The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim

Bethesda Was Aware of PS3 Skyrim Issues Before Release
Written Thursday, February 16, 2012 By Richard Walker
View author's profile

As players of the game on PlayStation 3 will readily attest, The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim has more than its fair share of issues, chief among which is the issue of lag. Speaking to Kotaku, Bethesda's Chief Game Designer Todd Howard addressed the PS3 issues head on, explaining why the game didn't work as well as it should have on PlayStation 3.

"The way our dynamic stuff and our scripting works, it's obvious it gets in situations where it taxes the PS3. And we felt we had a lot of it under control," said Howard. "But for certain users it literally depends on how they play the game, varied over a hundred hours and literally what spells they use. Did they go in this building? [And so on.]"

Apparently the issues didn't arise from the larger save game files either, as previously thought. "That's the common misconception," Howard explained. "It's literally the things you've done in what order and what's running. Some of the things are literally what spells do you have hot-keyed? Because, as you switch to them, they handle memory differently."

Howard went on to reveal that Bethesda Softworks knew that the PS3 version might have issues due to a "bad memory situation" but believed only "a small percentage" of players would encounter problems with the game. Bethesda tried to adjust the game's code pre-release to combat the issues, but to no avail.

"The 1.2 patch [released in November] took care of a lot of it," Howard confirmed. Not everyone ceased to have issues with Skyrim on PS3 though, so sent their save games to Bethesda, which the developer analysed carefully for future patches.

Howard cited numerous different game permutations that have put a strain on Skyrim's memory leading to lag, which Bethesda is exploring fixes for by looking at individual saves sent in by players. "We've got one guy who has seven dragons on the other side of the world, and a siege about to happen in this city and another 20 quests running. And, ok, this is what the game is trying to do and it's having a hard time running that."

Rest assured that Bethesda is working on tackling the problems plaguing Skyrim on PS3 then, so it should eventually get better. Fingers crossed.

What assholes. Delay the game and fix it! That's the problem today. Release a broken game, it's ok, we'll fix it later, or not at all (Fallout:New Vegas). If I'm going to spend my money on a product, I want my product to work. I'm buying the game, not a promise.

I am loving skyrim but this news makes me angry! How did they think only a few ps3s would be affected, everyone i knew that had Skyrim had this problem! for me its sounds like we have a contract with Microsoft for early DLC and the PC crowd will be happy too, so fuck it we will fix this later for ps3 owners! to know you have a potentially game breaking bug and still release your game then fix it 3 months later is insane! Again id just like to say I am loving Skyrim its my GOTY for 2011 but this makes me pissed.

Why are people amazed my this? The standard business model in technology is "Build It - Launch It - Fix It".

I'm just happy that people are finally starting to show some displeasure at this. In the past, when I've screamed it from the rooftops, some douchebag has said, "Just get over it!"

The only major problem I had during my time playing it was after 4-5 hours I would have to quit the game and turn off the PS3 then restart because of slowdown, I would drop to a framerate of like 10fps...

Though out of my total play time of nearly 287.5 hours, it only happened 3 times. I can deal with that.

I also had one instance of a dragon flying backwards, and once my horse fell through the world while fighting a Horker...it was gone until I reloaded a previous save.

Still my 2011 GOTY.

If there's one thing I hate above all else in the gaming industry today, it's the "who cares, we can patch it later" mentality.

Bethesda has not got my GOTY of 2011 it will go to a dev who deserves it, the game was a total mess. If the game would have worked then maybe, well this is a big F-up to the PS3 users. Well it's nice to know Bethesda will release a mess of a game & expect to patch months later, any new Bethesda game coming out in the future I'm waiting 6-12 months before I'm buying again.

I'm sure the same people whining about this had no problems with Battlefield 3 having a launch day patch and to some extent still being broken (go ahead, try and play a game with your friends using the party feature). With Bethesda games you know what you're getting into if you buy it on release. Personally my problems were minimal and I was still able to get the platinum without too many freezes. I've updated to every patch when it came out and what matters is the game is much better now and I still enjoy playing it.

They should've sorted it before it went out, but even when they didn't, why couldn't they have just said this when it was released? Then gotten it dealt with straight away! It would've still had backlash but not the amount it has caused! This is a bit rude Bethesda....

