Epic Games Reveals Next-Gen Unreal Engine 4 Demo Screens

With rumours flying left right and centre surrounding the inevitable next-generation of console hardware, Wired has published a feature examining the future of video game visuals, which boasts a gallery of screenshots taken from Epic Games' Unreal Engine 4. And with Epic lending its Unreal Engine 3 to almost every action game around, including the likes of Batman: Arkham City, Asura's Wrath and numerous others, it's highly likely that we'll be seeing a lot of UE4 in our next-gen games too.

And based on the strength of these Unreal Engine 4 screens taken from a privately shown demo reel, we're in for some pretty cutting edge, jaw-dropping graphics. But they'll have a lot to live up to, according to Epic's Cliff Bleszinski. "There is a huge responsibility on the shoulders of our engine team and our studio to drag this industry into the next generation," Bleszinski told Wired. "It is up to Epic, and [tech boss] Tim Sweeney in particular, to motivate Sony and Microsoft not to phone in what these next consoles are going to be. It needs to be a quantum leap. They need to damn near render Avatar in real time, because I want it and gamers want it - even if they don't know they want it."

What makes the Unreal Engine 4 so special then? There's incredibly fancy particle effects for one, that allow for the rendering of numerous particles without affecting a game's performance. "Mark my words, those particles are going to be whored by developers," enthused Bleszinski.

Unreal Engine 4 will also ship with something called the Kismet 2 tool, which enables developers to script levels using simple visual terms, making designing games a more straightforward process, allowing designers to experiment more with various scenarios without programmers having to tinker with the underlying code. This means the level designer is king when utilising UE4.

"There were people who weren't programmers but who still wanted to create and script things," explained Senior Engine Programmer, James Golding. "When we got them a visual system, they just went completely bananas with it. We're turning our level designers into godlike creatures who can walk into a world and create with a swipe of their hand."

Check out a selection of the images taken from the Unreal Engine 4 demo reel below, including the wireframe workings going on underneath the stunning dark knight loveliness. Check out the particles, lighting effects and textural detail. And look at that snowy mountain range. It looks real!

Looks like the Unreal 3 tech demo (Gears of War 1) did all those years ago. A video demo is needed, not these stills.

If the next gen consoles can run visuals like this at 60fps... oh just think of how wonderful that'd be.

I don't see much of a difference between this and the current PS3's graphics. Look at games like God of War 3, Uncharted 3, or The Last of Us. They have graphics comparable, if not better than that.

Don't get me wrong, it looks great, but that isn't enough to get me to buy the PS4 at launch. Once the graphics start to improve heavily, then I'll start looking at buying. Until then, I'm content with the PS3.

But I honestly can't wait to see the later games of the PS4. Comparing the early PS3 games to the best PS3 games out now, there's a HUGE leap. I can only imagine how much better it gets from here. 8D

@10

You're comparing 1st party games to 3rd party games. Apples and Oranges bro.

If they can get a 3rd party engine to look as good as a first party engine, then ALL games will look as good as, if not better than the highest benchmark we have now. Anything that comes out of Naughty Dog or Santa Monica will only look better than those screens up there.

these are pc images from a nvidia 680 graphics card which cost £500,so there is no way nextgen consoles will look like that this topic is misleading.
if you want next gen buy a pc

I hate the beginning and run up to a next-gen console because there's so much bullshit to sift through. Lots of games claiming they can do this and that but in the end never deliver on those claims, I mean, just look at the very first Killzone 2 footage that was used to show off the PS3. Granted, the final game looked amazing but it wasn't anything like that tech demo they showed off.

Anyway, for me to buy the next-gen consoles, they need to not have that anti-pre-owned bollocks and have more than purdy graphics. I might as well buy a PC!

My opinion is that Next Gen will be a Gen of optimization. Better interactivity, stability, and accessibility. 60FPS will be the standard, and 1080p as well, and freezes and crashes of games should be unheard of. Graphics won't be taking a "quantum leap." Just the performance of those graphics. Games won't be able to rely on graphic awe next generation like they could this gen, it just isn't practical. Better stories and universes need to be created instead. Even the best of gaming engines can't do that for the developer.

Its great Unreal 4 is so apparently accessible. It hopefully means that developers will be able to truly create their visions, and we really do get those greater universes and experiences.

Dont see much difference between those images and current graphics, How about actually having games with really amazing stories so many rpg with such poor stories.

if u hadnt told me, id think those were screens of dark souls or something. im sure in motion they look fantastic, but its just CG, not an actual game. CG looks that good now. id like to see images rendered in real time looking like that.

@11 Okay, Gears of War 3. That's a first party game from Epic. Can't hold a candle to Uncharted 3 or God of War 3.

And you only have to wait 2 minutes instead of 3 for the textures to load in now! I like the way unreal looks but that is a problem

Don't see the difference between this stuff and Skyrim on the best setting for PC. Have to show more before I start to care.

@23: no clue why you're talking to yourself, but Quake was developed by id Software, now published by Bethesda and they have their own engine, id Tech 5, used lately in Rage.

And how can everybody say that current graphics matches this? Look at the LOD of the mountains afar in the panoramic shot, all the particles - which granted has to be seen in motion -, look at the sharpness of the texture of the broken window and the throne(?)-thingy at the hallway, and all those immense light effects.
You can do that in a CG today, but not within a game. This runs probably on a high-end PC system with 2-3 graphic cards. (But of course is still bare of game elements like advanced physics, AI and situational animations.)

The 3.5 Samaritan was said to run smoothly on one of todays graphic card, so this would be a better prospective of next-gens graphics.

^Indeed. Graphics on PS3 are fine, but a bit more horsepower can never hurt.

From what I read part of this demo is 'playable' so can't wait to see what 2nd & 3rd gen next gen games will actually be like, roll on E3 for the full public screening.

Samaritan apparently runs on UE3 (albeit on next gen processors)so is more likely what we'll actually be getting in 2013/14, either way I personally can't wait.

I genuinely wonder if the PS3 will be able to run a game like this... and I mean the whole game, not just cutscenes.

@26 how am I talking to myself it says @20 I'm not comment 20 so of your going to be clever get it right. Activision did publish quake 3 and if they don't now I don't know but tbh quake wars sucked anyway quake 3 was the best 1.
