As stated above, I don't get into mobile games at all. I'd rather read a book on my Kindle than play a game on my phone...but if there's a console around I'm on it. Like it says in the article, the consoles are the only thing you need in your entertainment center anymore, because they do everything from streaming movies to displaying pics as well as allowing us gamers to play the latest cutting edge graphics created in a video game. If gaming shifts to where it's mainly only mobile, us die-hard controller fans will likely find a new, likely less fulfilling pass time. |

Mobile gaming certainly has its uses but can NEVER replace a console. I play Tetris or mixi games on the bus or the train on the way to or from work. They're quick, not overly involved and can be turned off in an instant if necessary. Skyrim, Heavy Rain, Halo...you need a big screen, a controller and a good chunk of time to truly enjoy the experience. You need a compelling story and more complex controls. There's no way to do that on an iPhone. The generation when consoles become obsolete is the generation I become a retro gamer. |

| Great article, I pretty much agree with all of it. Is physical media really dying though? Yes I download games such as dead nation and back to the future, but I would much prefer to have my game on disc, no problem of limited number of downloads if your hard drive blows up etc. You can't sell a downloaded game on (although they are currently thinking about anti used discs technology). I also agree with the piece about upgrading TV's, I've currently got my PS3 hooked up to a 20" square screen cathode ray tube TV with inbuilt VHS player in many games my peripheral vision is missing and I easily get flanked but I'm quite happy with what I've got! |

A really good article and read but in my opinion i don't think that the mobile and cloud/streaming/digital or whatever is called going to replace consoles and retail games but one particular reason (that by the way i say it all the time and i know you guys are tired in hear this, but i repeat it anyway!): "Availability" A lot of people (same with the companies), think that this is not a big issue, not a minimun problem to the people who "cann't access to the digital store" because is not available in their country/region... But trust me, is a big problem for us!, maybe a lot of you people don't know the feeling of this problem but is very frustrating let me explain in this way: Anybody remember the PSP GO?, the PSP model that is was "digital only", remember that was failure?, well one of the funny reasons that was a failure at least in my country is because the console had a lot of features except one thing: "We cann't have access to the PS Store because the services wasn't available in our country", so... what we talking about?, really that was the future of gaming?, with the retail games was easy..., go to the store, buy the game, done it but in digital ehhhh..., where i buy it? (and too bad Sony didn't learn the lesson and the Vita follow the same steps...) Also another bad thing with the digital games (only retail games), is a problem in general that all we know: "The digital retail game has the same price of the retail game!", ok what that heck!?, the retail game is expensive because has box, cover art, disc and manual but the digital is well... digital, also for get the game digital i need internet and a HDD (extra cost), it should be more ehhhh... cheap!?. |

The biggest threat to consoles is the game developers/publishers themselves. With the push towards digital only, the continued war against used games and the influx of microtransactions to bleed their customer base, the developers may shoot themselves in the foot. This industry has imploded before, and failing to listen to the core base of customers will risk this again. |

I've said thisn to most of my friends and they all get it. Mobile gaming has nothing to do with console gaming. The only people who have caught on to mobile gaming to such a degree are the very same casual players that played on the Wii. Has any one of these experts corrilated the fact that the Nintendo posted a loss for the first time in years recently to the rise in mobile gaming? Probably not because they don't understand the industry anywhere near as well as a lifelong hardcore gamer like myself or some of you here do. The Wii was an anamoly in gaming. It brought in casual gamers who never played games and never wanted to. It caused the industry sales figures to explode to over double their size pre-Wii and it has led to much of the industry becoming as large as it is and as publisher-driven as it has become with smaller companies ending up getting devoured in the rush. Budgets have exploded on games like Mass Effect, Amalur, and Star Wars: The Old Republic demanindg larger sales numbers. Etc etc etc. But the major point is that mobile gaming isn't taking away *ANY* of us hardcore players, the only people who ever truelly supported the industry and the consoles. The Wii is falling off now because, as I used to tell people when it first came out, it was a fad. Even Nintendo has realized this(or always knew it ;p ) what with the creation of new console aimed directly at reacquiring lost hardcore gamers. That system created false numbers by bringing in consumers who wouldn't stick around for their next product. So where are they going? The mobile gaming. It's casual gaming at its finest. Not one of us who plays Skyrim or Zelda or World of Warcraft or Metal Gear Solid will ever want to play games exclusivelly on a phone because you'll never get the same quality. These "experts" need to get their heads out of their butts. |

