Well that's great and all, but they way they're talking about it doesn't seem like they get what the actual problem is. The point is, if you've already created the content to the point that it's on the disk on release, then it's not "DLC". Therefore you shouldn't charge people for it. I understand why the content's on the disk so they shouldn't change the way they do that, it's just the fact that they're asking people to pay for it when they decide to release it to the public... then again why the hell isn't it just available at the start? Or at the very least unlockable through doing stuff in game? Then they can sell those DLC packs that unlocks all the content for people too lazy to play the game for it. Then they're still making some money on it. This sounds like they're going to still develop "DLC" during the full games development, then not put it on the disk so they can still charge for it. This then causes the problem with file size and online people not being able to see costumes they don't have etc that they were trying to fix in the first place by doing on disk "DLC". Point of DLC is to add content you couldn't during development to extend the game's life and keep things fresh. Not to make a quick buck buy holding off in-game content and calling it "premium content". They don't seem to understand that. |

@8 excpet its not like that because they are additional things, not things you unlock playing the game. From now on they will just not put any DLC on the disc. Thats what i don't get the complaining. Its not like they are going to give you DLC now, they just won't put it on the disc, and you will have a longer Download. I do not necessarily support on-disc DLC, but i just dont get the big deal, either way you are paying for it. |

@15 But it is a big deal. That content Capcom charge you for was already made for the game with the intention of it being in the game, it's not a case of they took content out of the game, removed it from the disc and sold it to us. It's like they locked it away from us so we have it but we can't access it. Also their not going to give us DLC now? What does DLC stand for? I only ask because last time I checked the D stood for DOWNLOADABLE as in YOU DOWNLOAD the content. We have longer downloads for everything else and that was never a problem there, the problem here is that Capcom actually needs time to think about a practice that is criminal at best. Yes either way we are paying for it but the problem is that when it comes to On-Disc DLC we shouldn't be paying for it because the phrase "ON DISC DOWNLOADABLE CONTENT" is an oxymoron. If it's ON-DISC your not downloading it your downloading the key to allow you to use it. Quick analogy. You buy a house then the estate agent suddenly tells you about a room they "failed" to mention about but they'll sell you the key to the room for an extra $500/£500. This right here is what Capcom is doing to you every time they sell you On-Disc Content. |

@19 When did they ever do that? UMvC3 came out 10 months later, which is a bit stupid but that's it, 1 more version, not 4 or 5. SSF4 came out over a year after SF4 (CoD isn't all that different each iteration and come out yearly). AE is a downloadable update for SSF4 so no need to buy a new disk and AE2012 was a free update. I'm not supporting how they do things but I really think people take the whole thing WAY out of proportion. FG's evolve, and today's technology can be used to fix any broken stuff and rebalance the games to keep them fresh and competitive. I really don't see the problem with keeping it updated and if they need to do a new disk to do a complete revamp every now and then, then so be it. |

I don't think it really matters where the content is located, the disc or the psn store servers. The issue I have with it is the actual content DLC is nowadays. They rarely really add anything to the complete game, they usually just take stuff out, call it "separate development" to justify the exclusion, then sell that crap to us. It gets even more apparent when you look at last-gen. Pretty much every sort of unlockables you had in those games is not or rarely to be found in current-gen games but has been turned into DLC you must pay extra for. Why is that called "developed separately" all of a sudden when it was part of the games and their development last-gen? The unlockables games come with now are the mere trophies and as much as I like my trophies, they're no substitute for actual unlockable content. Now we cannot really complain because we know what content we pay for when we buy the game, but it still feels like tricking us. The only way they'll learn what we want is when we don't buy games we think lack content they should have from the beginning. |

@23 DLC is actually a feature that's been with the gaming industry for a long time, I think it's more of the fact that games companies know we'll pay for the content that's changed. Also I completely agree with the whole trophies thing. It still makes me laugh every time somebody says they like a piece of DLC or a game but then demand to see the new trophies/achievements as if they actually add something to the game. I mean you have this great game/DLC but your question is where are the little pictures? |

