Canberra will be the first city in Australia to introduce the proposed R18+ rating, piloting the scheme later this week before the certificate finally goes national in 2013. News of an R18+ rating for Australia has been doing the rounds for a long time now, with an approval passing back in August of last year. The Australian R18+ certificate has since been submitted to parliament last month, and this latest development sees the rating getting one step closer to being introduced across the country. The bill means that previously banned titles like Mortal Kombat and most recently, EA and Starbreeze's Syndicate will all eventually see the light of day in Australia. "This is part of a national reform that will allow adult gamers to view R18+ material in the same way that can already be done for film and printed material," said Australian Capital Territory Attorney-General, Simon Corbell [via ABC]. "But at the same time it will also provide protection to parents and children by giving parents better guidance about what material is and is not appropriate for people under the age of 18."
