Staff working at Bodycount developer Codemasters Guildford were called to a meeting earlier today in which they were informed that Codemasters is proposing closure of the studio, closing down its action and strategy teams to focus more on successful racing IPs like DiRT and F1 at the company's Birmingham and Southam studios, with the Birmingham studio expanding to include a second team.

"The company is proposing to retire from its facility in Guildford, most recently responsible for the shooter Bodycount," Codies confirmed in an official statement issued to Games Industry.biz. "If progressed, the move will affect 66 Guildford studio personnel; staff are now involved in a consultation period to discuss the proposal."

The Guildford studio also worked on Operation Flashpoint, but its most recent project, Bodycount was poorly received and went on to achieve disappointing sales numbers. Some staff from the closing Guildford studio will be able to apply for jobs with in the company though, as noted in the same official statement.

"In the event that staff working within the Guildford site are affected by the current proposals, they will be encouraged to apply for suitable positions on campus and in the Birmingham studio," it states.

Bodycount launched on August 23rd in North America and September 2nd in Europe.

It might be better to focus on game that they know how to do instead of wasting money in other unsucessful games.

They should have spent a little more time developing instead of posing round warehouses for hyped up developer videos. Sorry to hear about job losses but Bodycount was the biggest disappointment of 2011!

Grid 2 release date please! Does anyone know if there will be a F1 2012? I was thinking about getting 2011 but there are a lot of games coming out this Fall. Also, I'm excited about F1 coming back tor the States next year and i definitely want a game with the new Austin, Texas track. It looks amazing.

Operation Flashpoint: Dragon Rising was good if overly hard in places, Bodycount however was a complete stinker so this news doesn't surprise me in the slightest.

It's still a shame that another developer has gone under :(.

Bodycount used the 1.0 ego engine while the newer flashpoint used 2.0. Go figure.

Most dissapointing FPS I've ever played (been playing them since 1994). Also, when you use cross hairs why does the screen shake like an earthquake?

@5 They Asked The FOM For License From 2010 Till 2012. And If 2010 Will Sell Good (Which it Did) They will Probally Make 2012 So I'd Say Yes

Codemasters in general has backed some real stinkers: great ideas with poor execution. Anyone remember Turning Point: The Fall of Liberty? Great idea - Germany invades NYC in WWII - but the game was essentially a stiff PS2 cardboard cutout marketed as a PS3 title. As for this title Bodycount - well, it's like a go-cart going against American Muscle cars: Killzone 3, Resistance 3. It never had a chance. Take that motor off the go-cart and stick it back on the lawnmower, boys. Time to get back to work.

I feel for the developers losing their jobs, but good economy or bad economy, the only way to really sell crap is to get in the fertilizer business.
