5 Things You Should Know About Call of Duty: Black Ops II Multiplayer

5 Things You Should Know About Call of Duty: Black Ops II Multiplayer

Another year and another obligatory Call of Duty sequel is readying up to hits the shelves this November. But where past instalments have largely been content to adopt the 'if ain't broke, don't fix it' mantra, Treyarch's latest stab at the franchise – and the studio's first direct sequel – is having a go at shaking things up a bit.

There might not be particularly sweeping or game-changing innovations in Black Ops II, but there's enough new stuff coming to make us genuinely sit up and take notice for once. So popular and established is Call of Duty's multiplayer that making any kind of change presents something of a risk, but Treyarch is having a go anyway.

We covered a lot of ground in our Gamescom preview, but we thought we'd go into some additional detail to make sure you're down with the kids. Or something like that. So without further ado, here are five things you should know about Call of Duty: Black Ops II multiplayer.

1. It's Got a Funky New 'Pick 10' Create A Class System – On paper, it might not sound like a particularly significant change, but presenting you with a grid comprised of ten spaces for your own bespoke loadouts is actually a clear and concise way of creating your own classes. If you're lazy, there's still the preset sniper, heavy, assault and recon classes et al, but building your own loadout is a snap. Everything is laid out in a pleasing illustrated style and constructed in such a way that you're always propelled forward through the menus, rather than having to fiddle with greyed-out options or forced to backtrack.

There are dozens of primary weapons, secondary weapons, tactical gadgets, lethal gadgets, perks and attachments to choose from, with Wildcards thrown in to mix things up a bit and three slots for you to assign them to. Choose a 'Greed' Wildcard and you can select an extra perk, while other Wildcards give you an extra weapon attachment or an extra lethal or tactical gadget. 'Pick 10' suggests that there are limits imposed on Create A Class, but the reality is a wealth of options and possible combinations to experiment with as you strive to assemble that elusive perfect loadout. It's a relatively minor new feature, but just one example of Black Ops II pushing the boat out just a little bit.

You can still only take two guns of course, but you can take only a primary weapon if you'd prefer. There's loads of scope for honing your ideal combo of weapons and items. There's 100 items to unlock too, with a new one to choose from with each of the 55 levels you achieve, meaning you'll be wanting to Prestige over and over to get everything. You'll find ten levels of Prestige to boot. Phew.

2. Kill Streaks Are Dead. Long Live Score Streaks!  – Traditionally in Call of Duty to reap the benefits of helpful support items like care packages, helicopter gunships, the AC-40 or whatever, you'd have to be some sort of online first-person shooter demigod (or a big fat cheater), but in Black Ops II Kill Streaks are out and Score Streaks are in. What does that mean? It means that it's more 'come one, come all' rather than, 'here comes the fella with the biggest gun and the best perks shooting everyone in the face'. You're rewarded for a variety of actions rather than merely killing the opposition, so having the best K/D ratio isn't necessarily a surefire route to accessing all of the best shit.

Score Streaks mean that you get points for capturing a flag, taking over a hardpoint (in the king of the hill-esque HardPoint mode), fulfilling support roles, setting up a sabotage with a Shock Charge or completing any objective for that matter. It's a nice way of embracing players of all skill levels, and with a new matchmaking system that pits you against players of a similar skill, based on placing in matches, wins, rank and other factors, this is a CoD game for almost everyone. Even we managed to get our hands on a Hellstorm missile and an RC explosive car, which is really saying something. “Rewarding desirable gameplay,” is what it's all about, according to Game Design Director, David Vonderhaar. You can also earn a bunch of repeatable medals too “for doing cool stuff”, which is always nice, right?

3. It's Got Tons of New Gadgets - With its futuristic year 2025 setting, the floodgates are open for all manner of near future tech, and Black Ops II's arsenal is full to bursting with more gadgets than James Bond's underpants. Shock Charges can be carried alongside your frag grenades or semtex charges to stun enemies and temporarily impair their vision, while accessing Score Streak rewards enable you to deploy an Escort Drone to help shoot down some rivals, drop a controllable AGR bristling with miniguns and missiles onto the battlefield, fly around a controllable quad-rotor Dragonfire drone (both can be let under AI control if you prefer) or call in a Hellstorm missile airstrike.

Other Score Streaks (you can pick three separate from your 'Pick 10' out of more than 20) include the unmanned Guardian turret that can cook your foes with its wall of intense heat, a care package with a random item inside (like a military Kinder egg), an explosive RC car and more besides. You can also take a big old riot shield that you can plant into the ground (a la Gears of War 2&3) out with you (at the expense of one of your Pick 10 slots) and if you're smart with your chosen weapon attachments, there's a range of different gadgets you can take advantage of. Take the Millimeter Scanner for example that picks out stationary enemy heat signatures behind walls and through smoke grenades, or the laser sight, or the underslung grenade launcher and so on... There's loads of gadgets! Loads! And tomahawks.

