Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3

Gamescom 2011: Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 – Survival of the Fittest

Like Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2, Modern Warfare 3 is a game of three parts. It's like a big club sandwich, with a single-player spread, multiplayer paste and a hefty dollop of Spec Ops squeezed in between it all. And while it's a familiar sandwich, it's nonetheless one that we're happy to eat all over again, even if some of it has been regurgitated. That's not to say that Modern Warfare 3 looks like vomity lumps of bread and sandwich filling. Far from it in fact, as MW3 retains the same slick look and 60fps fluidity of the last two games, guaranteeing that it'll sell by the bucketload.

Slightly rubbish sandwich analogies aside, repeated success does not a great game make however, and while Modern Warfare 3 is sure to set tills ringing when it launches this November, there may be a question mark for some people regarding the game's quality. With Call of Duty being an annually updated franchise, using the same old user interface and engine for the last four years or so, you'd be forgiven for thinking that Acti has settled into a groove with the series. But CoD, as everyone knows is an unstoppable juggernaut of a franchise and no matter what you might think of it, there's a reason why it's so massive.

Modern Warfare 3 still runs at a blistering 60-frames per second, it still looks like the dog's nadgers and well, it plays like Call of Duty. What more do you need to know? In the interest of writing this preview, let's assume that you need to know a more than what we've written thus far. Our hands-on session with Modern Warfare 3 takes us into a darkened room, donning a headset and hitting Spec Ops with a member of Acti staff guiding us.

Dropped into a cobbled Parisian market square for 10 waves of Spec Ops' Survival Mode, with a handgun and nothing more, we follow our co-op buddy to the first wave of enemies, which are easily dispatched with the pistol as you'd expect. The ensuing waves aren't such a cakewalk though, so we're told to go and spend some of our cash tooling up for the next nine sets of baddies at the designated weapons cache. This shows up as a pistol icon on your HUD, where you can access a shopping list of weaponry and upgrades, all with a price tag.

While we picked up a Model 1887 shotgun from an enemy we dropped earlier, we decide to ditch our pistol by purchasing an ACR 6.8 combat rifle, which demotes our shotgun to the role of secondary weapon. Ducking through a souvenir store and up a staircase at the back, we make our way to a high vantage point to pick off a couple more waves, before dashing back down to the weapons cache to refill our ammo for a cool $750, and upgrade our trusty new assault rifle with a red dot sight while we're at it. Locked and loaded, the countdown for the next wave commences, and we dig in for the fight ahead.

This next wave is a mix of aggressively hostile shooters and bombers with explosives strapped to themselves. Suicide bombers, if you will. We resolve to take down the bombers as quickly and as efficiently as possible, so with one of my best friends' voices ringing in my head (he's in the Army), we concentrate our fire on their torsos rather than their heads. Apparently Army training dictates aiming at the largest part of a person (the torso), which makes a lot of sense when you think about it. That said, nothing beats a satisfying headshot, so we remember that we're playing a game and revert to aiming at heads.

Some of the remaining enemy riflemen then entrench themselves behind a parked car at the side of the street, so we cook off a grenade and toss it at them, taking care of the small group in one fell swoop. With a few seconds to recoup before tackling the next onslaught, we're directed to the area denoted by a grenade icon, where you're able to buy support items like flash grenades, frags and other explosives. There's also a jet-shaped icon where you can splash out on airstrikes, predator missiles and other air support items. Our buddy gets a sentry turret and installs it at the entrance to a side street leading to the square, where we decide to take cover before the next wave begins.

The next wave is a pair of attack choppers that take both of us by surprise, and our partner is downed. We very nearly follow the same fate as we sprint to revive our bleeding-out buddy, but manage to make it relatively unscathed, returning us both to full strength. With some concentrated fire from our collective assault rifles, we manage to bring down both helicopters fairly quickly, before preparing for more enemies to come. At this point, we're offered some back-up as the cavalry arrives and four allies rappel in from choppers, giving us the opportunity to top up our ammunition once more and prepare.

