Assassin's Creed III's Setting Makes Female Characters "A Pain"

Assassin's Creed 3 will likely not feature any female assassins, according to creative director Alex Hutchinson. And it’s all to do with the setting.

“I think lots of people want it," said Hutchinson. However, "In this period it's been a bit of a pain. The history of the American Revolution is the history of men. There are a few people, like John Adams' wife. They tried very hard in the TV series to not make it look like a bunch of dudes, but it really is a bunch of dudes."

Of course, the Assassin’s Creed series isn’t always 100% historically faithful, so Hutchinson and his team could find a way. However, he reckons the inclusion of female assassins would cause further problems.

"It felt like, if you had all these men in every scene and you're secretly, stealthily in crowds of dudes [as a female assassin], it starts to feel kind of wrong. People would stop believing it."

Looks unlikely we’ll be able to get our lady killer on then, though Hutchinson adds that they haven’t completely ruled out the idea, saying that a final decision is currently “up in the air.”

	I think this is a bit of a cop out, just because there are no overtly strong female characters available for this period in history doesn't mean there weren't any COVERTLY strong women. Although the phrase "Behind every great man is a great woman" doesn't always hold true it has an element of truth despite the feminist overtones. Women were often ignored by men and relegated to the background, wouldn't this be advantageous to an assassin?

	I'll be honest here, female leads put me off. Guys are just easier to relate to, and are overall more badass. Nothing against women, just think that men fit better in a leading role for action games.

	Deborah Sampson would be sweet if she were in the game somehow. I see how it would be hard to put women in the game because they really didn't have rights at that time, but at the same time use the women you can! http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Deborah_Sampson Would be cool if Benedict Arnold was in the game as well.

	@7 I agree with you but I feel like what they want is the game to have as relevant to the history as possible. Then again like they said, some rules can be tweaked. :) Still though like they said having a female assassin going through a crowd can give her away unless some sort of "camo" for the face can be used, sorta like the masks in Revelations.

	@5 sorry to break it to ya but I believe there is indeed a multiplayer because one for the pre-order incentives with the collectors edition is a 'sharpshooter Multiplayer Package'

	You have to think of the time period... If a group of men back in the revolutionary era saw a woman out of place, they would immediately be suspicious of her actions, which makes it literally impossible to be a woman and go anywhere in this game. They are sticking close to historical fact on this one.

	@23 I fail to see how an optional feature that you don't have to touch even once to finish the game can ruin it (unless you want that Platinum trophy).

	@26 im pretty sure Connor could still hav a gf to get laid - the point here is that its difficult for any real significant female carachters in a game with this setting, not that there wont b any females @ all, they'll just b NPCs

	@27: you know what else isn't believable? Assassins wearing clothes that stand out so much? Also, diving into haystacks at 100 mph, only for the protagonist to jump out and brush they hay off their shoulder. THE ASSASSIN'S CREED SERIES HAS NEVER BEEN 100% REALISTIC, so why start now? I say keep female assassins and stop pretending, Ubisoft.

	@10 fair point that Deborah Sampson was one of the few in those times, but remember if it was to be her, or anyone really, they would have to walk, talk, dress and act like a man to get anywhere, so basically if they used her you would pretty much be using a male character that says its a female, that could actually work tho if they done that and showed scenes of her in private with the gear off lol, cool twist would be to play the whole game as a male character and the ending video she takes off her mask and reveals it was a female all along! lol yeah I quite like that

	This isn't exactly sexist, but i think that is a really lousy excuse on the subject. Really i don't think its a big deal if a female assassain is wading through a crowd of men, it's just a video game and one little historical inaccuracy isn't something that will make the game evil.
