Amnesia: The Dark Descent dev Frictional Games has announced that its soggy undersea sci-fi horror SOMA will be heading to PlayStation 4 in September, available for download via the PS Store.

To coincide with the launch date announcement, there's 10-minutes of new gameplay to watch in the video below, showcasing the game as it nears release, having commenced development back in autumn of 2010.

But how come SOMA took five years to create? "The aim with SOMA is to explore the unsettling aspects of subjects such as consciousness, identity and our very existence," Frictional's Thomas Grip explains on the PS Blog. "We didn’t want to do this by simply having some ham-fisted exposition now and then, we wanted the player to experience this first-hand."

Taking its horror to the murky briney depths of the sea, SOMA will be available on PS4 on 22nd September. Check out the new gameplay trailer below.

  • Loved Amnesia: The Dark Descent so Im looking forward to seeing how this one turns out.
  • Seriously? THAT looks so badass. And nothing wrong with a game that draws from Dead Space and even more Alien Isolation. Such a hybrid would actually be the best that could happen. Mix that with bioshock and you have pure awesome. too bad I HATE jump scares lol
  • Hope it has a platinum.
  • @ #1 Wow. It takes some real guts to post something as ignorant as you just did. Anyway, game looks great so far. Might be a spontaneous purchase for me.
  • Wow ... I guess none of you fanboys have a sense of humor. But seriously, you guys are creaming your pants a little early, methinks. Which is the perennial condition with fanboys ... Five years in development -- and they can't be bothered to have some rudimentary animations for your character interacting with the environment? Nothing facilitates immersion like a 90s Myst-style pointer. You couldn't come up with an enemy that doesn't look 95% like a Bouncer, even down to the lights on the head (OMG but the colors are different!)? I guess they were too busy contemplating "consciousness, identity," and "existence." I concede that may be bearish on this game to the point of pessimism (and that is offensive to some), but I do give games a chance, especially indies (for example, I was able to look past Apotheon's many, many flaws given its treatment of the subject material and the way it captured the spirit of the era via the art style and combat). But for this one, I just can't ... it is a just yet another PS-Store-only, generic atmospheric survival horror that copies (not pays homage to) its AAA predecessors. Enjoy the penises, fellas (joke).
  • LOL I saw the humour on comment number one... Chill guys! Lighten up... Yeah when I saw "nudity" in the rating I was like - uhmmm so boobies? I'd still have to see a game that shows a penis.... OH WAIT - The Order: 1886 had wieners in them LOL so yeah they happen! Back to the game, if this is anything like a cross between Dead Space 1 and Alien: Isolation then it's in my "have to own" games list... nothing could be better than a hybrid based on that!
  • I wish there were hands though... Alien: Isolation had the worse next gen CGI for characters BUT they surely made it a point that Ripley had beautiful hands...
  • I couldn't really tell what was chasing him, but it didn't look terribly scary.
  • Day one, I have been patiently waiting for this. Unlike #6 I don't mind lack of animations at all. If it's about atmosphere I doubt I will even notice as long as I am scared most of the time. Amnesia games were solid and if this is exactly the same just under the deep sea, it will be ok with me=P Glad to finally see release date, now please announce No Man's Sky!
  • Keep it clean please, guys.
  • After reading about this in Game Informer, I honestly figured it would be 2016 or so before I got to play it. Glad to see it is arriving earlier than I thought. Day one.
  • @#7 I love survival horror but alien isolation got boring once you knew what the alien was gonna do and although I did enjoy dead space I didnt find it scary or creepy, it didn't even make me jump.
  • Looks like a mixture between Bioshock and Alien Isolation. It's not a HD remake so its a yes from me.
  • Jumpscares? Dead Space? What the fuck are you even writing? It's another one of those games where you are defensless and have to "run, hide or die" from an individual enemy. Ok, I loved the shit out of Outlast, that was horror made to perfection, but everything after? Are you serious? This isn't even scary, it's a big daddy chasing you, what the actual fuck? I could understand the tension of an Alien, appearing from a vent in front of you, or hearing his deadly sounds, still, a very bad copy of Outlast at that in my opinion, but a fucking robot? I hope the game changes in development, all I've seen are 10 minutes of absolutely nothing going on in a genre which is supposed to keep you on the edge of your seat
  • I'm going to keep an eye on this as it has potential but I need to see some finished PS4 footage first, not something from the PC Beta.
  • @16 I know its your opinion and all but I just have to point out that Outlast was full of jumpscares, Not that its a bad game or anything I just don't think jumpscares make it perfect in horror.
  • I'm with #17, keeping an eye on this one. Looks very promising and i like that its a horror game that takes place underwater.
  • @18 It's not just jumpscares, most of the game is running and hiding, the tension is what makes the game so good. You never know what's gonna happen, you can easily get trapped in the dark without the camera and you need to be extremely careful not to alert the enemies or be ready to run away. Everything past that is a bad copy
