Sonic Generations to Include Unlockable Original Sonic the Hedgehog

Tipping its hat to the spiky blue streak that's 'faster than a cyber razor cut', Sonic Generations will enable you to unlock the original Sonic the Hedgehog game from 1991 to celebrate the series' 20th anniversary, meaning you can add it to the other 12 versions you probably already own in some form or other.

Still, for those yet to experience Sonic's genesis on the Genesis, this is the perfect opportunity to do so, and it's completely free too. Sonic Team's Takashi Iizuka broke the news of the unlockable game to Destructoid during Paris Games Week, where the game's hub (a selection of scrolling doors) was also shown off.

Sonic Generations is out on November 1st, 2011 in North America and November 4th in Europe. There's still a demo to check out on the PlayStation Store too.

It's always good to get a free game (especially one as amazing as this), this adds to the reasons why people should buy this.

Too true. Still cool to include it in Generations though.

@1 I think you'll have to do something to access it if it's an "unlockable" extra. Free stuff is always good but seems a bit random to include the first game, this now being the 3rd way of obtaining it on the PS3 (I think). Would be cool if you could either unlock several of the games by progressing through the story or have a sort of compilation game, providing all the original levels that have inspired the levels for this game...

And now that you talk about PSN... is this game going to have the trophies that the PSN version has?... in my case I already have the PSN version and thrie cheap trophies but for new players on this game, are thay going to be able to have those trophies or this "unlockable" is a different version from the one on PSN? In the end the game it's the same game, just wondering about those trophies.

@7: That's a worse deal because while Sonic 3 and Knuckles is still the best Sonic game ever made, nobody should ever be subjected to Sonic 3D Blast. It's awful in every way. Before there was a Sonic 06 to be universally hated, Sonic 3D Blast was the lowest point in the franchise.

Sonic blast was ok.
Anyway sonics on the mastet system and game gear were the best.
A total different experience from any of the mega drive games, they didn't need an add on cart gimmick.
The chaos emeralds were hidden in the levels not in a ring tunnel, pinball machine or sphere making it a decent challenge

@8 I used to buy games for the trophies and maybe try to platinum them. I realized how much of an idiot I was. Play the game for the game itself. Forget which console you play it in. I will probably buy it on Steam cuz it costs 30 bucks. How much will it cost on the PS3? Like any other disc game ($60). So you would buy a game for twice the price only for trophies?? Smart choice.

If you have a different reason not to play it on pc (like, your pc is not good enough, or you don't have a controller for the pc) then buy it on PS3. But not only for the trophies.

at 11 - most of use are here because we like trophies. and i dont care if its 10 times more expensive ill never buy a pc version of a console game. it just slows my laptop down and never works right (i played trine once) and thats not the most graphically great game.

i still have an unused portal 2 steam code, doubt ill ever bother to use it.
