Red Faction: Armageddon

THQ Smashes the Red Faction Franchise
Written Thursday, July 28, 2011 By Richard Walker

THQ has confirmed that it's putting an end to the Red Faction franchise in light of the latest game's poor sales performance, the publisher declared during a recent conference call. That means no more hammer-swinging and Martian mass destruction.

THQ Chief Executive, Brian Farrell told investors that "we do not intend to carry forward with that franchise in any meaningful way." Given Red Faction: Armageddon's relatively solid critical reception, the game's lacklustre sales come as something of a surprise.

Red Faction developer Volition still has the Saints Row franchise however, and the Red Faction team has also now been reassigned to Guillermo del Toro's survival horror project inSANE, which is due to release in 2013.

@1 you do know they aren't recalling all copies of RF: armageddon, you can still buy this game, they just aren't making any more games. @2 I agree really, focus on the Saints Row franchise I think.

Red Faction 1 was ace! I poured heaven knows how many hours into both Single and Multi-Player but 2 was average at best and 3 was rubbish so I haven't bothered with the latest two.

If the 1st game was to get a PS3 remaster with trophies, then I'd be all over it :).

Damn that sucks. I enjoyed Guerrilla, minus the MP part (trophies and all), and the demo for Armageddon wasn't awful.

I LOVED the multiplayer in Guerilla and to just destruct. I knew somewhat this would've happen, told my friends that this underground scenario is just plain boring. I hopped for something look-a-like New York acctually, that wouldn't have floped.

the first and 2nd were ok i guess, i completed both, though the second did get a bit boring, haven't played any since, and launching the new game on psn for nearly £70 wouldn't have done them any favours

Guerrilla was amazing,I loved the campaign, didn't play mp, but what they did with this new release was shocking, way too linear

You completely changed red faction, took out the competitive multiplayer and DIDNT see this coming? Wow. Fucking noobs running the show there huh?

So the fans voiced there displeasure with your shitty game, so you take your ball and go home?
I'll be sure not to buy any of your super hyped up turd games. That way, your company can get purchased by ea.

You had a fantastic game in rf guerilla, why stray so far from it?

If they would've stuck to the roots this would've never happened. I was so disappointed that guerilla was third person and even further disappointed that Armageddon had no MP. When I was a teen (with no money) I spent most of my summers working outside then coming in and setting up bot matches on RF1&2. I would literally play them all day...goodbye RF. You will be missed.

They should have just made Armageddon free-roam like Guerrila was. They solved the problem of the boring travels between missions by making the level enviroments better and giving the game more weapons so why did it need to ditch the free roam?

Just being able to go around destroying and rebuilding (so you could destroy again) would have been awesome.

They fucked up going linear instead of sandbox. Stick with what works and the people want. Hopefully a lesson learned. Too bad.

WELL... They better make some new franchise that implements highly destructive environments...Thats the whole reason I liked the games.

I guess that's what happens when you take a couple steps back, if the new one was like Guerilla and had a real MP this wouldn't have happened.

Totally agree with #11

Every other Red Faction was fucking awesome!
They clearly bazooka blasted themselves in the foot on this game when they removed half the shit that everyone enjoyed to begin with from the last three games.
Bunch of morons, in what way is your continued effort on saints row suppose to come as a comfort to me Volition/THQ, i care not for it; therefore you shall receive no profit from I towards it.
Both companies have lost alot of my respect and im sure now thats the case for quite a few other Ppl.

I remember playing the first red faction on the PS2 and loving it. What a great game, they lost me when they started making it third person games tho. It would be amazing to play the first game in HD so i hope they do this at some point

Eventually this $60 bucks for EVERY SINGLE game out there is going to catch up to this industry...

I like it when the companies know their dog has fleas and they go ahead and price that bitch at $29.99!

The problem with armageddon was, it was a dead space game, the enemies looked the same and it just didn't feel like a red faction game at all

Guerilla was their best and I was disappointed in Armageddon's MP. I wish it was more like Guerilla. Oh well, at least I platted both games.
