SCEA and Polyphony Digital have declared that the Gran Turismo 5 XL Edition is on its way to the US later this month, giving you the game in which improbably shiny cars race around a bit alongside all of the accompanying DLC released for the game thus far, with all of the added features and functionality that's been crowbarred into the game since its release.

Here's the details of the Gran Turismo 5 XL Edition in handy bulletpoint form, via the US PlayStation Blog:

  • Original Gran Turismo 5 game, featuring more than 1,000 cars, 20+ locations with 70+ track layouts, diverse racing styles including rally, track, karting, NASCAR, and more, deep online community features and online racing, plus Gran Turismo TV, Course Maker and more.
  • All of the new and improved features and functionality from all free downloadable game updates up through Spec 2.0 included on the disc.
  • Voucher good for over $20 worth of DLC content, including the Racing Car Pack, Car Pack 2, Course Pack, Racing Gear Pack, and Paint Pack.

The packaging also includes a reversible inner cover with the Red Bull X2011 Supercar looking all slinky and that. You can grab the Gran Turismo 5 XL Edition in the US from January 17th for the bargain price of just $39.99. Look! It's the cover!

I was wanting to buy this but I am not a huge fan of races but given the price and DLC as soon as I see Amazon putting this on sale new for any less then the 39.99 price tag i'll swipe it up.

@3: Hopefully the same DLC content will be available through the PSN Store if it isn't already. Seems kind of silly to have region-specific game releases nowadays, especially for console-exclusive titles.

Be funny if more DLC came out after though...as like films with boxsets it would end up being pointless and silly as then it shows they should have waited (apart from yes, it would save a bit of money before people moan about what I just said...)

@9 the only 1 thing I would ever want from Forza is to drive my Vauxhall Astra VXR since Polyphony were skimpy at best with Vauxhall and a number of dealerships that werent included but I wouldnt waste time and money on Forza just for that when I have the real thing outside.

I find it funny how the Stealth cars and Chromeline cars not only have never been mentioned but also arent included on the XL version so techincally your getting 'some' DLC not 'all' but Im happy with the original disc and the Chromeline pack I got on release so Im not missing out

I'll get thumbs down for this but a few things Forza does better than GT5 -
Custom paints - create your own colour rather than having to own it
Personalize your car with stickers/graphics and show off your creations when racing
More depth to modifications (wheel diameter and width for example)
Race mods - in GT5 there are so few cars with this option they may as well not bothered
Forza doesn't have Standard and Premium car models
That's just a few but at the end of the day GT5 feels so much better than Forza to play. Its the options outside of the racing that let GT5 down. I expected so much more from GT5.
Before I get flak for this I am not an Xbox fanboy. I have about 10 games on Xbox and about 150 on PS3 so if anything I am PS3 fanboy

@18 I think the main thing about GT5 is that they tried so hard to making it a racing simulator that they took the game feel out of it! i love GT5 much more than Forza but the few things Polyphony Digital need to do is more western cars, easier menus, more premium cars, and the online interface needs to be changed, If they sort that out GT6 whenever that will arrive will be unstoppable! Thats why Forza is getting better reviews and so on, it feels like a racing game and is simple to navigate!

Well if you plan on importing it I hope you do take into account that first of all it has a dlc-voucher so this means you'll need an USA account.

I guess this wouldn't really be a problem but if I remember correctly GTA5 dlc is tied to an account and from what I gathered you won't be able to play it with any other account, not even on the PS3 you download it for.

If they did change this or I'm misinformed I'd gladly get corrected here but this is the main reason I won't buy this game, can't support it if they decide to have gamerprofile specific dlc.

@20 they changed it when they brought out the last bit of DLC because people were complaining about that im sure you can have share it between two ps3's now

@20 you could already use it on two PS3 (and probably as many as you wanted as it was unlocked for your account rather than by download to the system). The complaints were because only the purchaser had access so any sub-accounts didn't have the content available unless they purchased the content themselves. A free download from store opened the dlc to sub-accounts just before Christmas

@21 & 22
Thanks for the reply people, its not that I own 2 ps3's (yet anyway), but I do often like to play a game I own a 2nd or even a 3rd time on another account (offline) and enjoy getting trophies for them, and not being able to have acces to all your content is just rediculous.

I realize this is not feasable for a game like GT5 since it takes so much time to even complete but nonetheless it was the sentement behind it.
So the problem isn't that I want to use it on more systems I just want to be able to use it with the gamerprofiles I have on the system, and as opt1mus76 replies this is now the case, which is cool and I think I'll pick the game up one of these days.

One last question though does this mean that accounts that aren't on PSN are able to use this content right? (as in extra profiles not connected to PSN)
Or is the sub-account meant to download the dlc to use, as in the other profile also needs to be a PSN-member?

I was hoping for GT6 with all cars rendered in high detail.
Great series though.

@23 I think you can use it for a non-PSN member as I would assume that the content is activated within the game data rather than via online profile/personal game save (it may have been before the 'sharing' download) otherwise there would be no way for them to know which accounts the content should be unlocked for
