EA Announce Further Server Shutdowns - Including Titles Requiring an Online Pass
Written Monday, March 19, 2012 By Lee Bradley
View author's profile

Oh dear, here we go again. EA has announced the latest batch of server shut-downs, effectively calling an end to multiplayer activity on a bunch of titles. Some of these required a payed Online Pass.

Across all formats, servers for a total of 11 games are being shut on April 13th, seven of which are on PS3. These include Burnout Revenge, FIFA 10, The Godfather II, Need for Speed ProStreet and The Saboteur.

Rather worryingly, some of the listed games have only been available for a short time and quite a few require pre-owned purchasers to dish out extra for Online Passes. That means that despite generating revenue directly from these titles, specifically for their online components, the publisher has still chosen to halt support.

Spare Parts has been available for around 15 months, while MMA has been in shops for approximately 18. EA has gone on record to state that they only pull server support for titles once the player base dwindles below a certain point. They haven't been specific about what that point is.

Expect to hear more on this subject from PS3T in the near future.

April 13, 2012 - Online Services Shutdown (All Formats)

  • BOOM BLOX Bash Party for Wii
  • Burnout™ Revenge for Xbox 360
  • EA Create for PC, PlayStation 3, Wii and Xbox 360
  • EA Sports Active 2.0 for PlayStation 3, Wii and Xbox 360
  • EA Sports Active NFL Training Camp for Wii
  • FIFA 10 for PlayStation Portable and Wii
  • The Godfather™ II for PC, PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360
  • MMA for PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360
  • Need for Speed™ ProStreet for PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360
  • The Saboteur™ (loss of The Midnight Club access) for PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360
  • Spare Parts for PlayStation 3 Xbox 360

I guess I need to go back and boost a Plat for NFS Undercover because I'm sure it'll be next.

You forgot to correct this also, Lee : "Across all formats, servers for a total of 11 games are being shut on April 13th, seven of which are on Xbox 360."

Hey Alex,

Whenever content appears that applies to both platforms, then you'll see the same information. It's worth noting, however, that we don't prioritise either side. Any cock-ups, like mentions of X360A, are merely that.

We are working on providing as much unique content for PS3T as possible. For example, reviews, which we kicked off on PS3T recently, are always based on PS3 code. Always. Very few sites do this.
You'll be seeing more unique stuff in the future too.

Anyway man, apologies for the mistake.

@ 5 : That's ok, Lee, don't worry. I hope I didn't offend you either because it wasn't the goal. I always appreciated reading your news.

I know the same news are posted on both websites. It's the same team after all. I was just pointing a little mistake. I only want my favorite PS3 website to stay on top !

Keep up the news coming and thanks for your hard work ! ;)

@All those copy&paste detectives: who cares as long as information in given to us?

On topic, this sucks. EA sure has a lot of money, so why can't they keep these servers going? It is even crazier that they're shutting down games that deserve the infamous online pass!

Yeah after I heard this last week, Create went straight to the top of my backlog. Luckily online is very easy and knocked them out in around an hour or 2.

this is why i hate online trophies if someone buys them games that doesn't know the servers are shut down how they suppose to finish their game after all they paid for it.

EA Sports Active 2.0 can be done offline. I've been able to complete workouts when I was unable to connect to the servers. You can't check out workout groups, but I believe you can still earn trophies.

It's not a big deal though, it's not as if I'm anywhere near running, biking, or boarding 1000km for those trophies. Perhaps I can get a second set of sensors to get the local co-op workout trophy though.

Pay for an online pass and you can still miss out. Maybe a price drop is in order, considering there's a part of the game that you can no longer play.

@15 games that have online trophies but the servers shut down they should make a patch to just give you the online trophies without having to go online because they will still take your money even if you can't finish the game you have bought.

I have come to get used to this sort of poor customer support, but this time it really burns me up. They are giving us LESS THAN ONE MONTHS NOTICE. That is absolutely unacceptable. What happened when the 09 titles started going offline and they gave us 4-6 months of notification. This is 100% pure B.S. that we are given hardly 3 weeks notice.

THANKS EA! I will continue to buy your titles USED! And use my devious tactics to obtain online passes for free off the internet.

luckily most of those dont affect me, ive already done spare parts a long time ago but cant recall what trophies were online specifically.

create is the big one - the game is so tedious and so getting the solutions to all levels (since there isnt a dedicate site for it) was imperitive but the online servers were a bit dodgy for a while with downtime repeatedly. such an easy game will soon be impossible, so ill have to get shot of that as i cant see me completing it for plat its not worth it.

the saboteur on the other hand, what is it about the online that is essential?

Spare Parts may not have any online trophies, but there are a few collectibles that require co-op. Luckily, there's local co-op so you don't have to rely on online co-op.

I would hope not. While there is online co-op available, it isn't needed to get 100% on the game, since there's local co-op as well.

"EA has gone on record to state that they only pull server support for titles once the player base dwindles below a certain point."

Then why is Medal of Honor still running? Or is the 2,000 people across all platforms that still play it count as enough. If that's the case and these 11 games that got pulled must have really pathetic numbers.

Maybe EA will work something out with PSN and Live to get the online passes removed from their stores on the titles being shutdown? It's the least they can do IMO.

I guessing MoH is still going to keep going in the hopes that interest will be renewed closer to Warfighter's launch. Or maybe theyll have some sort of online promo when it does come out? I still kept it in case I ever wanted to put in the online hours to get the plat, but haven't touched it since it came out so unless they announce something like that I may as well pass it along.

I sure hope that spare parts doesn't get removed from the store just the online. But it does say the " Online " of 11 different games.