Well, glad I skipped on Skyrim... Fallout3 was a pain on my end with constant crashes. I skipped F:NV because friends said it was even worse, and was very cautious about Skyrim, as a result. I didn't trust Bethesda before, and I certainly won't any time soon.

#12 you cannot compare the problems Skyrim had to Battlefield3, at least you could play BF3. Some dev's release a game with issues we all know that & patch with in a week or a day one patch. But Bethesda has took the piss, f minor issues we'll sell you a completely BROKEN game & not patch your game for months on end & we'll even give you a work around that can harm your PS3.

it's wrong for a prestigious company such Bethesda to release a game that would release a game that has problems and then say " we thought it would only affect a few". Guess I was one of the "few" they were mentioning.

When PSN went down due to hacking, Sony came back with the bonus program and gave us free stuff.

If Bethesda does the same, and gives PS3 players the first round of major DLC for free, I bet we'd be forgiving. (and if they don't screw us again)

Every game is broken, it's simply down to how many people find out. The more freedom you give a gamer the more chance they have of doing something you haven't predicted. The only solution is to limit gamer freedom, which may work in some genres but not for RPG.

It all comes down to quality control/testing, the bigger something is the harder it is to check that it all works... proven by @18 commenting "release a game that would release a game that has problems"... that was in just three lines, imagine how hard it is to test games designed to be played for 300+ hours?

So this just confirms what people have been saying since the beginning: they knew the game was broken and released it anyway. Why test and fix the problems yourself when you can let customers pay $60 each to be beta testers? I'm sick of companies who do this with their games. Test the games yourself, and delay them if needed! But no, so many devs and publishers just use the ability to patch as an excuse to release a game that they know doesn't work properly. It's a fucking disgrace. We should be paying $60 for working products and patches should be for adding new features and tweaking things for balance, not fixing the damn game so it works properly!

@22: That's the most ignorant thing I've heard today. Every game is not broken. Every game has bugs, but not all of them break the game. There's a massive difference.

Although i love to play RPG games this is one i will never buy. I played Fallout3...took the bugs/glitches/freezes as they where and enjoyed the game. Bought Fallout:NV with the thought it would be better then Fallout3..but hell it was even worse. So when Skyrim came out i passed, no more Bethesda for me. I admid..game looks great and it sure will be fun to play..but im not gonna pay to do some beta testing.

Its a good thing they admit the game could have issues with some savefiles. But i think they never realised it would be so huge. As somebody else stated...you can play for 300+ hours in this game....it is impossible to get that stable.

Back in the days games were released without any flaws due to the impossibility of releasing a patch to it since there was no online related to gaming (consoles) But now Bethesda give a good example of what gaming industry is at now, simply buy a new game that just came out, put it in your ps3/xbox and in 90% of cases there is an update/patch for it to download.Bethesda isn't the only responsible in all that mess, but of course people bash on the most flawed company (wich is absolutly normal). But name a game with such an almost infinite mix of possibility of beating it and that most customisation.... yup you didn't found any

Look at the size of the game... What do you expect, cause theres gonna be problems...
If it was a game like uncharted or something then this would be a major problem because that games linier compared to this!
Ive spent my hard earned money on this game and ive played over 150 hours and ive had no problems except the funny little qlitches that dont bother me!

Congratulations to every idiot who bought Skyrim on PS3 and voted for it to be GotY. All you did was give a shoddy developer recognition for doing half-assed work and took opportunity from other developers who actually push the boundaries of gaming. No, really, good job.

Im more angry when they sell me incomplete game concerning day one dlc and such but not when they try to repair mistakes that could not been found during beta testing. Even great franchises such as GTA series are known for massive glitches. Especially GTA san andreas. But I still loved it.

Judging by an earlier news story stating it costs $40,000 to upload a patch, how much money has Bethesda wasted because they wouldn't fix a problem pre-launch? They've been dealing with lag issues ever since Fallout 3, why have they not done something about this??

I want to tell people "save often, cause this game is hard." Not "save often, cause this game breaks regularly!"

