Road Map

Way of the Samurai 3''s trophy set requires patience. Some time can be saved by using an exploit or two, but you're still going to be putting 120 hours into this game, with much of that time being spent doing the same thing over and over again. With that word of warning, the trophy set can be broken into five phases:

VEGETARIAN RUN: Start a new game, eat a radish and choose "Leave Amana" from the World Map. You will obtain the Vegetarian title and around 1000 Samurai Points. Repeat this process 10 times to unlock the "Samurai Leader", "Samurai Hero" and "Legendary Samurai" trophies, as well as the "Head Collector" and "Outfit Collector" trophies.

COMPLETION RUN: Consult the guides I've written listed in the Helpful Resources section below. Clear the game on each difficulty and obtain all of the Endings to unlock the "Ending", "Weak Samurai", "Skilled Samurai", "Samurai Master", "Samurai Slayer", "Five Stories", "Way of the Samurai" and "Victory" trophies. The story-related "Assassin" trophy will also be unlocked during this time, in addition to the time-related "Amana Native" trophy. If you hadn't received them previously, the "Killer" and "Blunt Attack" trophies will also be unlocked at this time, as well as "Payday", "Job Seeker" and, depending on your style of play, several others. The "Weapon Destroyer" trophy will be unlocked when you inevitably break an opponent's weapon... remember to pick this broken up and defeat an enemy with a regular attack with it for the "Zero Kill" trophy and defeat another enemy with a blunt (non-lethal) attack for the "Zero Blunt Attack" trophy. Upon visiting the Dojimas in Takatane Village or Omiki Village and having them create and upgrade a weapon, you will unlock the "Forged Weapon" and "Weapon Forger" trophies.

TITLE RUN: By this time, you've likely made it most of the way towards your goal of obtaining 20 titles. Consult the guides I've written in the Helpful Resources section below and obtain however many remain for you, making sure that you obtain "Dojo Conqueror", as fulfilling that title's requirements will also unlock the "Bushido" trophy, and, if you haven't obtained it already, "Samurai 4EvR!", as doing so unlocks the "Samurai 4EvR!" trophy. Obtaining 20 titles unlocks the "Title Collector" and "Title Master" trophies.

STANCE RUN: If you haven't already, purchase another sword safe or two from the weapons merchant at Posting Station, unlocking the "Extra Sword Safe" trophy. I recommend printing out the weapons list in the Helpful Resources section below and using it as a checklist, as you're going to have to collect all 102 of the game's swords and spears at this point. About halfway through collecting the weapons, you will have received the "Weapon Collector" and "Weapon Arsenal" trophies. If you haven't obtained it already, it's also very likely that you will obtain the "Relationship" trophy at this point. To obtain the "Bare Hands Stance Mastery", "Dual Sword Stance Mastery" and "Ninja Dual Sword Stance Mastery" trophies, visit the weapons merchant at Posting Station after Day 5 and purchase as many of the applicable scrolls as you can afford. Kill the merchant for an instant refund and consume all of the scrolls you've just purchased, then select "Leave Amana" from the World Map. Continue this process until those trophies are unlocked. For the remaining eight stance-related trophies, you will have to visit that weapons merchant, purchasing, instead, as many Basic, Advance and Special scrolls as you can afford and otherwise repeating the same routine as before. Equip a sword or spear and proceed to use Basic, Advance and Special scrolls until you master every skill for that weapon; you can find out whether or not all skills have been mastered for a weapon by looking at its Skills List. Repeat this with the remaining 101 weapons in the game to unlock all of the remaining Stance Mastery trophies, as well as the "First Time", "Skill Collector", "Master of Skills", "Weapon Master" and Weapon Specialist" trophies. Consult the "Yen and You" section below for tips on farming Yen for this process.

CLEAN-UP RUN: Unlock any remaining trophies. Consult the trophy guide for tips on completing the "Power of 10" / "Power of 100" Chain Kill trophies.

Yen And You

Having plenty of Yen is key to obtaining Way of the Samurai 3's Platinum Trophy. Here are a few helpful tips and tricks for farming Yen:
  • After joining Ouka clan, become their de facto leader by killing Genjuro. Visit Joji, the Ouka clan job broker, and tell him that you need money, demanding 1000 Yen. Return to your safe house and sleep until the following morning and return to Castle Minori to repeat the process. Multiple requests for money in a day will result in Joji leaving his post, so don't push your luck.
  • Whenever you spend a substantial amount of money, kill the merchant. They will drop any money spent during that transaction, no matter the amount. Instant refund!
  • Apologizing to the weapons merchant in Posting Station and requesting that he give you something causes him to drop the "Way of the Samurai" item, which sells for 500 Yen. This will only happen once per playthrough, but if you're passing through you may want to make a panhandling pit stop.
  • Take note of the locations of respawning items with high resale value... for instance, the Amibiki found in Castle Minori and the Shirai-tou found in The Road each sell for 300 Yen.