I don't know why people always forget about the economy...why do you think retail isn't doing so well? Why do people like to buy $10-15 digital games on the PS Store or why do mobile games do so well for selling at $0.99? Casuals prefer cheaper alternatives and like shorter, smaller games. Consoles, handheld or home, will always have a purpose as an in-between for expensive PC rigs and cheap mobile gaming. They are a gathering ground where both hardcore and casual gamers can play on the same machine. They are part of a balance that should not disappear. As for retail sales going down and digital picking up, I'd like to call BS on that, I think some statistics are being skewed to justify publishers going all digital and charging the same as a disc or to justify going into a F2P/microtransaction release style. If anything, retail is dropping because $60 is just too much to spend on every new game that releases. Overall, if consoles disappear, then it's because publishers and console developers decided to keep chasing the casual market's money stream. And it's very possible that this could happen one day. One truth is that core gaming has always existed on computers, and in the future a core gamer may end up having to go to PC just to play a quality game to escape a gaming market full of mediocre trash designed for casuals. |

Nice article, I'm quite certain the consoles have a lot in them yet, but I've always been prepared for going back to PC gaming if Virtual Reality breaks through at some point, as that will probably start out on PC's. As for mobile gaming, I've tried everything from the original gameboys, PSP's and LCD games to the android games on my phone, NinDS and so on, never liked it, actually hated it and in most cases felt it was a mockery of my beloved hobby, but the Vita pulls it off, I tried one and was sold on the spot, but it also feels like console gaming. I'll stick by the consoles, if they'll stop making them I'll just stick with the ones I have (have 7 different consoles hooked up, perpherials for them all, 1500+ games in all, will be adding Xbox to the lot soon - finally, heck as long as there'll be electricity I'm prepared for a damn holocaust) |

Consoles are going to die not because of a lack of players, but because of the idiocy of developers (or worse, companies that buy up developers). Time was, selling 500,000 games was a high-water mark. Now, if you're not selling 5,000,000, you're a failure. If some people leave consoles for mobile gaming, good riddance anyway. Maybe then, we can get some more content-heavy games rather than "Most recent anonymous 10-hour FPS/TPS with multiplayer #27." |

Great article. I have to agree with you 100% that I don't think that consoles will disappear from the market. The distribution method might change and evolve, as we have seen in this generation, but they will not be completely gone. There will still be people who want a dedicated gaming console hooked up to their TV so that they can use a controller and sit back and relax in their living room. Just look at the success of the Ouya campaign on Kickstarter. People still want consoles. |

| It's simply the standard money chasing misconception made by corporate-minded types. They see a huge chunk of money going to the sales of apps for mobile devices, mainly so folks can keep themselves amused while waiting in the dentists office or to keep the kids entertained while driving to grammy's. Yeah I can see in ten or twenty years there may be devices and a network infrastucture to create a universal, on-demand, portable medium (movies, games, tv, communication) to a standard on par with physical "hard-wired" devices. But for now it's all just experimentation and speculation. Besides I enjoy being "disconnected" from time to time... lowers the light bill too. |

