GAME Brings Digital PSN Content to Stores

UK retailer GAME has signed a deal with Sony Europe to sell PlayStation Network content, including downloadable games, add-ons and PS Plus subscriptions.

The content will be available at 42 GAME and Gamestation stores from today, eventually rolling out PSN’s “full range” to all 620 stores by mid-September. It will also extend to Europe in due course. No dates have been mentioned.

To start with, only Sony's first-party output will be available. Games mentioned in the initial announcement are MAG, God of War Collection and WipEout Fury. The Killzone Steel Rain Map pack and the Uncharted 2 Siege Expansion pack game add-ons are also mentioned. Eventually, third-party content will be included too.

GAME have given Eurogamer some indication on the pricing. God of War Collection, for example, will cost £24.99, while the Killzone 3 Steel Rain map pack will cost £3.99.

A GAME spokesperson said, "every product is individually displayed and marketed with a specific price point." The indication is that content will not necessarily be priced in line with the PSN store, which may lead to some bargainous deals further down the line.

When you buy the content in shops you will receive a 12-digit code on either your receipt or in an email or SMS text. This code will be used to redeem the content online on your PS3.

The deal is part of Game’s effort to become "Europe's biggest retailer of digital games.”

@#3, I thought this too, but maybe it's for people who don't want to use PSN cards or a credit card on their account? I don't understand why someone wouldn't want to use a PSN card.. but oh well. :/

I bought GOW collection from a GAME shop for £20, so why do they want to sell the digital download for £5 more?
Is there any extra content? I don't think so.
Bad move I think on the part of Sony. The only PSN stuff they should sell are the cards, but on the other hand perhaps the competition will pick up among the stores.

I bought the boxed version of the God of War Collection for £17 new when it came out, so are GAME offering people the chance to pay 49% extra for the privilege of filling up their HDD instead of having it on disc?

Am I missing the point? Am I mad for wanting a boxed game which doesn't require downloading at all and can be reinstalled within minutes?

It reads like a Dan Brown book, but a part of me thinks that Sony and their partners are actually using the fear of identity theft resultant from the PSN hack to put a premium on buying PSN content without having to use a credit card. You could almost postulate that if Sony are profiting from this fear that they could have had some incentive to create and prolong the incident which caused the fear... oooooh, cue sinister music! lol

Sounds good, I'll never use it tho.
It'll always be cheaper/easier to buy it on PSN

This is good, because Game give a lot more Discounts than PSN, therefore we can get DLC and games cheaper :)

People will only be interested in this if they end up selling stuff for less than the Playstation Store price. The only thing I could perhaps imagine working is GAME selling "Online Pass" codes at a discounted price alongside pre-owned games that no longer have the codes.

Considering at one point, i saw red faction:armageddon on the PSN for £54, why would I woant to purchase PSN stuff, that is already expensive, from a third party who, after a little while, will start upping the price and making profit!

Could mean boosting sales of pre-owned games, which is what developers don't want. Like the idea, but don't want to see the industry vanish completely.

This will be mainly for adults buying for their kids (older kids obviously), or people who know that buying a PSN card will make them spend more money! If I can buy a PS+ Subscription I'll do that! I'll be saving money in doing it! :P

I really don't get this, why would anyone bother to travel to GAME to buy a specific PSN redeem code for the same price or more than they would spend just buying direct from PSN. If content is going to be cheaper at GAME then why the hell would Sony give up their monopoly.

Neither party are stupid but I guess I must be as I cannot see the benefit of this deal.

@4 but lets say someone wants ps plus for 3 months and nothing else that cost 15euros and he dont have a gredit card so if he buy a 20euro psn card he will got 5 more euros that he will not know were to spent but if he buy it from a store he will have 3 months plus and the cost will be 15euros so it helps a little

that's kinda cool i guess. say if you wanted to get someone a psn game as a gift, or like some kids that didn't have their own bank card they could just go pick it up at the store.

The greatest trick SONY ever played was making you think GAME didn't exist.

So now i can go into town to my local GAME and buy a my DLC, then come home and input a code into the PS Store to download into.
Instead of just staying home and logging into the PS Store and downloading it.
I can see this being a huge success.....

It's a great idea.

Especially if your have yourself a GAME card to rack up some points (Even though 1000 is only a £1)

Also for everyone bitching that it is stupid as it costs way more to buy them instore than on PSN...

Trade in your old games that you don't wan't and guess what...you save money! Can't do that on PSN

this is good for gifts, ppl who want only 1 thing off psn, bundled deals (game + dlc) and ppl who are shopping in stores already. not a bad idea. EB/Gamestop is going to start this soon also.

this will also offer sales on dlc outside of psn sales

I sorta don't get this :S Unless I'm saving pounds there's no way I'm gunna go out to get something I can do at home! However, it is kinda annoying that you have to credit your PSN account with a minimum of £5, even if you only want a new theme or something, so if they're going to have EVERYTHING, then fair enough. But if not, I just don't get it, sorry :/

Some parties are still spooked by the possibility of another PSN breech and don't want their credit cards numbers stored with Sony. That would be one reason why this company could attract people. Other than that, yeah, why buy it at a store when you can get it at home? As others have said, unless the price is significantly lower, it is not worth it. How much freedom will Sony give this company to lower game prices anyway? Probably not much, unless it's on some bargain bin, six-month old title that is fading into obscurity. The jury is skeptical at this point.

Hang of if people like my self don't want to use there credit cards on psn they have to go to Game anyway to buy a £20/£35 PSN card.

So what if I wanted something that was £5 Instead of buying the Cards I can by the game/dlc from the store i was getting the psn card from

If it is anything like the Mircosoft game specific points in Game then you will be able to use the points on anything. Obviously check with staff before purchase, but getting a £3.99 PSN card is better than a £25 one if you only want something cheap.

Just to clarify if you buy a card for say Limbo on the 360 you can then use those points on anything on the market place allowing you to have a more specific point count to perhaps your needs.
