a prime example of this. I just hope they start making more indepth games. Graphics these days are good enough. Much better and they'll be better then real life lol

@15, id rather have both, but apparently you would rather have 5000 blobs walking around. cause they didnt put the time into the graphics to make the 5000 blobs look like people

I'm not too worried. First of all, your regular games but with better graphics doesn't sound THAT bad and they won't develop games they cannot afford to develop. Second, there'll be still a lot of creativity and interesting ideas. As long as you don't expect every game that comes out to be an artistic masterpiece of innovation and art, you should be fine. This gen brought a lot of really sweet games and the indie scene (maybe not the best word for it) is strong and active.

While he's right with what he says, I'd like to point out that Epic Mickey didn't seem to exactly focus on graphics ... what was it good for? ;)

It sounds to me most of you do not need Next Gen Consoles, and i don't think most of you would go out and spend money on a Next Gen Console if there was no real big improvement. It also depend what type of game your making as graphics are just important, Uncharted is popular because of it's graphics and how well it's plays so there needs to be a balance. And seeing how some games make more than movies i don't see the problem in spending a lot of money on a game when the game brings in a lot more money.

Well from GTA V, Watch Dogs and Star Wars 1313, I'm pretty sure we can say that they're not just focusing on graphics.

"i don't think most of you would go out and spend money on a Next Gen Console if there was no real big improvement."

You're not considering the fact that however big or small the improvement is, if you want to get to play the new console games, you'll have to get a new console. There's no upwards compatibility on the PS3. ;)
