Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3

Call of Duty Elite Racks Up 2 Million Paying Subs

So, erm, Call of Duty Elite is quite popular. According to the latest stats, the service now boasts 10 million users, 2 million of whom are premium members.

Released as part of Activision’s quarterly financial report, the stats offer up a few more enormo-numbers worth noting. Apparently, as of 31st March the CoD franchise had amassed 40m monthly active users, with Modern Warfare 3 players alone racking up 1.6 billion hours of online gameplay.

Despite the insanity of those numbers, however, it still wasn’t enough to save Activision from a year-on-year drop in revenue. The publisher may have added a $1.17 billion diamond encrusted Killer Whale to its money swimming pool in the last three months, but that figure is down from last year’s $1.45 billion. The poor things.

Putting a brave face on the fact that he may have to cut down on the gold-plated Ferrero Rochers, Activision CEO Bobby Kotick stressed that the company’s performance was "better than expected" and that it has strong prospects going forward.

"On May 15 Blizzard Entertainment will release the highly anticipated Diablo 3 and we are proud to report that pre-orders for the game worldwide have set a new record for Blizzard," he said.

"For the remainder of 2012 and beyond, our product pipeline includes some of the most innovative games we have ever developed for our established franchises, including Blizzard Entertainment's World of Warcraft: Mists of Pandaria, StarCraft 2: Heart of the Swarm and all new MMORPG game, as well as Activision Publishing's Skylander's Giants, Call of Duty: Black Ops 2 and a new universe from Bungie.”

He said some other stuff too, but it was really fucking boring.

Brilliant!

I can't believe that Elite is this popular!
It makes me fear for the future of franchises like Battlefield once EA see these numbers

"According to the latest stats, the service now boasts 10 million users, 2 million of whom are premium members." really says something when only 20% of the people pay for it

I know.
I was kinda hoping that they would decide against it.
But £35 a year for elite, 2 million paying subscribers = £70,000,000 that iss essentially pure profit.

I don't think EA can say no to that kind of money for such little effort.
Especially considering that Battlelog is already up and running. There is less work for them than there was for Acti for elite!

I shudder to think.

@7 Now you've put it like that. I could do with £70m for doing not that much, most of the DLC is bloody disc based because of the Blu-Ray disc, I can say that without remorse.

I'm all for people doing what they like and enjoying what they like, but looking at the industry, it makes me sad that there are more DLC subscribers for Call of Duty than there are actual players for the vast majority of games on the market. It frustrates me that smaller companies make amazing games and yet the market is dominated by advertising power and rehashes.

@11
It's obviously needed to make up for all that money that they lose because of pre-owned sales.

That's just a disgusting number to look at though ain't it?

I would love to write a stat tracking script that paid me that much.

I love hearing all the people that think paid elite members are stupid. People do what they want with their own money.

This entire article makes me sick. Everything. I might play another Call of Duty game, if they paid me a subscription. I hate that shooters are so wildly popular, they are pretty much the most shallow and bland games out there. All kids today wanna do is pew pew pew oh boom headshot. Look, I'm squatting on your corpse after I killed you using my lag switch to make you lock up while I shot you.

10 million retards are killing the gaming industry. Developers will realize that they don't need to spend too much in designing games or in creative ideas. Just copy the same graphics, add a couple of extra features. BAM! Profit.

Very soon there will be no Batmans, Portals, Catherines, Uncharteds...

@16 I can deal with no portals and batman's but these games are killing the japanese game industry because if a company can just rerelease the same shit over and over again how are the games gonna evolve and that is the problem right their because after seeing this why would MGS5 be different from MGS4 if activision can make cod 9 be the same as cod 8 and make trucklads of money

People that play nothing but COD 24/7 have nothing better to do than shoot the shit out of people reaching the highest rank possible, which means absolutely NOTHING, and piss them off for fun by cheating. It makes me sick the COD franchise has had little to no change over the years and people are wasting money year after year on the same crap. I also agree with those that say shooters are getting too popular and that there's little differences between every shooter game generally speaking. Plus, multiplayer is in almost EVERY game nowadays even in ones that do not need it. What happened to all the excitement and entering fun of single player games?