4. It's Got That New e-Sports League Play Thing – These days, e-Sports is all the rage, apparently. To capitalise on this, Call of Duty: Black Ops II will ship with its very own facility that allows you to broadcast (correction: CODCast) all of your multiplayer exploits with an array of features to support it all. The aim is to make competition fun at any level, with several tiers available for players of all types. With CODCasting, all you'll need is some robust upstream bandwidth, an optional webcam, and that's it.

As far as features straight out of the box go, League Play and the ability to CODCast is pretty damn substantial, unlocking masses of potential with always-on broadcasting, live streaming for matches, overhead mini-maps for tracking the action, nameplates (likened to sports jerseys by Vonderhaar), the ability to listen in to player chat (keep it clean!), a score panel keeping track of the action and commentary. We're a little fuzzy on the intricate details, but it all sounds awfully exciting for CoD fans and anyone curious about entering the e-Sports scene. And it's all included with Black Ops II, fully formed and ready to go.

5. There's New Modes and Zombies is Back  – While some modes, like Wager Matches and thus the in-game 'COD points' currency have been excised from Black Ops II, there's a handful of new game-types making their debut in Treyarch's latest crack at CoD. While there's the new Strike Force mode tying in with the single-player narrative portion of the game, multiplayer sees multi-team deathmatches for up to six teams playing as either the SEALS, SDC, FBI, Mercs, ISA or Militia, and the aforementioned king of the hill-style HardPoint mode. Granted they're modes that have been in countless first-person shooters before, but here their execution promises to be unparalleled. Based on what we've played so far anyway.

Black Ops II's Zombies mode has yet to be properly revealed - although it has been confirmed - at time of writing with only the artwork above offering any sort of clue as to what to expect. Not a whole lot is known about Zombies in Black Ops II and anything beyond the fact that it'll feature zombies is being kept under wraps for the time being, other than Treyarch's Director of Communications, John Rafacz telling us that it'll be “the biggest zombie experience [you've] ever seen”. We happen to know that the first details on Zombies for Black Ops II are set to drop very soon though, so be sure to keep your eyes peeled. As Rafacz also revealed to us, Zombies will use Black Ops II's multiplayer engine, which will help to provide a “dynamic experience”. And that sounds good to us.

Call of Duty: Black Ops II will be launching on November 13th, 2012. Bring. It. On.

@1: Let us see.

Someone bashing CoD just because it's popular and probably hasn't even played it.

That sounds about accurate.

Having the history behind CoD since the early CoD 4 days, I can say that this franchise won't die away anytime soon. As people have stated before, the game is essentially the same shit in a different soup every year BUT so are the other multiplayers.

Why does Call of Duty make new record sales every year? - Because it introduces many new gamers to the genre of FPS every year, most of them being youngsters of the age 8-16 years.

As a Veteran CoD gamer, I have to unfortunately state, that I won't be buying this game, just because the concept has got boring for me. The games are good and offer the best FPS service in the market but that aside, Activision don't have the balls to introduce new innovation and that my dear trophy hunters keeps this veteran out of this excellent franchise for good.

@2 - Wrong, I have played them all up to this point, but I have decide I don't want to be a zombie any longer. I don't bash hardly anything, but this will be just like the rest, currently boring.

@5 - Haha, your cute! You failed to see my smile, which makes everything okay.

Further more, if you actually believe it will be different, your even cuter than I previously mentioned :)

So i think I missed this info: Is the playercard system like in Black Ops where you can create your own emblem, or like in MW?

Also, this article states that in Multi-TDM there are 6 different teams competing against each other. How many players will be on each team, anybody know yet?

@13 Yes, you will be able to design your own emblem and the multi-team game mode will support up to 18 players, so if there are 6 teams there will be 3 but this can vary depending on how many teams e.g. could be 4 teams of 4

Treyarch is owned by Activision. Treyarch is just an indepedent game company that includes several members of Activision.

Please get your facts straight before you say stupid things.

Looks good but I think I'm gonna pass. I'm just not motivated to play another shooter game again... I believe Treyarch can make something other than COD. Branch off a bit for 2 years and make something other than shooters... So many shooters games, it's just getting boring.

@1 I lol'd so hard. It's a sequel bro, isn't it supposed to be very similar? How much different can FPS games really get? Im not a huge fan of Call of Duty but I think people who say "All Call of Duty games are the same" are idiots because of course they are going to be very alike. They are all CALL OF DUTY games. So if you dont like CALL OF DUTY then stop commenting about it and stop playing it.

I like that they have turned around and are focusing on objective points instead of the K/D ratio. I see they took notes from Battlefield. This makes a better multiplayer experience.

I dont understand the hype about the 'new' score streak system, it was already there in MW3. You can get a drone for capturing 3 flags in Domination without ever killing anyone, isnt that a scorestreak?? If you think I'm wrong, setup a private match, get yourself the drone in your streak menu and the perk where you need one less kill to earn a streak, start the game and capture 2 flags.
Or am I missing something?

@42 That's exactly what i was thinking... maybe they are really going overboard with it though (which could be good and/or bad). But it seems only a 'limited edition' of score-streaks were used in MW3.

#3 i completely agree with you it does help people begin their journey into the FPS genre, i always said that as well, for me i use to play COD 4 and Modern Warfare 2. But i grew bored of it, because i was getting use to the FPS style.