Forum Posts: 864 | Comment #28 by c1ned1ne Tuesday, May 15, 2012 @ 07:46:13 AM | |
Way to go ... around the real problem. If it's done before the release, include it. If it's on disc it means it was even done before the disc production started, so there is no reason to charge extra. If you decide "at the beginning of the development cycle" to make DLC which you include on disc it just means you slap customers in the face with cut-out content. Same goes with the plague of pre-order DLC - obviously you it's already done. Most people don't pre-order cause of the DLC but get pissed because somewhere some retailer gets a another set, which they like more or deals are region specific and not available to them. You always feel like ripped off the whole game. Acceptable DLCs are Day 1, if done post-development and especially if a free code is included with a new copy or post-release. If they release that stuff 1 week later, no one would care when it was actually developed. The one-week loss on revenue should be less than the loss of image. |

| No DLC Is post developement. ALL DLC is pre planned now a days. Correct me if I'm wrong but the reason why they put it on the disc is because it's cheaper to Capcom. If they put it out for DOWNLOAD through Playstation Store then they have to pay a fee (9%) for every sale. Every business in the whole world is created to MAKE MONEY. Capcom sees it as cutting cost by putting on the disc. Just the way it is.. It's all about the money. All you complaining owned a business you would do the same thing. And if you don't like it quit bitching and don't buy it! They don't force you too. If come back with I paid $60 and I want the full game. Let me tell you NO GAME Sold now a days comes 100% complete. |

All I got from that article was...."we'll be a bit more careful by not putting the DLC on disc! We'll still have DLC available, but we'll keep it under wraps until the time comes!" Well doesn't this fancy our tushes?! The only reason why they are even mentioning this is because Dragon's Dogma is releasing next week and they don't want the same backlash they got with SFxT (which was well deserved). I do see where businesses like EA, Capcom, or Activision are coming from with DLC. My problem doesn't sit with the DLC itself really. @30 So you mean to tell me that NO GAME is sold 100% full with NO DLC? Games like Madden, Tekken, Rayman Origins, etc. Just saying there are games out there that are great games that didn't have DLC! |

@jday you're completely missing the point and 'don't like it don't buy it' doesn't help the situtation we're already in. If a game wants to have DLC, add it separately afterwards. Costumes or characters or whatever else should all be in the game when it's shipped (and the fact that they're on disc proves they already are) DLC should strictly be reserves for extending the life cycle of the game before the next game comes out. I've mentioned it before on other DLC related articles, but just look at Grand Theft Auto, or RDR (funnily enough they're from the same developer) they released a whole new story, with new everything. Literally including new features for every single part of the game, and they charged i think £7 for each. These were clearly being worked on after the original was finished (even though i would assume it had been planned) and required considerable amounts of effort and work from the team that created the game. Removing costumes or characters that have already been made, and then charging extra for them afterwards is disgusting, and it's crap like that that is messing up the industry. The people who are getting annoyed are the people that miss what the entire gaming industry used to be about. Now it seems to be only a minority of devs/publishers who are actually creating games for their original purpose. |

Ultimately its about the money. They don't care about you or anyone, they do what's best to make income. Apparently they feel this is the way to go and they found out that more than likely its not with the over whelming response fromt he consumer. So now they have to figure out a new way to get your money. Which will be through the store. All DLC Is pre planned that's a given. Some companies(Rockstar) don't put it on the disc and some release it strategically and make it look like it was post production work. More than likely it was either finished already and delayed or it just needed some finishing touches to be completed after launch. Skyrim is the only game that I know that actually said they are waiting to hear what the consumers want before creating and releasing DLC |

What a bunch of freaking pricks, now instead of it being finished an on the disk, it's going to be finished and OFF the disk, that's the only difference they'll make... At least that's what it seems they're saying. To hell with those money grubbing bastards, seriously. They're either freaking clueless to what we mean with our complaints or they're playing ignorant with us, and either of them is NOT ok. What we want is for Capcom to put the DLC on the disk, but without being locked! I mean seriously, what the heck Capcom?? You finish it, then you say that it's the same as putting it to be downloaded later? We don't give a damn if we're getting it sooner or later, I give a damn about the fact that I'm being made to pay what is already done before the game is released, I'm pissed off at the fact that they're withholding content that could easily be put in the game, just for personal gain. What they need to understand is that we're not cashcows that are here to be milked for every cent we've got by some company which already has too much money. So capcom stop being greedy with what you put in the game, and actually start giving us NEW content! Not content which the game is already supposed to have. Put all the content in the game and make MORE! Not put some content in the game and then give the rest as DLC. They're either really stupid or THEY think we're really stupid. |

| Every company does the same thing they just deliver the DLC using different methods/techniques. Everyone should be complaining about the gaming industry as a whole not just Capcom. At least Capcom has made a statement regarding it. Least give them credit for that. EA, Rockstar etc.. hasn't said anything but they still attempt to cash in on DLC. When it's all said and done there is not much difference. They are all going to have DLC pre-planned / finished before their respective games launch. |

