The Walking Dead

The Walking Dead Banned In Australia
Written Thursday, April 26, 2012 By Richard Walker
View author's profile

Telltale Games' The Walking Dead game is out now on the PlayStation Store with episode one 'A New Day' kicking off the five episode season starring protagonist Lee Everett, embarking upon his own struggle to escape an Atlanta overrun with the slavering undead.

Running parallel with Sheriff Rick Grimes' own story in the comic books and TV series, The Walking Dead game sees Everett fighting off zombies, which naturally means buckets of blood. Hence, The Walking Dead won't be released in Australia due to the game's violence, blood and mature content.

"Sorry, but due to the OFLC ratings laws in Australia and New Zealand, and the fact that this is a mature game, we do not currently have plans to release the game there on consoles," Telltale Games confirmed on its forums.

The Walking Dead: Episode 1 'A New Day' is available to download now for $4.99/£3.99/€4.99 with a five episode season pass also available for $19.99/£15.99/€19.99 with a Walking Dead premium theme.

[Thanks, Nathan & Bryce]

Is that technically banning, though? It's more like they're saying, "Not worth it."

Or would that be how the laws work... ?

I'm not surprised. Australia have a really strict rating system when it comes to games.

The best way to protect children from adult games is not to ban them (and thus feed the blackmarket import business) but to provide appropriate classification. The rest of the developed world does it; unfortunately in the UK they don't go as far as legally enforcing games certification, which means idiot parents buy their little darlings adult games and then blame the games sector rather than take proper responsibility for their own children's welfare.

I'm not saying teenagers can't handle adult themes, most of them can handle a horror movie far better than me, I just don't want to see the games sector dumbing-down or abandoning decent games in fear of the next Fox News/Daily Mail "games made me do it" backlash.

@5 Wanna do a swap? You come to the UK and I'll go to Oz. It's been raining almost non-stop here for weeks, I'm starting to grow gills :(

its a game for christ sake.
maybe they should make parents over their take better care of their kids.

hell ive let my 5yr old play gta 4 for the last 2 years now.
so he's been playing ti since he was 3.
i stick him in a PRIVATE online free roam with cops and weapons off.
then for about an hour all he does is drive around in the cars, flys the heli or sails a boat depending on what he wants to do.

You'll love it when it's hot then >:)

The government had dumbed it down because they think its the right thing, but the ones missing out are the responsible adults, one state is going rouge and brining it early (not mine sadly).

Funny enough they are removing MA15+ as well meaning games like god of war may be out of kids reach, HURRAY!

Thank god im old enough, but wish these laws would of made the change years ago, the old governer general didn't want change (I call laziness!) but the new one let us request...we gave him the ok, now its the process that's killing us.

I had to import mortal kombat here, dang nabbit, I got the big american kollectors edition with the statues, if I got caught that wouldn't of given me a fine, just a loss of cash...but I didnt.

These fools, no wonder no one respects the government or its services here...

By banning the games, they make them more tempting for the young ones. Forbidden is always more desirable.

Sigh.

The extreme right wing religious faction of the government is still hanging on by their fingernails and won't let go. legidslation passed overwhelmingly but they have delayed royal assent until next year.

Why is it we are one of the few countries that allowed Human Centipede 2 but disallow far less extreme content in a video game.

The real question is, why the fuck does this affect New Zealand? We get a lot more snubbing than AU these days, and weve had a R18 rating for video games for as long as I can remember.

@7 you want to go to OZ because its raining in the UK? lol

If you live in England you should be thankful its raining after the drought you had! How many times in the past have the English had to pump fresh water from Scotland? I've lost count lol! However the government will still impose the hose pipe ban simply for money!

@17 you got it spot on! Even though im from UK, when i was younger the only reason i bought Manhunt was because i heard it was banned in some countries!

This is getting beyond a bloody joke (no pun intended), they ban this, but more graphic games like Ninja Gaiden 3 get through, the imbeciles who rate the games here are way too inconsistent, I swear it's like they pick and choose what really violent and graphic games get approved for release here rather than actually checking the content. Why are they banning games that shouldn't get banned lately, another good example of this was when they banned Dead or Alive: Dimensions (after it had already been released, mind you), but at least with that, they revoked the ban not long after and bumped it's rating up from PG to M.

This should be expected though, given how out of touch this government is. Oh well, at least I import any game that either doesn't get released here, gets banned or I'm just too impatient to wait for the Australian release.

Australia has passed a 18+ rating. It just doesn't go into effect until Jan 2013. How moronic is that. If it get passed, implement it now not almost a year later. My buddy just goes nuts over this. He just doesn't buy any games in his country.

I would be totally pissed. The game is awesome and not really that gory like day or dawn of the dead movies (that's gore is mostly just shock value). I'd only use a US account as my main account then.

I really dont care because ive never heard of the game before but there are many ways around it. For PSN games just make a US account and buy US psn cards. And for games like Mortal Kombat just order them online. You get fined if they happen to check your package but tonnes of my friends have done it and been successful

@42 yes that's how to get any game you want. All the restrictions do is harm the Aussie economy. As banned titles can't be bought from Australian shops, Australia has to send profits from selling these games to shops in other countries (not that downloads make any difference.

The bans are only meant to get inforced to games with over the top "frequent gratuitous violence"(did i spell that right), violence against cops, terrorism and indecent sexual acts.
But then i can still buy GTA because theres no prostitution but still has cop killing, MW2 because they added the choice to skip the airport scene, Dead Rising and Dead Island.
So yeah its bullshit here in Aus, we spent the last few years having every waiting for the current Classification board to reach the end of their 7 year run(their only allowed to serve on the board for 7 years) because we were promised that we would get change.
Now nothing, ok so ACT has the reform but its also legal to smoke pot and have 2 plants as long as its contained within your premises(not sure if you still can though), their a lenient Territory so that doesn''t mean the rest of us will get it but even if some states do that doesn't mean anything will change as if its banned in Aus, its banned regardless of which state you live in.
Also while i'm on the topic, would the Australian Christian Lobby please fuck off and stop providing government officials with money for their campaigns so that in turn you get what you want done, what happened to the separation of church and state for fuck sake.
The ACL is one of the reasons this reform will never happen, i hope it does but i doubt it

FFS. First I find out NZ miss out on Skullgirls, now I discover why we haven't got Walking Dead yet. So can I just create a new account on my psn and create USA psn store, download to system and play on my normal account? It's awesome that I'm 27 and am not even allowed to play a video game. We got Mortal Kombat (sorry Oz) yet we didn't get Manhunt, Saw and Saw 2. Mortal Kombat owns those games in the gore factor so wtf gives? I got a copy of Manhunt from Oz back in my younger days (still legal) and being the naieve child I was I tried to sell it online. Fail, got an email/call saying I had to sent it in to some douche for breaking law. I snapped it in half and rubbed it in dogshit before packaging and sending away. Learnt my lesson tho but wouldn't it be easier to just let the whole fucking world play every game and put a rating on it the same way you do with a porno? Government Y U NO HAS A SMART?