Enemies with riot shields, more bombers and infantry set upon our position from all sides, marked on our mini-map, closing in for the kill, as the sentry gun helps thin the numbers. As the waves become increasingly difficult, we switch between the shotgun for close encounters and the rifle to keep those pesky bombers at bay. Reaching wave 10 is a real high-fiving moment, but we decide to plump for a bit of decorum since this is the first time we've met the person we're playing co-op with. So, we just say, “nice one, thanks” and leave.

Spec Ops was insanely popular among CoD fans, and Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 looks effortlessly poised to deliver more of the same great gameplay again, but with some additional modes and objectives thrown in for good measure. You might be entirely unsurprised to find that MW3 plays exactly like its forebears, but then, if it's as slick as it's always been, then this isn't really an issue. You just have to ask yourself whether you're ready for some more Modern Warfare, cast very much in the same mould as what's gone before. If you're suffering from CoD fatigue, then MW3 isn't going to offer you the antidote, as the phrase “if it ain't broke, don't fix it” springs to mind. But if the answer is, “hell yes”, then you're going to be in for a treat. Nonetheless, we just can't seem to shake the nagging feeling that we've seen this game several times before, and yet having played it, we want it. Such is the inexplicable, irresistible power of CoD...

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 is out on November 8th, 2011.

this will be a 1 day rental for me after I see how easy the trophy list is and the only reason I'm even renting it is so I can finally find out the ending to the MW series

I totally 100% believe your preview and every word you say makes me wonder how and why they will be allowed to charge full rrp for this game. Like what one comment has already said what are you getting? A 5 year old game with new locations for £50???? No thanks I'd rather buy a fresh new developed game for that kind of money. I'll buy this used just so I've completed every CoD but no way will I give activision a penny they don't deserve.

i look forwars to the yearly release of cod..... i have had every entry, but i am going to sell them all minus black ops, i have platinumed all of them prestiged multiple times, and played the single player scores of times. They have been great games, but there is no point in keeping them when all they do is lose value. Besides, ive got and will have my arms full with, Crysis 2, Blood Stone, MW3,Battlefield 3, ratchet and clank all 4 one, SWTFU1,Uncharted3 whew.... so much to do, and did i mention college @ the same time!!!!!

SSDB = Same Shit Different Box. Even the author of this article admits as much. Rental/bargain bin for this trophy whore. And you know xbox is gonna get DLC early and first so if you support Acti as a PS3 gamer, you are essentially rolling over and taking it in the u-know-what.

@5, it wont really SUCK, but its just the same old thing again, and again.

COD4 was like a line of coke, I was sexy AND smart, we are never going to get that feeling back... no matter how many CODs we play, all those other bumps just make you look like a douch standing at the bar!

@5 You complain about the kids, when its very obvious that you are one, or atleast you are as immature if not more so than a little kid, when you learn to spell and talk like an adult, maybe someone will take you more seriously.

I myself am looking forward to this game, I dont care what anyone says, I still dont understand the hate for CoD, of course its sales speak otherwise, I mean really, what is it? Is it Activision that makes you hate it? You talk about Battlefield, but you guys know full well its supposedly better multiplayer is on very limited time as it is an EA game and their servers are horrible, they never get new servers for their games, they just abandon older games and they still arent that great, bottom line, every game has its pros and cons, I'm just sick of seeing all you gamers bickering like old hens over these two games. just STFU and enjoy whatever game you prefer.

I'll probebly borrow this from one of my cod geek-friends. I'm acctually interested in the story and spec-ops, but I will not by this game. I'm waiting for BF3.

MW3= Only Plat BF3= Epic multiplayer and good story!!

