Final Fantasy XIII-2

E3 2011: Final Fantasy XIII-2 Preview – Learning From the Mistakes of the Past

I’m going to come right out and say it. I enjoyed Final Fantasy XIII. Sure, I may be in the minority, but for me, it did a lot of things right. I can however sit here and say it did a lot of things wrong as well. Final Fantasy XIII-2 presents an opportunity for Square Enix to make amends and rebuild some bridges for fans of the franchise by fixing a few of the elements that they thought the Japanese developer had missed the mark on. Listening to fan and critic feedback, Square Enix is looking to deliver that iconic Final Fantasy experience with Final Fantasy XIII-2, or in layman’s terms, delivering the game that Final Fantasy XIII should have been. Yes, there will be the odd Final Fantasy XIII spoiler, so beware.

Like Final Fantasy X-2, Final Fantasy XIII-2 is a direct sequel to the Final Fantasy that came before it. Final Fantasy XIII-2 picks up five years after the events of Final Fantasy XIII, with survivors looking to rebuild Gran Pulse and the original’s hero, Lightning, presumed dead by many. Her sister, Serah, who played a small part in XIII, will become one of the main protagonists in XIII-2 and when New Bodhum is invaded by monsters, her and Noel - who rescues Serah - take off on a journey to discover what happened to the original game’s hero. With both new and returning characters, new and old players alike should be able to slip into the story, regardless of whether they finished XIII or not.

Our gameplay demo throws us into the thick of the action as Serah and Noel face off against a large hand called Paradox Alpha. Serah is the magic user of the pair, who can craft a magic bow or sword, depending on the distance of the enemy that she is attacking, while Noel is a melee specialist, who dual wields two swords in combat. While the paradigm system from XIII is intact, Square Enix has taken other steps to make the battles more epic in scale and this is mostly down to what the dev is calling “cinematic action sequences.” They sound fancy and yes, they look really fancy, but in essence, they’re just dramatic Quick Time Event cutscenes that reward or punish the player on whether they’re successful or not. The main thing is, they look super pretty and although they’re not groundbreaking, they do break up the constant paradigm shifting heavy battles, which is always a plus.

Listening directly to player feedback, Square Enix has reintroduced towns to the franchise, with us catching a glimpse at one with NPCs galore littering its grounds. With everything from friendly NPCs who make comments and NPCs with speech bubbles above their heads, offering multiple dialogue options, all the way to secret hidden content, several branching paths and other optional content, players are encouraged to explore these regions and have been included to offer player choice and give players a more complex experience than in Final Fantasy XIII. Players can even jump in XIII-2 and Square Enix has even included rain and other weather effects to keep things fresh.

Moving out of the town and onto a path to track down a demon beast called Atlas, we catch our first glimpse at the “Mog Clock” – a new tool that'll change how players take on the game’s enemies. Rather than seeing all the enemies roaming on the map in XIII-2, enemies will only appear when a player is close and when they appear, a timer appears. The quicker the player reacts and initiates contact, the more likely they are to gain the upper hand going into the battle. Attack when it’s green and you’ll receive a reward, but attack when it’s red and you’ll be dealt a blow and suffer a penalty going into the battle. Time is of the essence. Thankfully if you don’t want to fight every goddamn creature though, you’ll find NPCs battling and ultimately slowing down the odd creature who could otherwise become fixated on you.

At the end of one of the random battles, the Square Enix rep on hand pointed out that when defeating a creature in battle, they’ll turn into crystals. These monsters are then added to your inventory and will become the third playable character; in this instance, Flabanero and Warhorn joined the ranks of Serah and Noel. Quite how we feel about that at present, we’re not sure. Do Square Enix expect us to bond with a characterless creature? What is this? Pokémon!?

The mantra of player choice spills over into the field as well, with live events (small cutscenes that you can choose to watch or ignore), choosing whether to unlock and seek out a treasure chest that’s located by your accompanying Moogle and Alyssa giving hints about possible treasures over the intercom, all there to distract the player and give them more things to do off the beaten path.

Square Enix has also introduced live trigger choices as well in various instances, where players will be given an option via a dialogue tree on how to tackle the situation. In this instance, Serah and Noel have the chance to fight Atlas directly or they can attempt to try and manipulate a device to weaken him. Opting for the latter, obviously, the pair are then sucked into a temporal rift created by Atlas – a gap between realities – where they must solve a series of puzzles to escape. Thankfully though, by solving the puzzle the player resolves the anomaly which affects the reality that they were born into – in this case, it weakened Atlas to the point where his hit point gauge was at halfway. 58 seconds later and Atlas is toast and we move onto the final sequence of the demo.

