Sony’s PlayStation 4 Unveiling, Our Impressions From New York
Sony’s PlayStation 4 Unveiling, Our Impressions From New York

Sat waiting in the packed out room at the Manhattan Centre in New York, a mix of emotions washed over us. On the one hand, we were sat in anticipation waiting for the first console announcement of the new generation. After Sunday's Bungie and Destiny "unveiling," Sony had been handed a lifeline, a lifeline that said, "whatever you do, it'll be better than Bungie's unveiling." It was.

It's wasn't without its own pressures though, as being first out the blocks with the next generation announcement means Sony is effectively setting the benchmark.

The other emotion was excitement. Having only come into the console media market this generation, this was officially our first experience of this whole next generation phenomenon. Boy, we've come a long way as a network in 7 years and that hit home pretty hard.

Fast forward two hours and those emotions were replaced by relief. Relief that the console had finally been unveiled, offering a glimpse of the new Sony. A Sony that 5 years ago wouldn’t have been able to put on such a show. We had admiration. Admiration that Sony, with the pressure on and backs to the wall, delivered for the most part.

Okay, so first things first, the best news, no matter how inevitable it was, it's called the PS4 and it has trophies. We have that domain so that means we'll be with you for another generation... not that we wouldn't have been anyway, but this makes things easier in terms of redirects and what not

Now onto the meat of it. Just how well did Sony perform? Well, if there was a prize for delaying the inevitable, and that's formally announcing the PlayStation 4, then they would have won, with it taking them 7 minutes by my reckoning to mention the two words in succession.

Sure, the first 10-15 minutes might have been full of marketing spiel and hyperbole, but did you expect any less? When the push came to the shove though, they started to shine.

Mark Cerny, Lead System Architect on the PS4, lead the charge, throwing spec after spec to the onlookers in the theatre. The X86 CPU, 8 GB unified memory, and detailed information on the graphics card might well have baffled any non tech savvy person in the audience or at home, but the short and narrow of it is that the PlayStation 4 is one hell of a powerful machine.

One of the key messages that Sony conveyed perfectly through its presentation was that the PlayStation is no longer a bitch to develop for, calling it a console created by developers, for developers. This is something that Microsoft has had over Sony for the entirety of this current generation and Sony referring to the PS4 as a "supercharged PC" must come across as a delight for developers.

Then came the controller, effectively confirming every rumour that spilled out on to the internet last week, from the touch screen and the headphone jack to the ‘Share’ button. Those rumours failed to convey the extent to which Sony had put on social networking with the PS4 though. You know, the fact that you can not only share gameplay and watch someone else play on their console, but that you can remotely control their game should they wish you to.

David Perry, CEO of Gaikai, was next on the stage talking about the new evolution of the PS Store and such, with highlights that included instant try-before-you-buy, a partnership with Facebook, and more impressively, the integration of Ustream, and of course, remote play via the Vita. The bombshell that the PS4 wouldn't be backwards compatible is likely to sting Sony fans, but Sony said they are looking to get around that via the cloud. Damage control, yes. Will you likely have to play for titles again to play them on your PS4, you can bet your bottom dollar you will! It’s the price that gamers have to pay for the new architecture of the PS4.

The PlayStation 4 is about instant access and the announcement that the PS4 will have instant play for digital downloads, and have instant suspend and resume with the power button will come as a delight for a generation of gamers who want content quicker.

Sony can talk about the core tenets as much as they like (you know, the whole Simple, Immediate, Personalisation, Integrated, Social thing... or as I like to call it, I PISS), but a console is judged on its games and so Sony had to put its money where its mouth is.

Leading the way was surely Killzone: Shadow Fall, whose live demo wowed onlookers. If this is the future of visuals, then fuck me sideways! That explosion! The morphing weapons! The textures, lighting, particle effects, animations, visual fidelity, it was all rather mind blowing... even on a 100" projector screen (that's a guess at its size, by the way).

Game announcements included Sucker Punch's latest inFAMOUS title, Cerny's Knack, which was clearly used as a tech demo of sorts as it wasn’t incredibly mind-blowing, Evolution's Driveclub and an announcement likely to anger entitled PC fans, that Diablo 3 was coming to the PS3 and PS4.

The photo realistic was balanced out with Jonathan Blow's The Witness, although that was an interesting choice for Sony as it hardly packed a punch; the playful and mind-boggling tech demo from Media Molecule – basically to remind us that Move was still a big part of Sony’s long-term plans – was balanced out with the hyper realistic tech demo from Quantic Dreams’ David Cage... that face... wow. Just, wow.

Everything seemed to be paced excellently – as long as you weren’t expecting too much from the console’s announcement – and Sony covered both ends of the spectrum throughout. Guest appearances from Capcom – with their new IP, Deep Down (working title) – and Square, both showing off their new engines, was another win for Sony and its system, as was showing off more of the wave-making Watch Dogs. That Final Fantasy “announcement” though… yeah, we don’t know what that was about. The one true disappointment of the unveiling.

