EA Hits Back At Bobby Kotick

Yesterday, some comments Activision boss, Bobby Kotick made about EA in an interview with Edge magazine came to light, prompting the publisher to come back with a statement, after Kotick criticised the way the publisher operates and how its development studios lack identity.

EA's Vice President of Communications, Jeff Brown succinctly and deftly countered Kotick's comments, placing Activision's biggest franchises in the firing line and making reference to the Infinity Ward debacle and legal wranglings with Tim Schafer and Double Fine over Brütal Legend.

"Kotick's relationship with studio talent is well documented in litigation," Brown said. "His company is based on three game franchises – one is a fantastic persistent world he had nothing to do with; one is in steep decline; and the third is in the process of being destroyed by Kotick's own hubris."

Brown has a point. World of Warcraft was acquired when Activision swallowed up Blizzard after merging with parent company, Vivendi Games in 2007 and Activision has confirmed that it'll be scaling back the Guitar Hero franchise ahead of a declining market.

On the other hand, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 continues to sell by the boat-load with 20 million units shipped to date. The CoD franchise shows no signs of slowing down either, with Black Ops potentially being one of the year's biggest games when it launches in November.

So, is this the last we've heard of Activision and EA bad-mouthing one another? Don't be silly.

@2 Well Acticisions big 3 franchises are guitar hero, COD and Tony Hawk. But Tony Hawk is pretty much dead now.
So I think what he's referring to is WOW, that being the fantastical world that Kotick has nothing to do with, since Blizzard had WOW before merging with Acticision.

Regardless, he does have a point, Activision is known for milking franchises. At least EA (while they do have a lot of franchises) take more risks on original IP's.

Acitvisions offerings dont interest me that much, Guitar Hero is hit or miss with me, I've only enojyed Modern Warfare 1, not a huge CoD fan, and WoW is seeming to be for those who choose not to live a real life, no offense to the casual players, but the stories about some WoW players is just plain pathetic.

He forgot to mention the Starcraft and Diablo franchise, again something that was brought over with Blizzard.

Both are fairly strong, maybe not as big as CoD or WoW but still bigger than most.

Its a shame that both these companies make my favourite games but have a really bad reputation. I have to agree that Activision very nearly destroyed Guitar Hero which was a great franchise, but just got messed up when they released five games in one year. I fear that CoD might go the same way aswell, with two CoD titles being released next year.

This seems a bit strange coming from Activision of all people. At least when EA make a tit load of money from pumping out the same game every year they invest it into interesting stuff like Mirror's Edge and Dead Space.