@35,39: There is a huge difference between pre-planned and post-production. When you hit Gold a lot of the staff doesn't have anything to do with the game anymore, so they can work on DLC without affecting the development of the main game. There is also a lot of time between giving the Master to disc production and release. Time you can easily work on another project like patches which wouldn't be finished in time, DLC or - in the good ol' times - actual addons. None of this does affect the released "on-disc game". But if you include DLC on disc, it is clearly a sign that it has been finished way before release and could have been easily included in the game already. Al you do is download a freaking key, you don't even need to patch up the game to make the new content work. |

| well, i guess this is at least a step in the right direction. even if we're paying too much to get a game that only uses half the disc it's on, at least we're not being asked to pay for anything twice. the next step will be to get them to put enough shit in their games to fill out that disc and give gamers their $60 worth, and to keep a general rule that anything created for the game before either release or having filled up the disc should be considered initial content, instead of DLC. Trophies, as fun as they are, should not be a developer's only free avenue when it comes to replayability. |

| @7: It's called a patch you idiot. They can give you one to give you the character data for free, so you can play against others who bought them, but you can't use them yourself until you buy the content. The only reason fighting games ever were segmented is because developers are retarded. Games like LittleBigPlanet have been doing this to let you keep playing User Created Content for years now. So if you want to blame someone for fighting games being fragmented, blame the right people: the developers and publishers. Not costumers who don't like taking it up the ass without lube from Capcom. |

| Well that changes nothing! What does it matter who it's released. The principle of good ethical business practice stands in the fact that DLC, by default is content that devs start working on, after the game's release. And as long as they have FINISHED or are close to finishing this content BEFORE the game release, then it really does not matter if it's not in the disc. The selling of said content as something extra is still very wrong! |

you guys should see the topics about this on GameFAQs there are some people that are in love with Disc Locked Content. I do not mind Down Load content but when it is on the disc already i paid for that when i bought the disc already. But also when they simply remove the content and sell it to you later is also wrong. If the content is finished before the game goes Gold it should be on the disc to begin with. it is a no-win situation on both sides in the long run. |

Call me crazy, just don't go overboard doing so, but I just don't understand why you get so mad over it? Whether it's on the disc or not, you're -still- going to buy and download the damn stuff anyway, despite, say, Street Fight X Tekken's additional 12 characters for £20... Twenty-effing-pounds? Whether on the disc or not is not the issue for me, it's the damned price for the additional characters. So, yeah... I just don't understand. What's the issue, really? |

| DLC is extra content not needed to finish the game but extra stuff to play with or use. A few people have mentioned Dragon's Dogma as an example with its disc-locked content. You don't need the extras to finish the game. It's a complete game as it stands without DLC. I bought the game and enjoy it. I even bought 2 DLC's (hair and weapons) to add to my enjoyment. Am I pissed about it being on disc and locked? No. Why should I be? If it wasn't on disc, then I'd still have to download it regardless. And people trying to compare game DLC to an incomplete car is garbage. Worst comparison ever. You need tires to make a car viable, and thus, they are included in the purchase. You don't need DLC to make a game viable, and thus, it's not included. I love the fact that some people feel entitled to stuff... |

| I guess I don't understand the distinction. As stated several times above, it's not included as part of the original gameplay and therefore they charge extra. Whether each individual prefers downloading and using HDD space or having it locked to disk and just receiving an unlock key I cannot say. Either way, one thing will not change and that is that if you want extras, you will pay for them because charging for additional gameplay will not go away. |

| Instead of leaving content locked on the disc, they're just going to cut it out and save it until a few months later in order to make it look like they didn't just cut it from the game. |

"Call me crazy, just don't go overboard doing so, but I just don't understand why you get so mad over it? Whether it's on the disc or not, you're -still- going to buy and download the damn stuff anyway, despite, say, Street Fight X Tekken's additional 12 characters for £20... Twenty-effing-pounds? Whether on the disc or not is not the issue for me, it's the damned price for the additional characters. So, yeah... I just don't understand. What's the issue, really?" Are all you guys that claim to have no clue serious? The issue is obviously that people feel ripped off because the download content is created at the exact same time, with the exact same budget, as the actual game. Hence it's able to be on the disc in the first place. No matter how you might feel, download content like that clearly makes the game you do get worse, since the download content is offered to you as a separate purchase yet was created with time and money that was supposed to be spent on the actual game. That is why people are annoyed, and I don't blame them at all. That's why you can check my profile and see that I never buy download content. Some of you are saying download content isn't necessary for each game? So, what is necessary? When they re-release Final Fantasy X, there's a ton of content they could take out from the game and it would still be playable. I guess you wouldn't mind if they did take out all that content and sold it back to you. I'm surprised so many consumers seem to be anti-consumer. |

| Isn't there a diference between never having something and owning something then having in taken away. The DLC that comes locked on the disc is something you truly never owned, plus you'd still be paying the same amount of money as if you'd have downloaded it from the PSN store. |

| On-disc DLC is just another way to stole someones money. Its offensive in everyway. |
