PEGI Video Games Ratings Become Law Today
Written Monday, July 30, 2012 By Richard Walker
View author's profile

Today sees the PEGI age ratings system for video games becoming law in the UK, after a whole raft of legislation hoo-hah that sees an end to BBFC ratings for games in favour of a universal PEGI rating. It's now illegal to sell 12-rated video games and up to anyone below the designated age.

PEGI will now act as the UK's single rating body for video games, as outlined by Parliament’s Video Recordings (Labelling) Regulations 2012 legislation. The rating process itself will be handled by the Video Standards Council (VSC), and anyone found to be selling games to underage customers could be subject to a maximum 6 year prison sentence and a £5000 fine.

Should a game be sold without the necessary PEGI rating, the seller could face 2 years in jail and an unlimited fine.

“The UK has one of the most dynamic and innovative video games industries in the world, and the games they produce not only entertain millions, but can also educate and foster creativity,” said UK Culture Minister, Ed Vaizey. “Today’s simplification of the ratings system benefits both industry and consumers and will help ensure that the millions of games sold in the UK each year are being played by the audiences they were intended for.”

Oh man...we shall see how long this lasts. I remember when Walmart was required to not sell to under age kids. My 13 year old brother picked up twisted metal black and went to buy it and the cashier asked him how old he was and then said he wouldn't sell it to him. I walked up and said you can either let him buy it or watch me use his money and buy it and then hand him the game. The guy gave in.

This won't stop kids from playing violent video games. US also has age restriction but parents/older siblings just buy the games for the kids. This won't really change anything. Besides it's not like 10 year olds have 40 pounds at their disposal anyway. I think nothing will change and as much as I hate kids playing games they aren't supposed to, it seems overkill to punish retailer with prison sentence.

Responsible parentes now have a chance of deciding which games their children should play. That's a good thing in my book.

@5: Age restrictions aren't enforceable by law in the US, however. That's corporate policy influenced by public opinion. The US government has tried to step in a few times to punish retailers for selling M-rated games to minors, but such laws have been ruled unconstitutional every time.

God Damnit, I have 4 pre-orders for 18 games and I turn 18 a few months after they are released. I hate Parliament. I seriously wish somebody could bring V for vendetta to reality. Blow up Parliament with a train full of gunpowder. Parliament is what makes the UK such a shitty place to live. Not Happy. RANT OVER. >=(

Also, Think about it, This is a fucking stupid idea. Children like comic book characters. So, Does that mean children will no longer be able to play them types of games because The Amazing Spider-Man was rated 16 on PS3 & Xbox 360. It doesn't fucking make any sense because Spider-Man is a character adored by children all over. Seriously, If all of this is to prevent people from copying video games, Then they might aswell rate Ratchet & Clank 18 because it encourages people to shoot people and hit them with a fucking wrench. People who blame video games for their crimes should learn to fucking grow up and get a mind of their own as if it wasn't for pricks like these guys, then this law wouldn't have come to fruition.

If u think Parliament sucks, try Congress. They don't care about the people, they just care about their respective political parties.

TBH, all these are just to save face - When someone does something irresponsible and the media pins it on the gaming industry, they can cry that they have a strict scheme in place to prevent sensitive and easily influenced teens from viewing such material, thus passing the blame on to others.

@2 Do you realise that its people such as yourself that are destroying online gaming by allowing rude, retarded and whining kids onto the internets.

Frankly, there should be an age rating on mics, though clearly it would change nothing....

Would be sweet if someone could create software that detects your age and then cuts you off if you are deemed to young for the rating of the game:D

For those of you saying this won't change anything, what do you recommend? No rating system at all? They can be difficult to enforce, but they are needed.

And #10, be careful. That sort of comment can get you in trouble thanks to the Terrorism Act.

@5: The overkill ensures retailer are taking this serious. Here in Germany you will lose your job if you sell games to underage though it's technically just a minor offense and only a fine.

@7: Responsible parents care about that already ;)

@11: Ratchet & Clank is an abstract visualization of violence. The more humanized the enemy and the more realistic / explicit visualization, the more it may affect 'mental stability' of children.
A game like Dead Space is by no means meant to be played by 12 year olds, no matter how cool the older siblings and friends say it is and no matter how much they enjoy spaceships and aliens.
If I want to be mean, I would say your first comment with your "serious wish" shows that you are already affected by the effects of playing inappropriate games for your age :P

I am sorry for my comment @10, It's just I am so sick of people fucking things up for other people. Especially the government. I don't mean to cause trouble and I am extremely sorry if I have offended anyone. It's just I pre-ordered Assassins Creed 3 & Resident Evil 6 and they have been rated 18 by Pegi. Also, If you live in the UK, You have to agree the government screw things up for everyone. Yet again I am deeply sorry and I hope I can be forgiven.

This won't make a blind bit of difference I'm afraid unless they have a policeman watching every store in the country but even that won't stop parents going in by themselves to get little 10 year old Johnny a copy of Black Ops 2 even though he's nowhere near old enough.

@13 I seriously doubt a detection system, if possible, would go down well. For instance, I am nearly 16 years old, but I am mature enough for any of these games and when using a mic (unless trolling, but I rarely ever do that). Hell, I'm probably the most mature teen of my grade! So I don't necessarily think its ate dependent all the time. If a teen is showing they are mature enough for M rated games (which ironically enough the M stands for Mature) the they should be allowed to play and/or buy the games. But it's still easier and cheaper to buy online most of the times lolz

#19 i agrre with you. this won't change anything. here in the u.s. if you sell a m rated game to an underaged kid gamestop (at least) fines that preson and the store he works at and he gets fired. but it doesn't stop underaged kids from getting m rated games due to some one who is old enough gets it and that will never change. if you think rated m/18 videos games are bad, try watching m.d. giest anime when your 12 which i did and was never effected. hell i watch the first 3 alien movies before i was 12. the fact is there are some kids like maybe 12 who are more mature then adults (and theres one my list).

This Law should be passed in USA. This way parents can't buy there children who aren't 17 M rated games. It's not the Sales person fault it's the Parents. Parents should be thrown in jail too. They just don't care what there child is playing. GTA IV was full of 10-14 years old playing online. It's a sick world we live in where Parents don't care what kind Videogames there child is playing.

It won't change the kids playing it, if a parents lets their child play game rated for older than them, they will just get it for them when they goto get the shopping or get it online.

The problem never has been the games companies, now the stores that sell the games. Its the damned parents who buy their kids an 18 certificate game, then complain about the content!

Prime example when I worked at GAME - I was selling a copy of Dead Space to a mom who had her child with her. I recommended she not get the game for the kid, as he'd probably find it too difficult and too scary, and drew attention to the fact that it was an 18 certificate (he had to be about 10, 11 at most). She told me the game was for her, and he wouldn't be touching it.

I sold the copy to her, and the following day she stormed back into the store, slammed the game down on the counter and went on about how the game had scared her child to the point of giving him nightmares and how she'd been up half the night trying to calm him down, and demanded I give her a full refund, and another game free.

Parents... the biggest idiots around at times, i swear...

I totally agree but what did you do when she demanded that? Because if it were me I would have told her to stick the game where the sun don't shine.