The final sequence sees us take the perspective of Lightning, who is incidentally riding on Eidolon Odin, her white horse kitted to the roof in armour. In a place that Square Enix isn’t ready to talk about yet, with Lightning now much stronger than she was in XIII, she faces off in a far bigger battle than Final Fantasy XIII players and beyond won’t be used to – actually fighting against a Chaos Bahamut, which she attacks from horseback. In a short fight sequence, it’s clear that Square has taken extra steps to improve the cinematography and ramp up the cinematic experience tenfold. Speaking of cinematic, what better way to end the demo than with a cinematic action sequence, where Lighting finds herself running up the side of a building, dodging the advances of Bahamut before banishing that SOB back to where he came from.

So, if there’s anything that you take out of this preview, it should be this: Square Enix has listened. Whether they’ve listened enough though, only time will tell, but if you just factor in the inclusion of towns, the cinematic action sequences that break up the sometimes mundane paradigm switching combat and the more varied and less linear field experiences, those were easily three of the biggest complaints from the original. It’s a good first showing for Final Fantasy XIII-2, that’s for sure, now let’s hope that Square Enix builds upon these foundations and deliver fans of the franchise the game that they wanted in the first place.

Final Fantasy XIII-2 is scheduled for an early 2012 release in North America and Europe.

It was the paradigm switching for 1 reason alone why I hated 13 its a reason why my FF10-X2 game save still remains at chapter 5 for the last 5 years because it got repeatatively boring. Its alright saying that they needed to change for the future of the series but there's a lot more hardcore fans out there who would of wanted both fighting patterns.

Think about it if the could of added classic turn based battles and the current set-up both parties would have been happy in hat departments. Just the lack of exploration and annoying characters which seem to come through every FF game lately that are taken this once great franchise down.

How original Ff X- 2 followed yuna on a journey to find tidus, fast forward 8 years Ff13-2 take serah on a journey to find lightning, think 13 just needs to be shelved and continue making other games

The worst part of XIII for me were the characters. You had a b*tch, a douche, a pedophile, a wuss, a valley girl and a NOW activist. I didn't like a single one of them, and with 3 attempts to play it, I could never get more than a couple hours in.

Off topic: They need to make a new FF Tactics.

On topic: I loved 13. This looks like it'll be better, so I'm happy. Just wish I had of pre-ordered this from Future Shop now with all of my other 2011/2012 games.

I enjoyed XIII, to an extent, but I got to say, I'm iffy about this one. Motomu Toriyama isn't the best director, in FF history, with a track record the likes of FFX and X-2, and seems to really like giving his entries the sub-par sequel treatment.

Why does everyone forget about 9 . . . Anyway, I don't know if a sequel of a really boring, slow, and linear game with annoying characters will bring me back into the series. I hate the battle system.

Still waiting on FFvsXIII, this is starting to sound like Tales of Symphonia 2...and that didn't turn out too well in my opinion.

I liked XII... Sure it was linear, but thats a change from the most part of the franchise. It had paradigm shifting, I thought this was a great idea (however a little tedious). It had a decent story, although you had to do a bit of reading to fill in some of the blanks.

I'll get this and I imagine that any other self proclaimed final fantasy fan would too wether they liked XIII or not... If you like the earlier ones so much, why aren't you playing them instead of complaining about the new ones??

Looking forward to it. FFXIII was an incredible experience for me. It looks like they paid too much attention to the whiners though from the looks of it.

That might be a turn off....on the other hand, there's Lightning.

There was a lot wrong with FFXIII, far more than this article lets on, but I'm prepared to give the sequel a chance based on what I've seen so far and Square's apparant willingness to admit they messed up.

Paradigm system returning- Good. I personally was a big fan of this system and would welcome an expansion of it (more classes, for example). Mid-battle cutscenes are good (less so the QTE's), as while many of the optional bosses in XIII provided a good challenge, it was often a matter of rotating through a sequence of paradigms and wearing down the monster's HP total, which didn't bore me as such but I can imagine it did others.

Towns, NPCs that don't spout the same sentence every time you run past them, and more optional content? Good. Mog Clock seems a bit gimmicky, but I don't really care either way. Quite like the idea of rotating monsters to give you a greater choice in paradigms- Noel and Serah look to have the standard 3 each, so you;d be very limited if they weren't there.