How much of it was cinematics as opposed to in-game footage remains to be seen, so forgive us for being slightly sceptical at this stage - it's in our nature, especially after the Killzone 2 incident from the PS3 era. The fact that Guerrilla uploaded a gameplay video direct to Facebook from the in-game menu though keeps our hopes high.

In all though, Sony don't really have the greatest track record when it comes to conferences, but one thing is for sure after last night, they picked a perfect time to bring their A game. Their PS4 unveiling had swagger, showed the world the system's innovations, wowed people with its visual prowess and they even silenced the critics by revealing the system specs. Sure, we didn't get to see a the unit itself and some of the games were hardly innovative or original, but now we know what's under the hood and what it's capable of, and that’s a good start.

Honestly, I'm not sure anyone was expecting that much of an in-depth look with a solid stable of games and tech demos to back it up, one not bogged down with pointless stats and bumph either, so the platform holder has delivered. More importantly, Sony have laid impressive foundations with their unveiling, and now they have the next 8 months to kick on, drive it home and really impress us.

Your move, Microsoft, the bar has been set... and it's pretty damn high too!

You can read all of our news coverage from the PlayStation 4 announcement here, and check out all of the screens and vids here. We were also snapping pics from the event itself, all of which you can see here.

Forget Social Networking. Why not ask the people what they REALLY want in a game system.
I'll be sooooo glad when this social fad dies!!!!
Would have been nice if I seen more pictures, too!

Nice summary. I am surprised that anyone at all would except native backwards compatibility with PS3 titles. Gaikai is a nice solution to that problem. If you can play PS3/PS4 titles from the Vita anywhere you have wifi... well that's something special.

Looks very promising - I'm sure there will be over 20+ titles eventually upon release. I'll get it eventually all depends on the games - I didn't see anything I really would want PS4 for yet, but that will most likely change soon. The Killzone demo looked amazing... All the new features - like being able to play a partial downloaded game(while it finishes downloading) and shut off console from controller and being to start it up in game, where you left off (sounds sweet). I'm sure a lot more games will pop out over the next 8 months, it will be very cool.

Also, especially after the Aliens: Colonial Marines incident from just last week. After that, I'm more than slightly skeptical. Hell, I can't believe they didn't edit out Randy Pitchford from their "3rd parties talking about how they love our new system" video. I sure as fuck would have if I was them, nobody in gaming trusts him right now and it only served as a huge reminder not to trust anything we were seeing during the conference as actual gameplay like they claimed it to be.

And as a side note, I had to take that entire 3rd parties love us video skeptically as well. Nintendo had one of those for the Wii U last year, and we've all seen how much that was actually worth when it came time for 3rd parties to put out games on Wii U.

(If you live under a rock and thus haven't seen how much it was actually worth, here's a hint: http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_9VGZjBQHr0s/SPZJ4cvYIXI/AAAAAAAACOA/F7_BBlBg9K4/s400/knowjackschitt-preview.jpg)

#6 Comparing Sony to Nintendo on the 3rd party support is a little bit of a stretch. Nintendo is notorious for not playing well with others, while that has never been the case for Sony (outside of the hardware of the PS3 being difficult to program for)

#5 Randy Pitchford is responsible for Borderlands and Borderlands 2, two of the best games of this generation. While he did fuck up with A:CM, it is a little bit of a knee-jerk reaction to suggest Sony would refuse working with him from now on. Every reporter that I read who was there stated someone was on stage playing each game (including Watch Dogs).

#1 What social fad? Professional e-gamers and gaming journalists are going to love the Share feature. And if I have friends who need help with a game, I can just connect to their game and help out, how is that a bad thing? I am pretty sure that you will be able to turn those features off if you want to be a recluse, but don't make statements that every person on the planet agrees with you, because I sure as hell don't.

Anyone remember how they promised Playstation 3 was suppose to be a computer? Then they ripped it out of the firmware and now it doesn't do any of that. Also if this ain't backwards compatible then I will just stick with my PS3 for as long as it will survive. Im not one who will be sucked in by these new gen systems. Also this may seem all great graphics and blah blah but in a couple of years it will have fallen behind again. TO:SONY BUILD US A RELIABLE NEXT GEN SYSTEM THAT HAS RELIABILITY IN THE YEARS IT WILL LAST AND KEEP THE FUCKING HEAT OUT OF IT AND STAY COOL!!!!

