GAME Administration Day One: 277 Stores Shut, Over 2000 Staff Redundancies
Written Monday, March 26, 2012 By Lee Bradley

The dust has settled on GAME’s first day in administration and already 277 stores have been shut, with plans to make 2104 staff redundant.

This morning, GAME Group ran 609 stores across the UK and Ireland, employing 5136 staff. Now just 333 stores remain open, with 2814 staff.

It could get worse, too. While the administrators, PwC have indicated that the remaining stores are to trade as normal, there’s still no guarantee that they will find a buyer. Even if they do, investors are unlikely to keep the retailer in its current form. That could mean more job loses.

"PwC can confirm that the joint administrators are liaising with a number of parties who have expressed an interest in purchasing part or all of the business and assets of the group," said a statement issued today.

"However, having reviewed the on-going operational requirements of the business and with the continued difficulties on the high street, unfortunately it has been necessary to close 277 stores throughout the UK and Ireland as of today.

"The administrators are working closely with employees affected by this decision to ensure they receive the support they need during this difficult time to assist with their claims for redundancy and other compensatory payments.”

Joint administrator and PwC partner Mike Jervis said: "Our priority is to continue trading the business as normal while we continue to pursue a sale. The recent job losses are regrettable but will place the company in a stronger position while we explore opportunities to conclude a sale.

“My team and I will be doing all we can to help the affected employees at this difficult time."

Dsiregarding all the obnoxious staff who knew nothing about games, and lived only to target clueless mums at christmas, i think everyone can relate to how sad this is for all staff members who lost their jobs today. That sucks.

It really is sad but, they seem positive that a buyer will come, which i guess is inevitable. Hopefully this time around they'll focus on games rather than shovelware and sales targets.

But what did @1 say? Anyway, sorry to hear job losses but it's business, it's happened before and will happen again. Hopefully someone will buy GAME and re-open some stores but this has hardly been a surprise.

...damn. Makes me wonder what @1 said....anyway.

It's a sad day in the industry when another gaming store closes it's door. Hope like hell those employees bounce back and can find a new job somewhere.

@15 your comment "even if the staff are useless it doesnt mean they should lose their jobs"-lol if you run a business and your staff are useless would you keep useless people on a wage?Unless you were meaning they were useless to the general public but basically only following GAME protocol(which i assume u meant?)-then of course it isnt their fault.
In any case surely if you worked for them you know how management are asking you to behave i.e. pestering people every minute"are you alright there""we have a great pre-owned copy of that"-that you are being a tool and being managed by tools? The people following orders dont deserve to be punished like this but i wonder how many had job satisfaction working there.

It's really sad to see such an iconic British game retailer go under. Even worse is that so many 1000's of people are losing their jobs at a time when there is already such high levels of unemployment and a lack of jobs.

GAME's biggest problem has always been it prices itself out of the market. You go into a game shop and see Skyrim for £44.99 for example, go online and you could see if on Zavvi, Shopto.net, Play.com etc for £39.99 sometimes even £34.99 (at release not current prices). So people where always bound to buy their games online, espcecially in these economic times. Granted i used to buy my pre-owned games at game and i know they make a good profit on those titles. I never bought a game new from GAME.

We had a GAME and Gamestation where i live. Gamestation has closed down, GAME has stayed open. I imagine this will be a common occurence up and down the country.

That said i feel for the guys losing their jobs. I was made redundant before xmas so know what they are going through. Thankfully i found another job quite quickly, so i wish them all the luck.

Out of 277 stores closing, I was amazed that none of the five Game/Gamestation stores in Glasgow city centre, that are within 10mins walk of each other, were being shut down. The fact that none of these stores are being closed is lucky for the staff.

I hope the company can find a buyer, and institute a pricing scheme that will compete with online and help with longevity. Even their current sale can't do that.

Retailer going out of business? Hmmmm, I so very much hope this signals another Video Game Crash! The last one gave us a golden era of gaming, while getting rid of the people ruining this type of media. Hopefully history will repeat itself.
