Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3

Act Surprised: There will be a Battlefield 4 and There'll be a New CoD in 2012

Seriously... What is it with sequels being effectively confirmed before the game's even out or before it's barely been released into the wild? With the next Assassin's Creed and Saints Row being pretty much confirmed, we can now rest safe in the knowledge that there will also be a Battlefield 4 in an unspecified year, and a new Call of Duty in 2012. No surprises there then.

"There is going to be a Battlefield 4", EA's Frank Gibeau confirmed during a keynote address at the University of California, which is hardly a revelation given that Battlefield 3 has become EA's fastest-selling game, managing to sell over 5 million copies.

"This feels like day one now," said Executive Producer, Patrick Bach. "It's exciting. The whole Frostbite 2 thing has opened up a big landscape ahead of us so we can do whatever we want."

So, it's possible that DICE would continue to build upon its successful Frostbite 2 tech for the sequel then? "There's nothing we know about now that the new consoles would do differently, rather do more," Bach added. "More processors. Bigger memory pools. Everything we have and more."

So, Battlefield will return for Battlefield 4, and CoD will also continue with its annual iterations, according to a quote from Activision CEO Bobby Kotick: “As we focus on 2012, we have a strong product pipeline which features a minimum of two highly-anticipated new titles from Blizzard Entertainment, including Diablo III, and a new Call of Duty game from Activision Publishing.”

It's likely that Treyarch will once again get its turn with the Call of Duty franchise and either whip up Black Ops 2 or something completely different. With the success of Black Ops under the developer's belt however, don't be surprised if the next Call of Duty game has 'Black Ops' in the title.

So, why are publishers spilling the beans on sequels early? To no doubt keep the investors happy and show that a long-term investment is something worthwhile. Either way, it means that you get to keep playing the games you love, and judging by how many of you have bought both Battlefield 3 and Modern Warfare 3, you'll be wanting to get your hands on the follow-ups, whenever they should materialise.

I'm glad BF4 is coming out but i think COD should take a break. Make people wait and then come out with a new game. Now itæs just lame. Hope BF don't die to many people like cod

In my opinion MW3 is better than BF3 (NB just my opinion, if you prefer BF3 that's cool with me). However, if Treyarch are going to do their usual "copy MW, strip out the good features and add zombies for the kiddies" then I will definitely be more interested in what DICE do next year re MOH2 or BFBC3.

Activision should drop the yearly schedule by dropping Treyarch totally. Let IW/Sledgehammer release more map-packs over the two year period whilst working on engine improvements, it's still very quick but looking a little flat in places. As proved (and admitted) by DICE, a brand new engine isn't an ideal solution until the next-gen consoles arrive.

@5, perfectly said. Its annoying that they take out the good stuff and add zombies, lets face it, zombies has been done to death. Forgive the pun.

I'd rather a new bad company than battlefield 4 coz the campaign in BF3 is possibly the worst FPS campaign I've ever played. And really I don't see the need for a battlefield sequel after a year. They should get MOH2 and ba company 3 out and wait til 2013 for bf4. I don't agree with CoD being a yearly release and I won't agree with battlefield being a yearly release. If they are truly only developing games that have only 1 years worth of gaming in it these guys arent developing games properly...never mind investors they should be wanting to keep gamers wanting to play their games for years that way they will always know when a new version comes along people will buy it and play it. Apart from 12 onwards final fantasy is a prime example, so is god of war and uncharted and batman

As long as the market is there they will keep selling the product. CoD is just a good example now with an optional extra subscription to pay for year after year. Its the nature of the beast. Personally I'm looking forward to another Bad Company.

surprise about one thing. we're just hearing about cod 9 now.

we were hearing black ops before mw2 and in June before black ops we knew about cod 8 (mw3). this is a later announcement than usual.

though I'm not suprised at all about the announcement. I can only hope were not going back to WWII, I like more modern setting games

BF4?? WTF I'm not even lvl 20 and we already get aware about a new title?... Please DICE don't join the darkside of actimilkingvision, BF3 is good enough for years not months..

BFBC3 would be cool tough with all the same character and the gold hunting.. with the frostbite engine 2 of course.

@13

There's 19 battlefield games vs 9 CoD games.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battlefield_%28series%29

Even if you only include the main Battlefield games and not spin offs/expansion packs.....there are still 9

@17 yeah but in each of those Battlefield games over all different formats, PS1, PS2 etc etc there has been vast developments to get to where it is now where as COD hasnt done that much since its release apart from adding textures and detail, the online is pretty much done, getting any more from it is like getting blood from a stone, from what Iv played of MW3 its only development for online was Dog Tag mode the rest was the same.

I cant believe that Activision has the guts to put out another COD title after the reception it received online on forums etc a break is very much needed to think up something new but clearly the money cow needs to keep getting milked twice yearly.

BF4 would be good to see however I would rather see another Bad Company I preferred the characters to connect to where as BF3 didnt really give much relationship between characters.
The campaign of BF3 wasnt too bad, loved the halo jump n quite a lot of stuff but the one bit that killed it for me was the jet chapter it was pretty boring mainly because you couldn't pilot the jet unless your online, a bit like BFBC2 there was no helicopter part in the campaign so unless you piloted a chopper on BFBC online was full of unexperienced pilots crashing into everything.