Like SpeedDemonTJ91, I'll be sticking with my PS3 and 360. The inability to play used retail games on the PS4 and XBOX 720 will keep me stuck in the 7th generation of console gaming. I'll be getting the Wii U before I get the PS4 OR the 720. Backwards Compatibility and the ability to play used retail games are what separated console gaming from PC gaming in the first place. If Microsoft and Sony want to do away with it, you're better off buying a controller for your PC and switching to Steam. Because it's just another form of DRM, it's the same monster, and if you're going to support this on consoles, then you might as well support it on PC. If I bought this console, and my friend bought this console, we wouldn't be able to share discs with each other, they wouldn't work on each other's consoles. We'd have to visit each other and play them on the console that the game discs were linked to. That's right, there's some kind of disc-to-system linking that prevents used games from working on your console if it was already owned/played on someone else's console.

Yeah there's Gaikai, but who wants to pay for a streamed game? I'd much rather use a disc. You know, actually pay for something that I can touch or hold? While paying for raw data is becoming more common, think about how it's used elsewhere. Like in free Korean MMORPGs or Gaia Online. If the service ever gets cut off, or god forbid you have to go offline, you won't be able to play these games. You might as well be paying for the air you breathe with this logic.

So much can go wrong with raw data, could get corrupt, or servers can go offline. The worst that ever happens to a disc is that it gets scratched over time. If you actually take care of your shit, then you won't ever have this problem.

@7: Good job missing both of my points. I never said Sony shouldn't work with Gearbox, I said they should have edited Randy Pitchford out of their video in light of the very recent Aliens scandal. His presence there does nothing to remind everyone that there's a huge difference between marketing and the games you'll actually get to play. This was also the point I was making regarding the Wii U 3rd party support video, not that Sony and Nintendo's 3rd party support is comparable. There's no reason to trust that any of these third party games are going to be completed or any reason to believe that they will be PS4 exclusive.

The point is not to believe the marketing hype, wait until the games are out and we see what they're actually like.

Also in your regards to you utterly stupid comment to that other guy that not wanting constant social media interruptions in games is a bad thing (you're going to call him a hermit [look up what recluse means] just because he wants to play his games in peace? yes, not wanting social media in games means he hates all forms of social interaction and spends every waking minute in a basement, good job idiot), I'm just going to leave this here even though you're probably too dumb to figure out how to make it play: http://www.escapistmagazine.com/videos/view/jimquisition/6718-Only-The-Lonely

@9: Sony has confirmed that they aren't blocking used games on PS4. As for Microsoft, no statement has been given to either confirm or deny that Xbox 3 will block used games. Stop accepting every single rumor you hear to be fact.

I dont get some people... What is there to be so sceptical about with PS4?

Ignore the marketing, like it never happened...

Now, with a clear mind, read 8-f'ing-gb of DDR5(!) RAM, not DDR3 as is proposed for xBox, DDR5 ram is much faster than DDR3, and an absolute meat axe of a CPU, the PS4 will be capable of some insane, mind bendingly good graphics.

Back with the PS3, sure, there was every reason to be sceptical that a machine with just 512mb of combined system and graphics RAM would deliver such impressive graphics in real-time.

There is no reason to doubt this new machine however. I've preordered mine already, I'll be playing watch dogs and killzone shadow fall on day 1, and it'll be incomprehensably good, ill tell you doubters all about it. Can't wait for my PS4!!

Also, PLEASE lock games to 1 console!! This way my friends wouldn't be borrowing all my games for 9 months at a time :P. ....but I seriously doubt it.

I am hating no backwards compatibility though, but that's the price we'll have to pay to FINALLY Have a legitimately powerful console even by today's PC standards..

But will it be "out dated" within a year though? Sure, haters, say what you must.

The reality however, is that not only are gamers in for a treat with this new generation of powerful home consoles, but there's never been a more attractive time to be a dev for consoles. During the ps3/360 era, it was a catch 22. Work on consoles, have access to a massive consumer base & high volume of sales but have to compromise on innovation, OR, work on PC and explore all the innovations you please, no limitations, But make less money and ship less units... This is the reality of it, much as all the PC people hate me right now, consoles simply shift more games than PC and make more money.

For the first time, devs can have access to these great new platforms where they literally get the best of both worlds, gone will be all the compromises on innovation, all the technical limitations and other setbacks, But, they get the massive customer base and much higher volume of games sold. Also, PC gamers won't be forced to suffer below par technology because of obsolete ps3/360's bringing the quality of PC ports down, WIN/WIN.

For the first time, I think that this new generation of consoles will be the most attractive platform for devs to work on, and again for the first time, there will be virtually nothing separating xBox, PS4 & PC... but sure, eventually the potential of PC's will start to edge forwards, absolutely (I don't mean in what's *possible* technically, that's now already happened before next gen even landed - but edge forwards in what's affordable and practical for the average gamer).

Remember that although something better will always be possible on PC, at what cost? What percentage of gamers will have access to ultra powerful pc's? Devs will always cater to the average, the area in the middle that represents the vast majority of what gamers are using, so to argue "what's the point of PS4 when it'll be outdated by PC soon", is not a valid argument.

