Beyond Good & Evil 2 Still Running for Next-Gen, Confirms Ancel

Beyond Good & Evil creator Michel Ancel has reaffirmed that a sequel to the game is still in production, but it won't be released for this generation of consoles.

Speaking in an interview with the Toulouse Game Show, Ancel said, "We are in an active creation stage and at this moment we are only focusing on the game and making it the best game that we can."

Though he wouldn't specify which platform that the game would release on, Ancel did say that it will require the power of next-generation hardware. "That decision would just distract us from that objective. I can say that it's a very ambitious game and we need some tech to achieve that ambition," he said.

"We focus on the game. We create it first, then we'll see what can run it. We don't say 2013 because we don't know when it will come. We're working to create a great game and it needs more tech."

Since its announcement back in 2008, official BG&E2 news has been a little thin on the ground, beyond some leaks, rare public appearances and publisher assurances. What we have seen, however, has been pretty special.

When quizzed on that old, leaked footage, Ancel discussed the gameplay a little, saying that BG&E2 will feature parkour gameplay that has more in common with Prince of Persia and Assassin's Creed than Mirror's Edge.

"We had this concept even before Mirror's Edge launched," said Ancel. "And we have a different approach to the first person perspective that Mirror's Edge has. Prince of Persia and Assassin's Creed are closer to what we have in mind with the control of the character in a third person perspective."

I've chucked the vids below, just 'cos they're great.

  • I'm just frickin' PSYCHED that they are making a BG&E2! Thank you!
  • Well that's disappointing. Mainly because I probably won't be buying a next-gen console if so many of the rumours are true. Hopefully I'll have a decent PC by the time BG&E 2 comes out.
  • Wow from that 1st vid it looks like it will b super fun and worth the wait, just take yer time and if ye need new tech ti get the most out of yer game then wait fot that new tech :) plently of games ti play till then anyway
  • I'm glad to hear that the game has not been abandoned, and that rayman sales were so good that we'll be getting a sequel.
  • Im big fan of BG&E and its my no.2 on my top 10 (no.1 is FF7, Planscape Torment is no.3 with Fallout 2). And im waiting for this game like... i dont know, but i dont wait for other games like that. Its sad that this is not on orignal engine - for me its still pretty ;)
  • Didn't they say exactly the same thing last gen?
  • vaporware
  • I really want this game already, but I'm starting to get a Duke Nuke'em Forever feeling with how long it took that game to come out and the results.
  • It will be a preorder and main reason for the new console in my case.
  • I'm waiting for him to say, "If you buy Rayman Legends, it'll help support its development!" ...just like he said about BG&E HD and Rayman Origins. -.-
  • Ahhh... seriously for the next generation?, i was waiting the sequel now for PS3 and X360, since i don't want to buy the next generation of consoles (well except maybe the WiiU)
  • not interested anymore. Judging by the sales of the PSN version, I'm not the only one
