Demon's Souls Going Offline Next Month, In North America

Atlus has announced that North American online support for Demon's Souls will end on 31st May.

Of course, the main, single-player aspect of From Software’s RPG will remain unaffected, but the multiplayer features will cease to work.

"It has been a tremendous honor and privilege for all of our staff at Atlus to have been involved with so innovative and groundbreaking an interactive entertainment experience," said Atlus.

"It was also of the utmost importance for us to sustain the game's online experience as long as possible, even beyond the point at which sales could help to offset the expense. Regrettably, the online servers cannot be sustained forever and now the end draws near.

"Thank you to the unparalleled passion and support of the Demon's Souls community throughout these last two and a half years. The online adventure may end soon, but the memory of it - just like that of every boss strategy, every level floor plan, and hidden secret - lives on in the gamers for whom the game was so special."

To mark the occasion, Atlus is planning to hold two separate World Tendency events next month; from 1st-15th May and 16th-31st May, based on fan voting. The publisher also encouraged players to sign in on the last day “before saying goodbye.”

There is no suggestion just yet that multiplayer support will end in other territories beyond North America.

  • Sony should take this and create a server for it themselves because of the success of the series people who come across the 2nd game really need to play this game fully with online....
  • That's interesting. Just last night I was thinking "Man, I need to finally get Demon Souls and play it." Now I have a real excuse.
  • Here is my question, I have the game just haven't played it yet, but is the online part really needed that much for the rest of the game? If so I better get to playing it, if not I will just do single player and not worry about it
  • @2 Do it! Demon's Souls is awesome!!
  • @3 You can Plat Demon Souls without ever using online. Ashame for the US fans, but i am glad it is not shutting down here in the EU yet.
  • not to put EA in more shame, but this is how you should close your servers, yeno just let the fans say goodbye, and not just be like hey where closing this server *no biggey* i mean all games are considered a piece of art *thinks an EA person is reading this noding along*
  • Comment #6 is absolutely correct. I played some Demon's Souls cause this is our last chance to play online. And it is nearly dead and not a lot of people are playing it. At this time it is acceptable to close servers and to give a final sendoff to the few dedicated fans who are still playing. I encourage anyone who hasn't played online yet to get on this. There are a few items and equipment you can only use or gain through online play. The pantheon area is only accessible online. They are minor and non-trophy related but I will miss even these small differences when the servers close. RIP Demon's Souls online.
  • Guess it's time to wrap it up. I hope a lot of people play in these last two months.
  • I'm glad I platinumed this game, awesome experience. I mean, it was hard as f*ck, but that's what made it memorable.
  • Well it's a shame it had to go, but that game is and will always be one of the most brutal and memorable experiences I ever had. Now it make that platinum all the more worth it. But we now have a new issue, does this mean that the platinum difficulty just amped up to a 9 or a 10? after all even with online support, that game was an 8. Just thought I'd throw that out there.
  • Nothing new, they where going to bring it down last year but somehow delayed it a bit. It's not like you can't plat it now. It will just take a bit longer that is. The only hard part is to get that Pure Bladestone, everything else is easy. The boss battles are quite a joke when you have played it out a lot. Even bested 2-2 with my archer guy at quite the low level and damn it was a hard battle but I ended in victory! Also I wonder if I should try to invade someone in 5-3 and steal a few lvls from them with soulsucker. Did that one time and the person just stand still and let me take a lot of lvls. I could even have put him down to lvl 1 if I wanted to. :)
  • people we need to boost!
  • Anyone have any idea why they've asked us to sign in on the last day? I'm a little curious now...
  • I am so glad that it's going offline. I was so tired of Black Phantom Trolls that just constantly drop into your game at night to kill you right before the boss fights. It also won't affect trophies so no issue there.
  • This is sad news indeed .( One of the greatest games ever for sure xD! Dark souls only managed to improve the graphics imo. Demon's Souls was better in so many ways.
  • I liked Demon's Souls much more than Dark Souls. It was such a rewarding platinum to earn. Except for that damn Pure Bladestone. Took me 6 straight days of farming to get that bad boy. Still, my all-time favorite PS3 game.
  • @3, as others have said, you can platinum it without going online. In fact, it's preferable to stay offline if you're chasing the plat as it affects a thing called World Tendency which can make it near impossible to access certain areas and certain items.
  • It wouldn't bother me either way, because I have never used the online, I always sign out of PSN before going onto the game so I start offline
  • Its not shutting down on EU yet! thats great because its the net game on my to get list so i should have passed it and experienced online by the time they go down
  • Are there online trophies for this game?
