Dead Island Sequel is Not in Production, Says Deep Silver

With Techland registering a trademark for 'Dead World' last year, talk of a Dead Island sequel has been swirling ever since with recent rumours even attaching Spec Ops: The Line developer Yager to the project. However, publisher Deep Silver has today stepped in and asserted that Dead Island 2 (or whatever you want to call it) is not currently in production.

"We are neither working with Yager on Dead Island 2 nor do we have any contractual agreement with Yager about any project at this point," Deep Silver's Development Director, Guido Eickmeyer told IGN. "We have neither something in place or in discussion between the parties that would explain such news, nor do we have Dead Island 2 in concept or production with external partners."

A Dead Island follow-up hasn't been ruled out though, Eickmeyer revealed. "There is a legitimate chance that we will – at some point – work [with Yager] on a title - and I would not even exclude the possibility that this could be something within the Dead Island franchise."

Where does that leave original Dead Island dev Techland then? Could the Polish developer be left out of the frame for a potential Dead Island follow-up? "We didn't confirm or deny anything. We can't stop anyone from jumping to conclusions, but we won't comment on rumours," Techland's International Brand Manager, Blazej Krakowiak explained to Eurogamer. "Let's set the record straight. The only thing that happened was that Techland registered Dead World as a trade mark. Let me point out that it's hardly the only trade mark we own."

But surely a Dead Island sequel is a no-brainer, given the success of the zombie-thwacking first-person RPG? "While Dead Island is Techland's most successful title, it's not a game changer for us," Krakowiak continued. "It's simply another proof that our philosophy of combining proven ideas with innovation and a fresh approach pays off."

It seems we'll have to sit tight for now then. There's no Dead Island sequel on the cards for the time being, it seems.

Had a jolly good time with Dead Island, but this is sad to read, I had hoped there would be a Dead World or something similar soon.

Dead Island was a blast, simply because I could play the entire game co-op online with my friend. We had so much fun with it.

Dead Island had everything it takes to be a success (bugs included lol)...so I really hope for a more deep and polished sequel.

@1 Well, whoever bought the game based off of a trailer that showed absolutely no gameplay is a moron. It caught my attention as it did to many others, but I actually looked into the game a little more before deciding to play it. I don't think they did anything wrong really.

Dead Island did a lot of things right and a lot of things wrong, a sequel would be welcome if it was a little more polished.

I really hope there isn't a DI 2 as the first game is terrible!
