Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3

Gamescom 2011: Infinity Ward’s Robert Bowling Talks Modern Warfare 3’s Campaign, Specs Ops & The Battlefield Rivalry
Written Sunday, September 04, 2011 By Richard Walker

In what will surely be another blockbuster year in terms of sales for Activision’s poster child franchise, attention turns to Modern Warfare 3 this year in what will be one of the toughest release windows yet.

With fierce competition coming from all angles and genres – Skyrim (RPG), Battlefield 3 (shooter), Assassin’s Creed: Revelations and Batman: Arkham City (action-adventure) – pressure falls on Infinity Ward to keep the Call of Duty franchise fresh and at the top of its game.

We caught up with Infinity Ward spokesman and Creative Strategist, Robert Bowling, at Gamescom this year to talk campaign, weapons, Spec Ops – and its new survival mode – and of course, the Battlefield 3 rivalry, ahead of its November release.

Check out what Bowling had to say on the above and more below, and if you haven’t already, check out our Modern Warfare 3 preview from the show itself.

If they want Call of Duty to stay relevant they need to stop pushing new releases on us every year. Take some time off to make a better game.

I admire them for going into detail when it comes to laying out the game (exact streets in France, Germany, etc.), but if you're going to put that much time, using Google maps, to go into extreme detail why can't you put that much time into upgrading your graphics? :S

Go buy COD 4 for $5 its the same damn thing as this game. 2 years to make a game and they can't think of 1 new thing to add to the multiplayer except charge you $50 for a leaderboard. : ) Let the great BF vs. COD comments start

The bigger and more popular a game, the more attention and criticism it receives. Exceptionally true for Call of Duty. I think it's rather juvenile to continually talk trash about a successful product. If you don't particularly like Pepsi because you prefer Coca-Cola, do you go to Pepsi machines and tape a piece of paper full of hate on each of them? If you don't like it, move on.

BF3, not going to say anything else... (If you don't look at the fact that I wrote that I was not going to write anything else, and ignore this sentence)

The thing is, the way he talks about it, the game 'sounds' good. If this was coming out and nobody had ever heard of CoD i reckon lots of people would be excited by it. The problem is, since CoD 4, every CoD has felt the same/worse, and the lack of customer/game support has been disgusting. Hacked leaderboards, hacked gameplay, glitches not being fixed, overpowered perks/weapons with no balance being added, deathstreaks, killstreaks... stupidly overpriced DLC maps, and no care payed to the player just the money.

Like others have said, there is simply nothing new anymore. They could do with taking out 3 or 4 years and coming back with a beast game, rather than just plonking everything in a different environment. But i feel that would lose them their steady flow of income so it won't ever happen.

I hate it when the infinity ward devs talk about how tactical it all is, when it really isnt at all. You either camp (90% of people that play the game which makes it so boring and shit in my opinion) or you just run about. Thats it!

Wow all this MW and CoD hate is really unbelievable. Dont people realize that Battlefield releases have been the same. 3yrs in a row. Overall I am not a big MP fan but everyone also seems to complain that MP is either camping or run/gun but I have to ask what else do u want? What else is there? Either way im sure the SP will be amazing like always. That's all I care about

I am pretty excited for this. Got this pre-ordered along with Skyrim, the new DBZ and BF3. Unlike some people, who just bash other games like little kids, I am going to enjoy all the games. I hope the killstreaks arent too overpowered, and that the game feels the same as COD4, instead of MW2 and Black Ops.

all in all people bitch about C.O.D. but its not infinity wards fault activision has more than 1 company making a title at any 1 time. Infinity ward have all in all stayed true to Modern Warfare, carrying on the story from COD4 and not jumping from era to era like treyarch. I must say i was going to give it a miss for BF3 but after playing the alpha i don't like the direction they have taken ..... don't get me wrong i will buy it eventually for the campaign but as multiplayer FPS goes i would rather play BFBC2 or COD4......

plus @23 when was the last time you saw a sniper stood in the middle of the street with a Barrett? snipers are supposed to be in cover stop whingeing and get better if that fairs you could always user a noobtube!

I'm laughing at all this hate between COD fanboys and BF fanboys. Its very unnecessary. Any game will have its supporters and haters. No game is perfect because at least one person will complain about the game. No one is ever happy with any game. But I happen to be a fan of both Call of Duty and Battlefield and I enjoy playing them both. And I will enjoy playing both titles.

@18 Actually there has not been a single year free from Battlefield since its first release in 2002. If you count expansions as well as the 'main' series. This is the same with Call of Duty, but since 2003.

Both EA and Activision milk their titles for everything they've got. IW should go independant.

Hackers, quick scopers, lag-switchers, 8 yr olds playing an M+17 game, and just plain jerks who swarm the COD multiplayer have ruined the series for me. I will play it for the campaign and Spec-ops, but they can keep their $50.00 Elite service.