Things they need to fix from the last game that weren't mentioned here- give me more control over my party earlier in the game. Who I used in XIII was completely locked in until Chapter 9, halfway through the damn game. This looks to avert this a bit by your party consisting of Noel/Serah/monsters (love that idea, by the way- we've not had a proper beastmaster for years), but if we never get a larger party, that might be a problem in itself.

Also, get rid of the damn stupid idea of capping the levelling up system so you can't go past a certain point in the Crystarium until a certain point in the story. If more player choice is the goal, and it certainly seems to be, then the least Square can do is give us control over how strong I can make my characters before a boss fight.

Finally, bring back the airship and world map. Playing XIII often played like Final Fantasy: Super Mario Brothers, in that you play a series of linear levels one after the other and cannot backtrack or explore the world as a whole. As such, the world itself feels very unreal, unlike in earlier titles where you could see how everything was laid out and run round the world as you see fit. I could understand how this wouldn't work for the parts where you explore Cocoon's ruins (given the world's not in the best of shape), but there's no reason why it can't be done on Pulse.

FF13 is boring as hell. I play it occasionally and it's a struggle. I think I'm nearly at the free-roam bit. Who knows? It's been very samey for a while. Personally I found Lightning the best one. At least she hardly speaks. Sazh, Snow and Hope's constant whining between every battle is beyond painful. But Vanille ... if there were an option to load her into a rocket and fire her into the sun, I'd do it in a heartbeat.

"So, if there’s anything that you take out of this preview, it should be this: Square Enix has listened."

But listened to whom? In reading this article the phrase repeated over and over again is "cinematic". That's not at all what I want out of a Final Fantasy game. Not even a mention of story? But oh, right we get towns now - rejoice!

FFXIII essentially played itself and was one long corridor with fights and cut-scenes mixed in. The big change with XIII-2 is a more "cinematic" and "epic" battle system with QTEs. Great. This isn't a change at all and more of the same mindless drivel from XIII.

Here's a recap for those not wanting to read the article:
Square-Enix has listened (to shooter, twitch gamers or those with ADD) and has made the auto-battles more cinematic and epic! Plus you get towns and QTEs. There, satisfied?

@#9 I happen to love Final Fantasy 9... Great characters and fun story, plus you get to catch frogs with Quina which always made me laugh, lol.

I enjoyed Final Fantasy 13, I know the battle system was different from the previous games, but it was definitely a fun game for me. I personally feel that Final Fantasy 7 and 9 are the best ones of the series to date.

i love all FF Games but i have to agree tha 13 was a bit linear, you aren't free to explore at your free will, so i hope that 13-2 can be a little bit more like FF 7,8,9 with a more deep gameplay and fabulous story line, i miss the "olds" FF...

#19 I resent that I have ADD and hate COD and the like and loved XIII.

I'm all for exploration and non-linear game play. But, to an extent a linear game can get it's message and story across to the players easier.

I agree with #6 & #26: just make a FF Tactics for ps3 and start Kingdom Hearts on ps3, why make it for PsP/NDS and not for ps3!?? it owned on ps2!

and i do hope it won't be as disappointing as FFX-2, it had free roam and quite some jobs to master but overall it was less intense than FFX which rocked!

I know I'm probably just a relic for saying so but why can't they just re-make FF7? I don't literally mean re-make FF7, though that would be cool, but basically just turn based battle systems, levelling up with stats and HP and MP, character skill sets like FF9 or equippable magic like 8 or materia or something materia like. Why not just take all the things they did right like the epic side quests once you had free roam of the entire world map, (yes young padawans, they used to have big maps of the entire world that you could fly around in your Highwind/Ragnarok/Invincible, and it was COOL!!!) epic bosses like Ruby/Emerald/Omega Weapon/Ozma, secret materia/spells/skills to make you AWESOME!!! and just get back to characters that hated themselves which is something we can f***ing relate to!! Unlike the overly cheery cheerleader girls and the unlikeably cocky Jock guys. Honestly it's like being in Highschool with all the people you hate!! Bring back Final Fantasy!!!

Anyway, if you disagree you are part of the problem, these games are not better they just keep getting 'developed' further and further from perfection. Even Chrono Trigger, FF6 and Mystic Quest Legend with their crappy SNES graphics utterly own FF10 and FF13 in every important respect. A pretty face cannot hide an empty soul from a true Final Fanatic...
