Spec Ops: The Line

Yager Working on New Game, Spec Ops Sequel Doubtful

Yager is working on a big new project, but the odds are that it won't be a follow-up to Spec Ops: The Line.

When quizzed on the prospect of a sequel and asked whether publisher 2K would be involved, the game's design lead Jorg Friedrich hinted that perhaps sales were not strong enough to secure 2K’s future involvement.

“To be honest, it doesn’t look great,” said Friedrich.

The developer was speaking at GDC Europe where he discussed the emotional impact of player decisions within video games, something that Spec Ops: The Line sought to engage in.

Friedrich argued that storylines hinging on moral choices can make a greater impact in interactive videogames than they do in passive media.

However, he felt that Spec Ops: the Line could have explored this area more successfully. In particular, he believes that Yager’s use of Achievements and Trophies were one of the biggest impediments to his goal.

Friedrich believes that because they were tied to each of the moral choices featured in the game, the emotional impact of each was watered down as a result.

"I really regret that we had Achievements on moral choices," he said.

I wasn't referring to his quote, I was referring to the part of the article you've now changed to be relevant to us ;)

I don't get this. Doesn't the developer decides themselves what kind of trophies they actually want in the game? What would prevent them from just creating achievements/trophies around other parts of the game (like difficulties, in game skill-based feats and such), instead of tying them to the moral system?

I have to agree with Friedrich.
A lot of gamers make their in-game choices based on the achievement/trophy lists. Which, most times, ends up being the opposite of the choice they would have made otherwise.
The part I dont understand is pretty much what #4 said, arent they the ones who create the lists to begin with? Or is Friedrich saying that it was a mistake on their part to have those achievements/trophies?

Ah, I thought you meant the strapline on the front page. Fiddled with the body text for clarity/relevance, yeah.

That sucks, I LOVED SO:TL... Story was AMAZING.. Sure I never touched the online, But I didn't buy it for that. Kind of bummed that they're calling it quits there, but at least I got to be in the group that DID try it out.

The Walking Dead has had some success in seperating the storyline from the trophies. Perhaps Yager could have gone that route instead - tie trophies to specific chronogical events (ie, reach a destination, meet important NPC, complete a level) instead of morality choices. I don't think the game was advertised well for what it was - it looked like a Call of Duty knock-off on posters, which it wasn't - and that threw off sales too. Shame. It's a very interesting game.

This game has one of the best stories i've ever played, I don't think it's had enough appreciation.

Definitely one of my favorite PS3 games to date.

I enjoyed it so much that I don't really want a sequel, however, I wouldn't say no to a PREQUEL, exploring the characters on missions they encountered together before the events of Spec Ops The Line.. as I think the characters were brilliant too.

whether there were trophies tied to the decisions or not, on my second play through, i would have made all the opposite choices from my first play through. dont really see the big deal there.