Skyrim did have bugs etc I don't give a dam about that, but what i do give a dam about is framerate issues so bad that you cannot play the game properly you've just paid for. And I have not seen any other company put out a game in that state it was a total mess, I don't think any other company would as they might respect there reputation obviously Bethesda don't. Yes look at the size of Skyrim & look at other RPG just as big if not bigger that don't suffer from the same problem, at the end of the day if you accept shit you'll be given shit. Sryrim is an excellent game but not on the PS3 it was a shame Bethesda released the game in a mess on the PS3 which tell you a lot about Bethesda.

Your completly right Riven. We can't have it both ways, we complain when games aren't innoventive or try anything new yet when people like Bethesda bring out a title that does what we want and is as enormous as Skyrim we expect everything to be running as fine as one of the run of the mill standard games that aren't breaking any new ground.

The problem with a game like Skyrim is that it's simply too big to find all the problems, I'm not saying it means Bethesda shouldn't have tried to fix all the major problems because then they'd just be using the size of their game as an excuse to not beta test them properly.

Hmm... maybe that's why I have never had problems. I have specifically avoided talking to people in certain cities unless I have to. I try to keep my active quests low and complete them as they come in, then move on to a new area. I guess it makes sense now.

Heck, I saw one games site give Skyrim their GOTY on the caveat it does not include the PS3 version. What Bethesda are saying is it's the hardware's fault, yet I've never had a problem with any other game suffer lag over time. Sorry, I lie: Fallout 3. The only two games I've had problems with crashes and lag. They're brilliant games in big worlds but seems they need to get it together for PS3 versions. Unfortunately I'm in a position where I likely wouldn't get the next Bethesda game on launch because I had so many issues with Skyrim. Towards the end I couldn't wait for it to be over because of the constant lag issues. Which is a shame, because it was a good game.

they had a decision to make, announce a delay and piss off millions of people who were anxiously waiting...or patch it shortly after release. They made the right call. Everyone complaining about the issues would of complained about the delay and called it "unnacceptable for a company with the calibur of Bethesda"

Stuff like this is fixable via patches. Pretty much everyone has connection to the internet now, so saying not everyone has their PS3 online as an excuse..well those people are wrong. If you can afford a PS3, you can afford internet. If not, fix your priorities.

Complain and cry all you want. No game with all of the bells and whistles that Skyrim has is going to be perfect. That is why the ability to upload patches on the PS3 is important. Skyrim was a great game! It's not like Skyrim was released and it was a turd like Two Worlds. The game had lag, it's not like the game was broken on delivery.

@45 People didn't expect perfection; they expected a working game. Skyrim was not a working product.

Is it just me, or are the vast majority of pro-Bethesda posts here from users with less than 100 forum posts?

I enjoy Rage (Bethesda), but disagree with the policy of releasing a broken product with plans to fix it later. That is putting profit before customer service. Big mistake in the long run. Bethesda gained short term profits at the cost of long term customer loyalty. They are going to have a hard time maintaining a PS3 fan base with decisions like this. They should have delayed the release. Forget money - a delay would have been the right thing to do.

Wait so having a post count below 100 makes my opinion what? Not as important as yours?! Yeah the least bethesda owe us is the game working on day one, they've given out a fair amount of patches to fix the problem. The thing is though that with what they were doing there was bound to be problems, it's not to say their tactic of just not bothering was a good one because from the sounds of things Bethesda way of dealing with this was to wait for us to complain because our games were broken which like you mentioned will cost them a lot of sales in the long run.

The problem is that without people like Bethesda making these kind of games and being able to make them financially successfull we're left with the sure things, the games that don't take big risks. I'm not saying that being a company that takes big risks with their games should justify the problems Skyrim had just that Bethesda obviously felt they wanted to save money on certain things so they could make Skyrim profitable enough. But like I said, I don't blame you for being annoyed over this, Bethesda do owe you a working game at the very least.

People talking about a game released that is not a working.? Come on.
Dispite i own both fallouts (plat them both without dlc ) and i own skyrim only 1 or 2 left for plat, i never had issues in my 300+ hr runs. Maybe a little framerate drop after playing for days. I even own a preorder day 1 ps3. and i never turn off the power.so it runs continuesly for years now. I liked fallout games allot. And that was my reason to try out skyrim, for not knowing tes serie. So this post is a positive note in this negative bethesda story...i say bethesda did good i issued never any problems with all 3 games.

Bless