While I admire the passion displayed, I see nothing in this article to convince me that consoles are here for the long run. This is little more than random speculation, and appeal to the past, which is always dangerous when dealing with technology. Ask companies like Kodak what happens when you simply rely on your market saturation in the face of new technology. Heck, ask Sony about their troubles with televisions (which often sell for less than their production cost). The comments display similar passion, but at times are funny. I particularly like tmac's comment about being able to play DVDs while streaming Netflix. Delicious irony, considering that in one fell swoop, Netflix gave up its entire physical catalogue. I for one hope that consoles don't go the way of the dodo, but I have doubts as to their ability to survive in the face of the corporate greed that thinks that a game has to sell 5,000,000 physical copies to be deemed a success. Too many hands reaching for the same pie... |

| It is my prediction that the generation following next generation (PS4, etc.) will be a gloomy, last chance struggle at pushing things we can't afford or just don't want. The bubble will burst and we will see PC gaming becoming the dominant force. Sony will start releasing Vaio Playstations and Microsoft will make PCs with X-Box live support. Nintendo will be the only one pushing a DS console targeted at hardcore gamers. Sega will seize this oppurtunity to re-enter the console market. Rinse and repeat. |

| consoles will be around for at least another 10 years. you have to upgrade the entire internet. ps3 wanted games to all be digital, but right now they cant even handle a handfull of 7g or 15g files without them being a download error. it took me 2 months to download a 15g game because it errored everytime. not to mention ps3 download caps your speed which takes even longer to download a huge file. streaming, nah, not everyone can afford a fast speed and even the fast speed has problems. remember the internet was ment for dialup originally and weve flexed it far enough. jaffe, well we all know how good his advice is since he made twisted metal the biggest worst coded game ever that over heats your ps3, trophys dont unlock, and cant connect to the internet. cloud gaming nope, theres 4 diff systems that came out you could download the game off your tv for cheap and those blew out of existence or no one knows about them. cell phone gamers dont exist really. non gamers love apps but those are just games u play while waiting somewhere. no one sits in there house and plays a cell phone game for 8 hours a day 7 days a week like a console or pc. |

"Consoles are an attractive proposition because of their ease of use. You know that when you fire up a game on your console, it will work. Everything you need is in one place, without the need for driver updates, a new graphics card or any unnecessary fiddling." THAT IS THE REASON I AM NOT A PC GAMER! Everything has to be complicated to the max. Spend hundreds of dollars on graphic cards, extra HDD spaces, HDD transfer, etc. How about, buy the game, play it? Or better yet, have all this crap built in. -_- |

Comment #6 has it right. No matter how good the controls or graphics are on the phones, they are still just that: phones. They are made to call people. Not game like a true gamer. We all want a long night of bad food, booze/soda, and a big screen to satisfy our thirst for a true gaming experience. |

| Crytek says a lot of crazy things concerning the "Future" of gaming. Their CEO has recently stated that the future of gaming will be free to play PC games and has put his company's money where his mouth is with thier upcoming game "Warface".(stupid name) Of course "Crysis 3" will be available on PS3 in February. All this death of consoles business is stupid. The Playstation and the Xbox aren't going anywhere. Nentindo is the only company that should have concerns in my opinon. Because all of thier business is gaming related unlike thier competitors. They have the potential to go out like Sega if this Wii U thing doesn't work out. But, that's the only core gaming company that I think has any prospect of failure. Sony and Microsoft should grace us with great games and the consoles to play them on for at least the forseeable future. |

They're simply two different business models. As with what #6 said, mobile games are not heavily involved. Quick and fast. That's their design. The best selling games on iOS are that way. For exactly the reason he stated. Sitting on the bus or train, need something to kill time. When you arrive, you can quickly cut off. Any iOS game development book I've read has stated this exact same thing. Consoles are for the more involved. A 60+ hour RPG, I'd rather have on a console. For one, charging my iPhone 4 times a day because it's dead is not appealing. Getting a phone call while playing is also annoying. Consoles have their place. Mobile gaming has theirs. Bottom line. The business models for both are different. One will not replace the other. Note: I mention iOS/iPhone only because it's what I have and what I'm familiar with. Not to put down the Android or anything. |

| If consoles do not have a disk drive I'm seriously not playing games anymore. I like having a physical copy if I'm paying good money for it AND so I don't have to spend more of said good money when something happens to my hard drive. Like video games are not over priced as it is, its bologna. |
