There's over 20 drivable vehicles in Battlefield 3, including fighter jets, helicopters and tanks, spread across 12 different classes. You'll be able to assume control of armoured transports, infantry fighting vehicles, battle tanks, scout helicopters, attack helicopters, fighter jets and attack jets, all of which you'll be able to tinker with in Battlefield 3's vehicle customisation component that DICE claims is "much bigger, deeper, and more tactical in nature than in previous Battlefield games." In fact, there's over 80 unlockable specialisation upgrades for all of the vehicle classes, giving you plenty of scope to tailor your vehicle to suit your play style. Each customisable vehicle class has three slots for unlocks, with a secondary weapon slot, gadget slot and upgrade slot. And the more you play with each vehicle, the more unlocks you'll attain, giving you a broader choice of specialisations. How you tool up you vehicle will affect your abilities in a multiplayer match, so will your fighter jet carry laser-guided air-to-ground missiles to dispatch tanks from above, or will you opt for the dogfighting option and pack anti-air missiles? You could also carry IR flares to deter missile locks or keep a fire extinguisher in the cockpit to put out fires when you get hit. The choice is yours. Lightly damaged vehicles can now also recover armour if you retreat into cover, giving non-Engineer classes the chance to use vehicles smartly without having to rely on an allied Engineer to come along and help out with a repair job. Past a certain damage threshold, vehicles will be unable to recover armour and will still need repairing, turning the repair tool into the Engineer's vehicle defibrillator in essence. DICE hopes that these subtle gameplay refinements will make Battlefield 3 even more intense than before, with Engineers able to bring vehicles back from the brink and non-Engineer classes able to maintain a vehicle with careful use of cover.
