Pitchford "Astonished" That Rivals Haven't Stolen the Borderlands Formula

Gearbox Software boss Randy Pitchford is "astonished" that no one has copied Borderlands.

The loot-based RPG-esque shooter offered a fresh take on the FPS when it hit in 2009, but as the world warms up for this year’s sequel Pitchford is amazed that nobody has latched on to the formula.

"I'm actually astonished that we're about to launch a sequel and no one's stole it from us," said Pitchford. "The formula's right there. No one's stolen it yet. That's weird.”

Pitchford is even more surprised considering he believes that the video game industry is based on theft.

"We're in an industry where people do nothing but steal from each other. That's kind of interesting, isn't it? Not that I want anyone to steal it, or I'm challenging people to steal it."

Although Borderlands was seen as a risk, Pitchford still believes that innovation is preferable to attempting to copy the current market leader Call of Duty.

"To do that, you really have to put in a lot. You have to really go for it and spend a lot. You have to basically not only out-brute force the market leader, but you have to out-clever them. The game has to be better. The marketing and production effort -- everything has to be bigger and better, and then you might kind of match or come close.

"It's kinda like Jerry Garcia. He said something like, 'You don't merely want to be the best at what you do. You want to be the only ones that do what you do.' If you're the only ones that do something that people find as valuable? You don't have to worry about competition. Like, Borderlands has zero competition. It doesn't have to worry about that at all."

Check out our latest video interview with Randy Pitchford here. Borderlands 2 is out on September 18th in North America and September 21st in Europe.

While Borderlands was innovative & original, it definitely got its roots from other games.

That being said, Borderlands is my favorite PS3 title. And I can't wait for 2!

Borderlands isn't that much different to the other FPS games out there

Saying Borderlands its totally different is like saying Fallout 3 is nothing like Oblivion.

The closest thing to Borderlands on any platform is Diablo and maybe Fallout. I'm just glad they're not trying make BL2 a copycat of every other game out there :).

I was just playing dead island and thought it was quite similar to it, skill trees, loot (money, items in rarity in different colours) weapons with different damage properties...just zombies and boring npc's to make it different.

Glad I got it cheap on pc, because me and my ps3 hunger for borderlands 2, HURRY UP SEPTEMBER!

agreed on the dead island similarity.
besides BL is basically an loot rpg with guns, so its not THAT innovative, it is hella fun though, got BL2 pre-ordered.

I think he is referring to the loot-based story that hasn't been copied. Every game is the same formula, save X world from Y bad person. While Borderlands is a story of greed and trying to get rich by finding the vault. It isn't a save the planet type of story-line, which was refreshing.

Yeah, that's the first thing I thought of, nintendo64X, when I read the article title... lol. Dead Island is basically a palette swap of Borderlands. You even respawn the very same way... only thing is, it didn't quite work out for Dead Island. Was still fun, but mediocre overall.

And, I can't wait for Borderlands 2, as well. My most anticipated game of this year, now that Asura's Wrath has been released.

Also, @#2 obvious message is obvious. You can have a favorite game that's multiplatform... lol.

It's ironic because borderlands is similar to fallout.

Similar to Fallout and Dead Island? I've played both games and none of them is similar to Borderlands. The true difference is not in the fact that you shoot (or rarity color, which is canon for RPGs) and wield guns, the main difference is the pace. Borderlands is frenzy, very arcade style and frantic, unlike FO and DI. By this means it's more similar to Unreal Tournament.
In conclusion, BL uses old formulas from past games (there's no possible true innovation in FPS any more, imo) but the tweaks Gearsoft added made it a success.

I agree with the above points: Borderlands is unique in it's art style, gameplay and FPS + RPG aspects, but it absolutely borrows from other games with its character classes, modifiable weapons and fastpaced action. But it is the way it puts all of those together that make it a unique game.

I can't wait to play Borderlands 2.

Haha, get a load of these devs! They're in serious denial that they took lots of influence from Fallout 3.

@17

Actually I think Fallout 3 and Borderlands are way different, for one they have a different artistic style and tone as well as the way the basic gameplay is set out with Fallout being more towards survival and creating items to help yourself.

I think Randy Pitchford is more stating that nobody is directly going against borderlands, there's Fallout but it's not seen as a rival. Borderlands doesn't seem to have a game that comes along and claim to do the same. There's no alternative, the kind of person who would buy Fallout 3 might not have thought of buying Borderlands in the first place.

Basically when Randy says they have no rivals he means there's no game that might make their potential key audience take a second guess at buying Borderlands.
