Introduction:

Hello and welcome to my trophy guide for The Unfinished Swan! It is a Playstation Network exclusive, best described as a first-person shooter with a unique twist. Instead of firing bullets, your character - an orphaned boy named Monroe - is armed with a magical paintbrush that reveals the geometry of the world, which is initially a blank canvas. Monroe uses these abilities to find the Unfinished Swan, an unfinished painting created by his deceased mother.

The trophies for The Unfinished Swan are very easy to obtain, with the exception of one, Minimalist, which takes a little bit of time. The game itself is very short and it should take no more than 4-5 hours to obtain 100%. There are 19 storybook pages and 64 balloons to collect through the game, but most of them are very simple to find. Use the guide linked in the respective trophy description to find them. There is a chapter select feature, which means that you can enjoy the game and go back to find the last collectibles you need and also obtain a few of the miscellaneous trophies without having to start again. You will need to release all 64 balloons before you can obtain two trophies, Rocketeer and Spaceman.

Note on Playstation Move

The Unfinished Swan can be played with the Playstation Move and Navigation Controllers. However, as much as it is fun to fire paintballs with the Move, I found movement to be a chore and I reverted to a standard Dualshock 3 almost immediately. Therefore, this guide is written from the perspective of the Dualshock 3. However, I have provided the different control configurations here for your convenience:

Dualshock 3

,,, or Fire paintballs
Jump
Pick up blueprint box
Sniper Rifle attachment (when unlocked)

Playstation Move

Fire paintballs
Jump
Pick up blueprint box
Sniper Rifle attachment (when unlocked)

Walkthrough:

Step 1: Complete the game, collecting all storybook pages and releasing all balloons.

The game itself is fairly simple and should cause no problems for seasoned gamers. There are no enemies to harm you except a few in Chapter 3 and the puzzles are easy to solve except one or two, which require a little bit of abstract thought. If you fall or die, you will be immediately reset, so do not worry. If you so wish, you can play through the game without a guide and go back via chapter select in Step 2 and find the last few collectibles. However, I have included all collectibles in this step as this is the fastest way to 100%. Refer to my collectibles guide here for a complete written guide of storybook pages and balloons. Note that after finding 3 balloons, you can purchase the “Balloon Radar” from the Toys menu, which is an extremely helpful indicator that will make finding the more hidden balloons easier. Finally, remember to look out for the hidden trophy, Telescopic, which can be found in Chapter 2, Stage 5 (“The Seawall”). Refer to the trophy description below for details.

At the end of this step you should have achieved the following:

Painter
Climber
Night Owl
Dreamer
Balloonist
Page Turner
Telescopic

Step 2: “Spaceman” and “Rocketeer” trophies.

Once you have completed the game and released all balloons, all of the Toys in the “Toys” menu will be unlocked. For these trophies, you will need the “Pickup Blueprint Boxes” and “Sniper Rifle” Toys. This will enable you to get the Spaceman and Rocketeer trophies. Also, if you missed Telescopic in your first playthrough, return to Chapter 2, Stage 5 via Chapter Select and pick it up. By the end of this step you should have achieved the following:

Rocketeer
Spaceman

Step 3: “Minimalist”.

This trophy is the hardest in the game, and so should be left until last when you have a full grasp of the game’s mechanics. Refer to the trophy description below for a full walkthrough of this trophy and a few tips. By the end of this step you should have the following trophy and your 100%:

Minimalist

10 trophies ( 1  )

  • Finish the Garden chapter.

This trophy is story related and can not be missed. There are 3 stages in this Chapter, which sees you firing black balls of paint to reveal the geometry of a completely white world. You will unlock this trophy upon completing the final stage, “The First Castle”.

  • Finish the Unfinished Empire chapter.

This trophy is story related and can not be missed. There are 6 stages in this Chapter, where your paintbrush now fires droplets of water to solve various puzzles involving water physics and growing vines. This is by far the longest and most puzzle-centric chapter. You will unlock this trophy upon completing the final stage, “The Belltower”.

  • Finish the Nighttime chapter.

This trophy is story related and can not be missed. There are 5 stages in this Chapter, in which some sections you have to navigate in complete darkness and others you build blocks with your paintbrush. Altering the brightness in “Options” does not make much difference either so you must use what little in-game lighting is available. This trophy will unlock upon completion of the final stage, “The King’s Monument”.

  • Finish the King's Dream chapter.

This trophy is story related and can not be missed. This is the final Chapter of the game, comprising three stages. I will not ruin it for you, but it is extremely easy and should cause you no problems. This trophy will unlock upon completion of the final stage, “The End”.

  • Launch a blueprint box 15 meters high.

    See ”Spaceman”

  • Launch a blueprint box 30 meters high.

For this trophy, you will need 3 components. You should already have unlocked all the Toys by now from collecting all the balloons. Specifically, you need the “Sniper Rifle” toy and the “Pickup Blueprint Boxes” toy. Thirdly, you need a level where you can create blueprint boxes, so load up the stage named “Home” from Chapter 3. Immediately in front of you, create a small square blueprint box and pick it up with . Now, aim directly upwards and press to equip your Sniper Rifle. Shoot the box twice in quick succession (no more as this will cause the box to fall) and you will earn this trophy. It may take a couple of tries to shoot the box into the air.

For those using the Playstation Move, pick up the box with , look directly upwards and then shoot it twice with the button.

  • Release all balloons.

