Need for Speed: Most Wanted (PS3)

Criterion Not Finished with Burnout Series

What with Criterion's latest endeavours, you could be forgiven for thinking that the developer has abandoned Burnout for good. But that's not the case.

The last Burnout instalment hit in 2008, with Criterion transporting the speedy series into an open world and showering it with DLC support. It was fantastic, but since then EA has had the studio working on other projects.

Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit was released in 2010 and spin-off Burnout Crash! kept the brand busy last year. Both games were different enough to stand apart from the main line of Burnout titles. However with Need for Speed: Most Wanted, announced at this year's E3, Criterion moves perilously close to their previous work.

So does Most Wanted spell the end for Burnout? Not at all, says Criterion. Pressed on the subject at E3 this year, Senior Producer Matt Webster said, "No, of course, not. That's not going anywhere."

Indeed, the studio is now pushing their blistering brand of racing even further. While discussing Most Wanted's open-world, Webster said, "It's bigger than Paradise, but it's difficult that one. It's not necessarily about the square meterage or whatever... There's much more drivable surface in here than we've ever done before though."

So not only can we look forward to more Burnout games, Most Wanted is also sounding pretty damn exciting. Good news all around!

You can read our preview of Need for Speed: Most Wanted here. It's out on October 30th in North America and November 2nd in Europe.

I've always hoped Criterion would make a Burnout: Paradise sequel, but it looks like, NFS: Most Wanted will be, but with real cars. Hard to top that.

How long have we been waiting for another game like Burnout Paradise? I guess it doesn't really matter since people are still playing Paradise right now!

@6: Not as long as I've been waiting for another game like Burnout Revenge. I hated Paradise. The open world was boring and obnoxious (no retry button if you fail an event = fucking failure; yes I know you can retry right BEFORE the end, but it's hidden so far away in so many convoluted menus that realistically, you have to start going for it a good bit away from the finish if you want to use it. It's useless if it's a neck and neck race that you end up losing right at the very end), and they took out all of my favorite events that had existed in Revenge.

Then again, who am I kidding? Unless EA gets their shit together and starts acting right again, I'm not going to buy any Burnout games regardless of what previous game they model it after.

@7 actually there is a restart button after you lose an event. I forgot where it is but I believe quickdrive menu or whatever it's called.

Great to know Burnout is not dead. Any full retail burnout is a day one buy for me. Has been since I picked up Burnout 2 on PS2 all those years ago.

Good to hear. Paradise was my first Burnout game, as I'm not too into real world racing games, but I loved it... put 300+ hours into it, nabbed the Platinum trophy along with all DLC, PLUS got 303% on my license. Its a ton of fun, Easy Drive was genius and the way single player, co-op and competitive mixed seamlessly in a huge city (see: playground) was brilliantly done.

I love Criterion and as soon as I see the words burn, out and Criterion on the cover of a game, consider it bought.

Good, Paradise had maybe the best online of any game I've played. There is just so much to do.