My only problem is though, i hope more people who play Call Of Duty, branch out into other games to, and not just FPS games. That is my only worry, is that it will create a comfort zone to not try new games that are different or creative.

I personally think that this has happened already. There's a ton of gamers out there only playing newest COD and nothing else. They say how they hate the game and never will play it again but 2 hours later they are back at it. For some reason majority of online gamers feel that SP sucks balls when in reality they just have become too attached to one stupid donkey-ass over hyped pile of shit.

44; guess we'll have to wait and see what is really new. Just attempting to capture a flag for example seems to give you points, so that would be new. What is bizarre, I have been playing for a year now with the same people from my clan and nobody ever noticed that 'killstreaks' also appear when capturing a flag.

Why does everyone hate on CoD? If you don't like it, then don't bother reading about it. Black Ops 2 is nothing like the previous games. This is in the future. The storyline isn't linear anymore so that the story can progress in different directions.

Haters, go hang yourselves and let us beautiful people play the game.

"This is the future" how can you say that from a few screen shots? the only difference is that its set in the future because theyve bled the past and present to death!
All you COD heads need to take a look outside your bubble and realise that there are other much better games out there!

Funny, new CoD game on the way and all my friends start bitchin bout it. And then they end up playing it anyways. Getting redundant

But seriously, so many I know hate on this for just being SSDD, but they play Dynasty Warriors, like I myself do. And if that ain't the SSDD too I don't know what is.
Games have always been like this, they make a core shell, they expand on that shell. How different is WipEout HD from the original WipEout, bit faster, better graphics, new maps, 2 new weapons...90% of all game series is like this

I kinda got tired of FPS's 12-13 years ago, but I still like to grab at the occasional one and I follow what's going on within the genre, but if I ain't got nuthing useful to say about them I STFU, if they impress me I might make a shout out about it

That said, I tried 2 CoD's, and they are far from being the worst FPS's I've played, actually a very enjoyable (but easy) campaign, though I don't care much for the rest of it

Same engine, worse maps, probably. I probably won't get this COD because I think it looks worse than the last black ops (which I actually enjoyed. But after buying MW3, my faith in COD has been destroyed. The maps were the worst I've ever seen. They were pretty much a maze, the layout and design was awful.

Score streaks? Wasn't that concept introduced in Homefront's battlepoint system?

I wish THQ hadn't fired all of KAOS Studios when Homefront was released. If they could have properly supported Homefront, it would seriously be an amazing game.

@51 since when is 13 years later considered the future? The only reason the time frame matters is the technology and that doesn't change much in 13 years.

#1 - Tiny maps
#2 - Annoying kids in 95% of games
#3 - People calling you hacker when you play good.
#4 - Rage quitters when they are losing.
#5 - The only good thing would be the zombies mode.

Another November, another COD release. And with it comes the tide of haters who bitch and moan about it being 'the same ol' lame ol'. But the fact of the matter is most, if not all, will end up buying it (if they don't already have it on pre-order). Surely that must be so. How else do you account for the fact that it's not just one of the highest selling titles in any form of media period, but these haters are taking the time to seek out a specialized forum on the web and ooze over with disgust about it. They obviously give a shit about it enough to come and post about it (and on a website dedicated to videogame trophies, no less. WTF??) so why would they care enough? Likely because they have something invested in it. And what else could that be other than their money? But who made them spend that money? They did. So, haters, either go get your money back and find a fresh, exciting, bold, new franchise to get behind, or accept it for what it is and get the damn most enjoyment out of it you can.

Thanks for playing.

Call of Duty is to gaming what James Bond is to movies. Very predictable with rarely anything new being introduced but it's a solid romp and as with the Bond movies I'm never all that bothered or excited by the prospect of a new one but I inevitably end up going to the cinema to see it, partly because all my friends do, hence the similarity. I don't get sucked in by COD anymore like I did with COD4 or MW2 but I usually end up giving in and at least giving it a go and to be fair at least they include a lot of content compared to many other games these days and I always have a bit of fun no matter how short lived it may be compared to the good old days of COD when it was fresh and exciting.
It's like Ronseal "Call of Duty - it does exactly what it says on the tin."

@56 I agree, Homefront didn't do very well due to the poor presentation but under the rough exterior was actually a very good system. The scoring, perks etc etc were very well thought out and it made an otherwise poorly executed game actually pretty damn good in my opinion. I always thought if the perks system from Homefront could be mixed with the match structure and scope of Battlefield plus the smooth game play and controls from COD then you would have a perfect Online FPS!

@68 That is the truth. If people don't like something, they should just stay away from the game. Not continually bash others over the head with their opinions of hate for it. Plus, this game was technically 2 years in the making, considering the fact that MW3 was made by a different company even though the publishers are the same.

It's funny how many COD fanboys are talking about how great Black Ops II is, especially knowing that by New Year's Day half of them are going to be talking about how much it sucks. What's it going to take to get you fanboys to understand? It's so annoying to hear people talking about how great Black Ops II is and how it's the best COD ever, when by this time next year they're going to be talking about how much Black Ops II sucks and are going to be talking about how great Modern Warfare 4 is.