To unlock this trophy, you must release all 64 balloons in the game. Some are very easy to spot, whilst others (especially those in the dark levels) are much more difficult. Thankfully, you can purchase the “Balloon Radar” from the Toys menu after finding 3 balloons. This brings up an indicator in the bottom left corner which fills up the closer you get to a balloon. I have written an extensive guide to finding the balloons, which can be found here:

    The Unfinished Swan Collectibles Guide

The trophy will unlock once you release the last balloon in the very last stage of the game. The stage-select menu in-game provides a list of balloons that you’ve found in each level to make this easier.

  • Reveal every storybook page in the game.

There are 19 storybook pages throughout the game. As you progress through the story, occasionally you will see a gold capital letter on a wall or surface. This is the location of the storybook page. To reveal it, shoot the gold letter with a paintball and a woman will narrate some contextual story about the level. The majority of pages are very easy to find, but in case you don’t want to miss one, here is my written guide for them all:

    The Unfinished Swan Collectibles Guide

The trophy will unlock once you reveal the last page in the “King’s Monument” stage of Chapter 3. There are no storybook pages in Chapter 4.

  • Reach the Watchtower without throwing more than 3 balls.

This is the hardest trophy in the game. You must select the very first stage of the game, “The Statue Garden”, and get all the way through to the second stage, “The Watchtower”, by firing only a maximum of 3 paintballs. Written below is my personal guide to getting this trophy. It may be helpful to run through the stage a couple of times first using paint to get used to exactly where you are going. The first bit is the hardest as the area is completely white, but after a little while there are small indicators for points of reference, such as the sound of your feet, other musical chimes, the golden swan footprints and the various gold objects and statues that act as landmarks. A good tip that I used was to pause the game and choose “Options”. Then, turn the game music all the way down and sound effects all the way up. This will make hearing where you are easier.

When you first load the level, do not turn round with the camera or use the at all. Instead, go left holding so that you are strafing until you hear your footsteps cease and you hit a wall. Then do the same thing, except this time go backwards holding . Now go all the way left again. Once you hit a wall, take two steps to the right and go all the way backwards again. Now go all the way to the right until you can no longer move, then go backwards as far as you can. Then, take two steps forward. Then go left and you should hear a kind of falling noise (in reality you are dropping down ledges). Notice that you are now walking on leaves. Walk left until the 6 golden swan’s footprints appear right in front of your feet. Feel free to move the camera around now as you can use these footprints as markers.

For the next step, stand on the footprints I just mentioned, facing the same direction as the footprints. Now, strafe right until a set of 3 golden footprints appears a little way directly in front of you. Now walk straight forward, past the set of 3 footprints, and aim towards the two sets of 6 and 5 footprints which are very close together. Now, walk straight ahead from those footprints and you should hear your feet walking along a wooden walkway. Once you reach the wall at the end, strafe left for exactly 2 seconds. Now walk forward until you hit the wall and strafe left until you hit that wall. Then take a couple of steps forward until you hit another wall, then go up to the right and strafe until you see the golden crown straight ahead of you. A musical cue will play to let you know you’ve reached the garden.

As you should know from the first time you did this stage, the crown sits atop a statue. Walk straight forward until you can not move anymore; you will have hit the front of the statue. Now, keeping the crown in your eyesight, circle around the statue until you are exactly behind it, facing the way you came. Stop and then strafe completely to the right so you hit a wall. Now run forward and you should hear your footsteps running up a wooden plank. When you hit the wall, strafe only 3 or 4 small footsteps left, otherwise you will fall off and have to realign yourself again. Go up the next ramp and listen carefully for the footprints to change from wooden back to normal stone. At this point you should turn left and walk forwards until you come across another set of 6 footprints. Make sure the crown is always on your left.

This next part is the trickiest of the level. Once you reach the footprints, stand on the front-most one and fire ONE paintball directly in front of you. This should reveal a plank to the left which you need to align yourself on and walk forward. Once you’re standing on the plank, fire another paintball directly forward and your path to the opposite rooftop should be clear. This is still difficult, as sometimes you will fall down whereas others you will manage to walk the whole way across. If you do fall, use the crown to realign yourself and work your way up the ramps again. Now walk forward and hopefully you will cross the ladders that are laid across the rooftops. You will know from the boy exclaiming if you have fallen down. If done correctly, eventually you will stop when you run forward. At this point, jump with and you will hopefully hear footsteps running across roof tiles. Keep walking forward and you will drop down.

When you drop down, you will see various gold parts of statues. What you need to do is head towards the golden unicorn horn, which is forward and a bit to the left. Hopefully you should also see a golden handle here too. Walk up to it and position yourself underneath it, facing left (the same way as the handle). Fire one more paintball and an outline of a staircase should appear. Walk forwards until you start ascending the staircase, and then turn round so you can see the handle again. This is because the stairway twists and turns, so the handle acts as your reference point. Walk backwards so your back is against the banister, and then around to the left before it curves around to the right again. You should be able to judge by your height in relation to the golden handle if you are going up or not. Once you are back up to the top of the staircase, you should see the storybook page you revealed earlier on the left side of the screen. Walk directly left so you end up in front of the page and walk towards it. Walk past the first set of 6 footprints, but stop once you get to the 3 heading off to the left. You will now see a hot air balloon in the distance and a black hole in the floor. Walk towards it, fall down and follow the swan forwards and the trophy will pop!

Secret trophies

  • Look at the sleeping King.

This is the hidden trophy in the game, but it is pretty much in your path so it is hard to miss. In Chapter 2 during the “Seawall” stage, immediately as you start turn right and climb up the three flights of stairs in front of you. Go up to the telescope in front of you and press . Zoom in as far as you can with (on both the Dualshock and the Move) until you see the King asleep in his chair in front of the fire. The trophy should unlock straight after.