@27 I'm not saying im perfect, but I do have a 2.00 K/d ratio. That means I dont suck (dont camp either) so find another argument. @26 Guess BO is the first COD you have played... The reason so many hate it is: Same graphics and engine since cod 4 (released in 2007) same gameplay. Re-using many guns from cod 4 to cod mw2 and now to cod mw3. Also treyarc released 4 map packs with only 4 mp maps and 1 zombie map each. All 4 of these map packs, cost the same as another cod. It is another cod! Thats why buying MW3 will net you just a pack with 4 DLC and a survival mode instead of zombies. COD should stop all this shit and return to their roots. COD 4 was calm and balanced. And battlefield 3 dont have shitty servers, its you who have shitty connection. Its BO that has shitty servers. Most of the time in a host migration every one just disconnect. So here is the reason.

Whoa that was a LOT of text :P

I dont even care what people say about Cod. I dont understand how they can change a franchise like this. Someone tell me, what are they suppose to do to make it different? its a FPS, if they change the engine, they might lose the old fanbase. So how do you change a game without changing the engine? add new maps, new guns, brand new story and game modes right? Isnt that what they've been doing?

I had major COD-fatigue after Black Ops (or MW2.01 IMO) came out, sold it the day before the first DLC and swore I'd never fall for the same-shit-different-box again.

However, with EA/DICE trying to start up immature, petty squabbles with Activision in every interview and twitter post, every BF3 trailer/preview being based on the PC (as if they're hiding the console versions) and the BF3 infighting (the PC community treats console owners like shit) I'm really starting to consider MW3.

I can't stand zombies but Spec Ops was great, a proper horde mode where you had to use proper tactics rather than running around herding mindless idiots and exploiting scenery defects! I'm also very interested in the leaked possibilities for 32 players!

I agree with @22 - CoD 4 was the perfect game, it had very little gun problems and killstreaks were perfect! MW2 ruined CoD imo, all the shit they introduced really spoiled the fun for me... If they made CoD4 with new maps and guns, everyone would be happy!
And for you BF3 fanboys commenting on here, it will be crap on console! Maps were designed for PC 32vs32, not 12vs12(or however much it is) on console. MW3 will be okay, but nothing new and BF3 will be great!... But on PC ;)

@34 I don't see how BF3 will be bad on console.. seriously I still play BfBC and servers are still full, no lag, no servers drop well.. no issues at all.. But I have to agree, CoD 4 was trully a masterpiece and I still play it sometimes But every other Cod except W@W wich was cool too but BO and MW2 both have online issues ie: server migration failure, map loading freezes, disconnect from servers..(for some reason it always happen when you are a killing machine), Anyway I have faith in BF3 and they won't let us (console players) get drying in a corner.. Oh, one last thing, did EA ever made pay someone for new maps? NO (vietnam doesn't count as it's a completly different game)

@26 Activision has very shitty servers also. Last time I attempted to play black ops at my bro's place it took us 30 minutes to get the full party into a game without anyone getting kicked out or the game not starding etc...
It's always been like this, MW2 was unplayable for me online because I always got disconnected and yes, my internet connection is just fine.

26@ If you ever had experience with the COD franchise, you would understand why we are mad.It not activion,is the lack of effort!!!When MW@ came out, after some time people said that they would have not fallen for the same thing again.Black Ops Steped it up for many true COD fans and gave us options and new controls and little tweak a few here and there with the gameplay and it looked like COD had a chance to shine again, but then this ass***** come and try to fool people by giving the people the same game as MW2!The only difference is that the story goes foward, the survival mode, but nothing else!Only a few tweaks here and there, but everything you saw in BO will not come here in terms of improvement.IT DOES NOT F***ING MATTER IF YOU GO TO FRANCE OR NEW YORK IF YOU DON'T IMPROVE THE GAMEPLAY!!!

Let's not be too hasty. Everyone said that Black ops lacked good graphic, and was dissappointing. I think this will be good. The only thing is the lack of parental knowledge of non-gamers. I hate those kids who's rage quitting, but lets try to get Activision and Treyarch to make the matchmaking put mor even players in group. That way, we don't have to play with most of the kids. Just sad they're ruining it with non-strategy play. This campaign will be super awesome, and survival will be a twist of nazi zombies, campaign, killstreaks, juggernauts, and some crasy heli's. The multiplayer will have kids, but lets mute them and kick ass.
