PSN Exclusive The Unfinished Swan Gets Debut Trailer

The Unfinished Swan, from indie developer Giant Sparrow, has been officially announced. It looks completely wonderful.

A PlayStation Network exclusive, The Unfinished Swan sees you navigating a pure white environment while flinging black balls of pain onto surfaces to guide you. It’s hard to describe and do it justice, so check out the trailer below to see it in action.

You play a boy called Monroe who is chasing a swan that escaped from a painting into a "surreal, unfinished world".

It looks like Sony are grooming developers Giant Sparrow as the replacement for thatgamecompany. The creators of Flower had a three game deal with the platform holder that expired with the release of Journey. Giant Sparrow creative director Ian Dallas says, "Sony calls it an ‘incubation deal.’

"In addition to giving us funding they also provide office space, equipment and advice." Part of the deal also sees a graphics programmer from Sony Santa Monica's God of War team bolstering the developer. "The best part is that we get to focus all of our energies on just making a game," says Dallas.

"Our goal is to give players strange and beautiful experiences they've never had before. We want to give people genuine surprises and then keep on surprising them the whole game.”

Intriguingly, Dallas says that what happens in the trailer is just the beginning. "The painting a white world stuff is actually just the first 15 minutes. After that, things get really weird,” he says.

The Unfinished Swan will be Move-compatible, not exclusive. No release date yet.

I will definitely chip in with my cash. I love that there seems to be a market for these kinds of games. I really believe that Journey (and its soundtrack) showed that a title like that can create mainstream (!) buzz and mainstream (!) interest. Journey isn't only for gamers that are bored with other games -- it's for everyone. I have a feeling The Unfinished Swan will scratch the same kind of itch.

Would be cool if it actually came in a picture-book like you see at the end. But it's a download title. Seems so long ago when that prototype video was shown back then ... but still, there's no clue about what the gameplay will actually be other than "make the gameworld visible with colour".

I really don't see the point in releasing a trailer for a game that doesn't show the game. Its like when triple A came releases a trailer and its all just one big CG. Its really annoying because it gives you no sense of what the game is actually like. This one is no different.

@8

Again with my comment on #7. How do you know it looks fun?!?!? They didn't show anything but a CG movie! No gameplay! I'm am so confused by this mindset.

@how do you know thats not gameplay? looks to me like you throw paint with the move controller and follow a path through a colorless world, very creative looking. very interesting.

Wow, I'm surprised that they were able to actually get this one out there. I played a prototype for this game when I was in college during our basic programming and game prototyping class. And if this isn't the same team then they sure as hell made the same game. I thought it was great back then, and I'll be sure to check it out when the full release is out.

@12: YEs, Now it does!
When I first read it had an X360 link next to it.
That combined with the video showing the watermark of "X360A / PS3T"
confused me.

Obviously I didn't think that sounded right.

I can't wait for this game, one of the reasons I love Sony because of games like this and giving a had to game companies that make something unique and amazing.