YAY for B4, but I sure hope they can keep it fresh, that is what makes battlefield so great, each games plays completely different. and tbh B3 is not all that different from BBC2. and like #19 said, I'd prefer a BBC3 too, I really liked the characters in BBC1 and they kinda messed them up in BBC2 (ppl that didn't play BBC1, probably didn't notice much of their personalities) but I'm sure they can that back on track:P

I don't even bother looking at COD games anymore, so yeah, whippee, our childrens children will still be able to play a new COD game every year...

*WHAT?! NO! REALY??* im surprised, you got me!
a bfbc3 would be nice, cod should take a break for atleast a year.
hardly played black ops and im not getting mw3 nore wil i be getting the next cod next year, its done for me.
bfbc1 was good then and was greatly improved in bfbc2 (sp & mp) so i would be happy to hear when they announce bfbc3.

I somewhat prefer Treyarch over Infinity Ward because Black Ops was a decent length (8 hours for me) and it had a really interesting story. The Modern Warfare titles are cool as well but they're too short and fall flat in the end (except the first). I really enjoy the new Medal of Honor (just now finished it) and can't wait to see a second. I have yet to get BF3 but plan to. I love the Bad Company games and would like BC3 to be DICE's next title.

BF3 is worse than BF:BC2 in both MP and SP. MW3 is worse than MW2 for MP (but still better than Black Ops), and I can't comment on the SP yet because I'm too hung up on MP, as expected. I personally thought Black Ops had a very cinematic and enjoyable campaign, so it will probably be harder to top. Although MW is a total package thanks to the return of Spec-Ops.

Here's hoping they can both step it up several notches, because frankly it's three for three, on "3" failures in the MP shooter department for me this year; Gears of War 3, M3, and BF3.

1) Why is everyone bitching about game announcements before release? They are just acknowledging the obvious. They're just confirming it for the fans that there's more coming. You people are the most delicate babies.

2) It looks like Cod brought BF down to their level. lolfail

The BF4 thing is just confirming that they are going to make one. Most likely MoH2 will be out in 2012, BF:BC3 in 2013, maybe another MoH in 2014, and then BF3 in 2015 in time for the PS4. At least that's what I hope.
On the CoD thing I wish they would develop a new engine, but maybe IW/Sledgehammer is starting on one (new game engine) now and Treyark will do their normal thing take the cod4 engine slap a new skin on and add zombies, call it Black OPS 2 and sell the shit out of it (even though the game will be no different then their last two). That way in 2013 we get a CoD with a new game engine. A guy can hope can't he.

There has been a Battlefield release every year since it started in 2002. EA is just as bad at milking its products. I play COD for the single player and Spec Ops, so I love it.

Saying that, I think Treyarch should be dropped. Not because there games are bad, but because they develop other games and dropping them will give us a two year gap. Maybe that will help restore faith in the gamers who constantly bash it?

Perhaps Treyarch should just make a zombies only game and just leave the CoD name behind if everybody thinks they are really bad at making CoD. Let's be honest people, Treyarch is good for one thing and one thing only: zombies. But they would HAVE to innovate it, because we went to the Moon for god's sake! Maybe add a level creator to the game so we can make our own custom maps on the consoles (for those of us who CAN'T afford a gaming PC).

And for those of you who say that they want to see a singleplayer for the story, didn't zombies have a storyline?

one thing about battlefield is dice is the sole developer. most of them spend at least 3 years in development. look at bf3 it actually started development when frostbite 1 was developed. 1943 was worth it for a 2 year development. plus dice does betas and alphas, actvision doesn't.if you think i'm lying where were they for cod4 and after. besides next years cod will be done by treyarch and bf4 will spend at least 3 years in development. the reason cod sucks now is the sole fact activision more concern about making money than quality. if you don't beleive me before mw2 was released they removed call of duty from the title and lost 25-50% of the preorders almost immedatily. and just as quick put call of duty back in the title. cod is the same game in every way just in a different outfit and minor improvemnts (cod elite doesn't count, i mean actual gameplay) every release. bfbc play different than bf3 as does all battlefields. the main series of battlefields are 1942, bf2, bf3, bfbc, 2142, heros, play4free, online, and vietnam. and each plays different (due style, target audience, vehicles, weapons, setting, and game modes).

Why is everyone complaining? As long as people will buy them, these guys will make the games. They are a business after all. I really dont want another COD from treyarch, unless its sad and realistic like World at War. MW3 has a really balanced and fun MP so far, and I think they nailed it perfectly. IW/Sledgehammer should just continue their two year games, at least that way, people wont complain about the yearly CODs. As it goes for Battlefield, I want a new Bad Company.

It's interesting everyone rags on CoD for releasing yearly and may or may not be carp. Yet EA does the same thing and it's all good. Just because you hide that fact by changing up the titles does not make it any less true. Whether it's BC, BF3 or MoH, it's all updated versions of the same games. negative me all you want, it's true.