Honestly, besides the greaphics nad the social features i probably i won't use, i don't see what i'll get from the PS4 i wouldn't get from the PS3... New titles sure but feels more of a continuation specially if you take into account most of Gaikai's stuff is not implemented, it will be sometime but not right now and it certainly won't bet to anyone.

Am I excited? Yes, but is anyone else worried that they didn't show a console? It makes me feel like they are rushing the whole thing just to be the first ones out and it could mean many problems with the first shipment. It will be a first for me not to rush out and purchase the new PS4 on day one, but on this one it feels right.

I think they are leaving many things open to have a chance to improve over what Microsoft offers. Which I think is smart to do. Well maybe some of them because they are not ready yet, but still :)

at first, I was skeptical about PS4 and more to the point I thought to myself that I wasn't ready to move on but the more I hear and see about it, the more I'm looking forward to it. The only thing I'm not looking forward to is day one price and if it's anything like 360/PS3, I won't be getting day one.

i have made my decision on if i wish to purchase this console... NO because its making it out to be something that is not. example would be with the ps3 it was supposed to be an amazing console with better graphics but the original one was a big block that would get hot and all the bluray does is takes longer to load the discs for same quality as what the xbox does, i have both consoles and compared with the same games, i might get one but not the first gen ill wait like i should have with the playstation 3

Day one purchase for me!! Regardless of the price I would pay upto £600 no problem as long as it has a big hard drive, personally I don't give a shit about the social stuff like Facebook and the share button, I doubt I'll ever use it. It's all about the step up in games for me, the step up in graphics, it's also a chance for new ip's to get there foot on the ladder. From this generation of consoles I want games to be bigger and last longer, and I want battlefield to have more than a crummy 24 players online!! Dice have made some massive maps and 12 on a team is just no where near enough! And less of all this digital purchase bull! I want to buy my games on disc, I actually like drivin up to Asda to buy the latest game! It adds a bit more excitment to the whole process. I want it in my hand!

I'm thinking that being able to have more connectivity between games is the future of gaming. In other words, I'm suggesting that third-party developers create ways to connect gamers across all platforms; UbiSoft and Rockstar can make server hosted friends lists and connect players between Nintendo, Sony and Microsoft platforms.

This segregation among the gaming community does more harm than good, in my opinion. That's mainly because playing on certain platforms restricts the player base that one would generally encounter when playing online. The general populace of Xbox Live? Full of prepubescent morons gloating over "skills" in FPS games. The PlayStation Network? Elitists who generally flee at the first sign of trouble and trolls who make it their sole purpose to make things harder for you. As for the Nintendo Network on the Wii U that I've tried out recently? Well, they had only just gotten their first taste of what we have access to generally and they're catching up - slowly but surely.

Many people are in an economic pinch because of the job market and resale value of current-gen systems is sorely being undercut because of GameStop just buying it at the lowest price they can and reselling it "refurbished" for thrice what you paid for. eBay and Craigslist are hardly reliable too, since more often than not people flake out on their payments. It'd be more economically friendly for friends and family who want to play together not to have to buy another console just to play the same game together.

Now remember, I didn't say anything about first-party games being shared across platforms. Halo, Gears of War, inFamous, God of War, The Legend of Zelda, Fire Emblem - those titles will always stay with their respective companies. What I'm insisting is that third-party companies like Ubisoft, Rockstar, Harmonix, EA, Activision, and Valve should establish some sort of cross-platform connectivity by a server hosted friends list. We've already seen this as a possibility by connecting PS3 users on Counter Strike: Global Offensive, to those using Steam on a PC - same case applies to Portal 2.

My brother and I are already saving up for a PS4 since we already have a Wii U and we were also planning on getting Watch_Dogs and Assassin's Creed IV for both. Do we really have to buy two of the same system just to play what is essentially the same game together? This isn't a matter of console superiority, it's all about connectivity and setting this next generation of consoles apart from the ones that came before it. This console war nonsense has gone on for almost a decade and it's gotten redundant and boring.

I could just be talking to myself, but good God I hope not...

I personal i'm not buying ps 4 for the fact there is no compatibility with ps 3 games there are tons of excellent games and there's probably no transfer option meaning you probably can't access your old account and use the stuff you have on there. I don't know about anyone else but I sure as hell don't want to buy games and dlc that I already bought on p 3 and have to spent another 5 to 60 dollars. I just wish that we as a gaming community would come together and ask sony for a better ps 3 a ps3 version 2.0 I discussed this with a couple of my online pals and they pretty much agree. 1st fix the fat of ps3 2nd make sure that the inside doesn't collect much dust and it should have a long life and no yellow light of death. doubt that gonna happen
