R18+ Rating Could Hit Australia Next Year

The Australian government could introduce a mature rating for games as early as Jan 1st, 2013.

For years the Australian government has only classified games up to MA15+, suitable only for people over the age of 15. More violent or controversial games, meanwhile, have received either content cuts, changes or just outright bans.

However, a new bill was introduced to the Australian parliament’s Lower House earlier this month, with the legislation for an R18+ category prepared by the Minister for Home Affairs and Minister for Justice, Jason Clare.

Further discussions are expected soon, with the expectation that the bill will pass with ease, thanks to the weight of public support. Australia's individual territories will be free to implement their own legislation.

"The R 18+ category will inform consumers, parents and retailers about which games are not suitable for minors to play, and will prevent minors from purchasing unsuitable material" said Clare.

Looks like Aussies might get Syndicate after all. Better late than never, eh?

L4D2 wasn't banned, it was just dramatically censored to the point where the quality of gameplay was significantly lower than any other version. Mortal Kombat was banned, as was Syndicate. Don't know what else beyond that.

I had hoped the implementation date would be sooner than 2013, but it's better than no possibility whatsoever. I'm keen! Now I kinda hope Resident Evil 6 gets delayed into the new year so no potential content will be cut... :p

Finally Australia's ratings board is getting in line with other modern nations. It's ridiculous that games are still trying to get the same respect as films or music.

At least the BAFTAs caught up. When will there be a Game Academy Awards?

I've never seen such a stupid law...
It's not like kids don't get the game anyway, they ask for their parents to get it at christmass or birthday or anyother lame reason, then get to play a M18+. It's horrible, when I was lining up to buy battlefield 3 at gamestop there was a woman who clearly dont play video games with his child (approx 9yrs old). The kid was all hyped and excited almost at a point to shit his pants.. get the idea? We were like 20 or more in the line to get our precious BF3 and everyone was wondering wtf was this kid doing there.. after almost half an hour of waiting the gamestop dude asked the woman if the game was for her, she answered yes of course.. DUDE CAN'T YOU SEE THE KID'S FACE WITH SHINNING EYES AND OPEN MOUTH?? I then asked the woman if she would buy porn movies to his kid, she said no why are you asking that? I told her that she just bought an M18+ rated game to his child. She didn't care and got off the store... such a bitch

I really hope this passes, it's so stupid that Australian adults can't get 18 rated games, if they want to surely they should be allowed. Here's hoping you aussies can get on the 18-rated titles soon! Good luck!

Even if this bill doesn't pass, I will continue to play R18 games as I have for years thanks to a funny little thing called online shopping. What worries me is this will be used by individual parliamentarians to push their own "won't somebody think of the children" angle and some grumpy church group gets their face on TV for a 7 second sound grab, and News Ltd write up on the dangers of Manhunt 2 and how games are so realistic now it's like you're really pulling the trigger ... right next to an ad for the latest series of Underbelly.

It not just games that were banned outright, it is also that developers are forced to alter or change the game in some way. For example: Vice City had edited course language, Silent Hill: Homecoming had the drill scene edited for the leg and the eye. Ridiculous when Hostel and Saw were freely available not more than two aisles away in most stores.

It has nothing to do with wanting to see graphic content, it is just the hipocracy involved in making that determination.
