A sequel to Payday: The Heist is in development at Overkill Software. As well as continuing to support the original game on PlayStation Network, the studio is also hard at work on a follow-up. The news follows the revelation that Overkill will be bought by Starbreeze, the Swedish studio responsible for Syndicate, Chronicles of Riddick and the original The Darkness. Speaking following the announcement, Starbreeze boss Mikael Nermark said, "They will still continue to grow the first Payday, to enhance that experience, and move to the sequel." "They're doing great stuff, and I'm not going to change that in any way. We're going to give them the creative freedom to do what they've done so well. He continued, "We're broadening our portfolio. With this acquisition we will also be stronger in the eyes of a publisher. It's one part of what we want to do." Meanwhile, Starbreeze themselves currently have a few different projects on the go, including something called “P13” which it is development with Swedish filmmaker Josef Fares. We don’t know much about the game, beyond the fact that it will launch on PSN. "It's an interesting game,” said Nermark. “It's a different kind of game. I think people will be surprised that Starbreeze is doing this game." So with all this activity, plus continued development on Cold Mercury, you’d think Starbreeze would be happy. But not so. They want another bash at a Syndicate game. "We think EA is a great partner and Syndicate is a great franchise," said Nermark. "If the opportunity arises again, we definitely would want to do another... But no, there's no decision about making another Syndicate.” [via EG]