Clear the game on the applicable difficulty level. Trophies pertaining to clearing the game on a certain difficulty level do not stack. Purchasing items that raise your maximum HP (Buddhist Beads, Talismans and Ancient Amulets) is strongly advised, particularly to complete the game's higher difficulty levels. Additionally, by purchasing Match Scrolls from the weapons merchant in Posting Station and maxing out your "Matched Skills" list, many of your enemies attacks will be blocked automatically so long as the Auto-Parry option is set to its default "ON" setting. Those still having trouble with the higher difficulty levels are advised to choose Endings involving minimal combat. Consult the Ending Guide (Spoilers) thread for confirmed paths for obtaining the game's Endings.

Weapon Forger
Created a weapon.

The Dojimas of Takatane Village and Omiki Town will allow you to create your own weapons so long as you possess a blade, guard, grip and pommel. These items are available for purchase from the game's various merchants, and can also be found on any number of the bodies you will undoubtedly leave in your wake.

See "Ninja Stance Mastery"

Ninja Stance Mastery

You will have to collect all of the game's 102 weapons to be able to unlock the Stance Mastery trophies. Consult the Weapons List / Locations thread for a complete list of the game's weapons and the locations of some of the rarer ones. Each weapon in the game possesses unique skills, and while you can master these skills by using each weapon in combat, the slightly less time-consuming option is to purchase Basic, Advance and Special scrolls from the weapons merchant at Posting Station and use these items with the sword you want them applied to equipped. All scrolls pertaining to stance mastery are available from this merchant after Day 5. Consult the weapon's Skill List to check your progress; when all skills for a weapon have been mastered, a dialog box will appear in the upper right hand corner of the screen indicating so.

Dual Sword Stance Mastery
Mastered all skills of Dual Sword Stance.

Purchase Dual Sword Stance scrolls from the weapons merchant at Posting Station; all scrolls pertaining to stance mastery are available from this merchant after Day 5. Each of these items allows your character to master a single skill; continue purchasing and using these scrolls until the trophy unlocks.

Ninja Dual Sword Stance Mastery

Each of these items allows your character to master a single skill; continue purchasing and using these scrolls until the trophy unlocks.

When your opponent's weapon's durability is reduced to 0, it will break. This will undoubtedly happen several times on your way to getting this game's Platinum Trophy.

Blunt Attack
Defeated an opponent with a Blunt Attack.

Your weapon's non-lethal mode can be toggled with the Select button.

Amana Native
Played more than 10 hours.

Note that this trophy will not trigger until the playthrough in which you reached the 10 hour mark is over (i.e. you cleared the game, were killed or chose Leave Amana from the World Map).

Forged Weapon
Forged a weapon for the first time.

Speak with one of the Dojimas in Takatane Village or Omiki Town and choose Upgrade Weapon.

Killer
First time killing an enemy.

This trophy will be unlocked a few thousand times over while working towards the Platinum Trophy.

This trophy will be unlocked while working towards the Stance Mastery trophies.

Power of 10
Achieved 10 Chain Kills.

See "Power of 100"

Power of 100
Achieved 100 Chain Kills.

Successful parries occasionally trigger "Glimpse of Death" mode, in which successfully hitting the designated face button on your PS3 controller results in an Instant Kill (HIT SATSU). Successfully performing an Instant Kill will put you into the state of Chain Kill (REN SATSU), in which simply being approached by enemies triggers the "Glimpse of Death". Killing 100 enemies in a single chain unlocks the "Power of 100" trophy.

  • The first designated button will always be the X button.
  • The button image's motion corresponds to its location on the controller, e.g. when the X button is displayed, the image moves in a downward direction.
  • Pausing the game immediately upon entering "Glimpse of Death" mode gives you more than enough time to see which button has been designated to continue your Chain Kill; unpause the game while spamming the indicated button to continue your chain.
  • The hardest part of this trophy is finding the 100 enemies in the first place. Your best opportunity would be found in undertaking an elimination job for any of the job brokers, which are given after killing a member of the job broker's faction. Some of the climactic battles found within the game's storyline also feature unlimited spawning enemies.
Head Collector
Obtained all Heads.

See "Legendary Samurai"

Sword Safes can be purchased for 2000 Yen from the weapons merchant at Posting Station.

Assassin
Defeated Shuzen Fujimori.

Story-related. This trophy will be unlocked while working towards "Way of the Samurai".

Bushido
Defeated Sensei at the Dojo.

The Dojo is the multi-storied building at Guard Gate. You will have to defeat two other teachers at the Dojo before gaining access to Sensei. The easiest way to obtain this title is undoubtedly by playing on Instant Kill mode, where you'll be able to get a shot in before they even knew what hit them. Defeating Sensei with a Blunt Attack encourages her to give you a Golden Egg... kill her afterwards anyway to get your hands on her Bokuto.

Title Collector

See "Title Master"

Consult the Title List / Requirements thread for information on obtaining titles.

Upon beginning a new game, allow one of the thugs harassing Chidori outside of Munechika's farm in Takatane Village to hit you at least once. Eat a radish, and choose "Leave Amana" from the World Map to obtain the Vegetarian title, and a surprisingly substantial number of Samurai Points. Repeat this process until reaching 10000 Samurai Points to obtain the "Samurai Leader", "Samurai Hero" and "Legendary Samurai" trophies, as well as the "Head Collector" and "Outfit Collector" trophies.
