Road Map

Introduction: Welcome to the wonderful world of Pro Bass Fishing! If you're a fishing enthusiast, then we have just the game for you. In this game you will be fishing against the pros and trying to catch the most or the heaviest fish around.

This game is intended to an homage to fishing lovers. As such, it has been crafted to be more realistic and less "arcadey" as other Rapala games. The game has very basic controls and handles very well. It also supports the PS Move, but I can't comment one way or another about that. Overall, this is a very easy platinum to get. That said, it can be pretty daunting if you aren't into fishing because you will be doing a LOT of fishing. (I ended up catching over 500 fish.) And while there is some variation, you'll pretty much be doing the same thing over and over again. If you're cool with this, then dive in...

Step 0: Read this road map thoroughly. The "Lure Master" trophy requires you to catch at least one fish with each lure. Here is an alphabetized list for you to keep track of which ones you used.

Step 1: Unlock the Tournament Mode trophies. Most of these will come naturally by simply completing the various tournaments. Still, you should take a minute or two to digest the trophies associated to tournament mode. Be sure to read the "Good Sportsmanship" specific guide. Unlock all of these trophies and move on to step 2.

Step 2: Complete all of the Free Fishing mode challenges. Welcome to the major grind portion of this game. Read the "Master Challenger" trophy for more details. You will simultaneously be trying to catch monster fish during this step.

Step 3: Mop up. You may have some monster fish left to catch and a few lures that you have to use, but there shouldn't much left in this step.

How to Fish

All of the following info is for a players using a standard Sony controller. In particular, the required actions my be (substantially) different when playing with the PS Move.

Aiming: By default, you can adjust where you are going to cast by moving the casting ring around with . If you are next to a fishing spot, your casting ring will turn green, otherwise it will be whitish.

Casting: There are essentially two ways to cast: overhand casting and pitch casting. In the former, your rod is swung vertically, while in the latter, your rod is swung from the side. Accordingly, it makes sense that you move the vertically to perform an overhand cast, while you move it from side-to-side to perform a pitch cast. I found the overhand much more intuitive and therefore used it 99% of the time.

To execute a perfect cast, do the following:

  • Set your casting ring.
  • Press and hold .
  • Quickly pull down, then push up on the releasing as you press up.

These directions are for overhand casting. Go side-to-side instead of up and down for a pitch cast.

Hooking: When a fish bites, the screen will prompt you which way to pull the rod with an arrow. Move the in this direction and you’ll get a perfect hook. Pull in the opposite direction and you’ll get a poor hook. (There is a challenge that requires you to get poor hooks.)

Reeling: While reeling in a fish, you always want to try to pull against the direction that the fish is swimming while simultaneously trying to keep the fish in the center of the screen as much as possible. So, if the fish is on the right of your screen, pull left and vice versa.

Despite what the onscreen messages may say, you always want to be reeling in the fish by constantly holding down . I repeat, never let up on when reeling in a fish. This is particularly important to remember when attempting to unlock the “Like a Sturgeon” trophy. If you let go of the button, your sturgeon is going to get away. Don’t let go of !

Special moves: There are three special moves in the game. They are not all available right away, but they’ll all be unlocked pretty early in the game.

The first one pertains to “flipping” fish in your boat. For smaller fish, you will occasionally be prompted to “flip” the fish into your boat, by pressing . Just press the button when prompted and you’re good to go. There is a trophy that requires you do this 20 times.

The second move is a power reeling move that lets you quickly reel in fish. You build up your power meter while reeling in a fish and keeping it centered. If your meter fills up, you will get a prompt to initiate a power move by pressing . If do so, you’ll get second prompt telling you which way to flick the . Do this and you’ll perform the power move.

The last move prevents fish from escaping. Every so often, a bar will appear on the top portion of your screen when you’re reeling in a fish. You’ll be told to press when the ticker passes in the blue portion of the bar. Do so and you’ll prevent the fish from escaping. Conversely, if you press when the ticker is in the red, the fish will automatically escape.

[PS3T Would Like to Thank Cauchy for this Roadmap]

Expert Angler
Unlock all Trophies. (1)
Rookie Angler
Enter a Tournament mode event.

See the “Elite Angler” trophy.

First Catch
Catch 1 fish of any species.
Not much to say here beyond that this will obviously be one of the first trophies that you get.
Something's Fishy
Find and cast into a fishing spot on any lake.

See the “Seeing Spots” trophy.

Lightning Catch
Be the first competitor to catch a fish in a Tournament mode event,

You’ll most likely unlock the “Quick Catch” trophy along side this one. Just follow the strategy specified there and you’ll eventually get this one.

First Steps
Finish a Tournament mode event.

See the “Elite Angler” trophy.

Perfect Form
Perform a perfect cast.

See the “Too Perfect!” trophy.

Perfect Hook
Get a fish on your line with a perfect hook.

See the “Hooking Perfection” trophy.

Flying Fish
Catch a fish of any species by flipping it into your boat.

See the “Flap Jack” trophy.

Confident?
Weigh in early during a Tournament mode event.

You just have to weigh in early not even win. You can weigh in early by going back to the docks after a little time has passed during the event. Obviously, you'll need to have caught at least one fish to weigh in.

Challenger
Complete any Challenge in Free Fishing mode.

See the “Master Challenger” trophy.

The One That Got Away
Lose a fish.

After you hook a fish, don’t do anything and the fish will eventually get away and you’ll unlock the trophy.

Isn't She Cute!
Raise a lure's attractiveness to its maximum level during a retrieve.

You should unlock this naturally. If you’re having trouble, just do the following: Choose a “fast casting” lure. Go away from any fishing spots. Throw the cast about 100 feet or so. Press and hold down on the and start reeling it in. The trophy will unlock shortly thereafter.

Original Feeling
Catch a fish with the Rapala Original Floater lure.

See the “Lure Master” trophy.

So Close, Yet So Far
Finish a Tournament mode event in 2nd or 3rd place.

This is actually harder than the “Victory!” trophy that requires you to get first place, the reason being that the other fishermen are pretty bad. It’s best to hold off on this trophy until you’re in the Legend Season, where the other fishers are at least decent. Then pick an event that requires you to catch a certain number of fish and always just stay right behind the lead. Don’t tie with the lead, because the tie always goes to you.

Is That Who I Think It Is?
In Tournament Mode, begin fishing alongside each competitor on the lake while they are fishing.

This trophy is kind of a pain. There are 19 other fishers on the lake during any event and there’s no real way to keep track of all of them except possibly jotting their names down. I’m not sure if you have to drive up and fish next to each of these competitors in a single event, but I’m pretty sure you don’t. In any case, it’s definitely possible to do this in a single event, because I did. If you go this route, be sure to pick an event that has a reasonably long time limit and be prepared to loose the event because you might not have enough time to actually fish. (Don’t worry you can always replay the event.)

Multitasking
Finish a Secondary Objective in a Tournament mode event.

I don’t recommend going out of the way to do a secondary objective because many of them will come naturally. But if you’re getting impatient, most of the secondary objectives are really easy. To see the secondary objective, pause the game with and then choose the “Objectives” option.

The Big One
Catch a record fish of any species.

See the “Master Challenger” trophy.

The 10th Grade
Catch a total of 10 fish.

By the end of this game, I had caught over 500 fish. So, yeah, this one will come naturally.

Victory!
Finish in 1st place in any event in Tournament mode.

There’s not much to say here. In fact, I think you actually have to try to fail in order to never get in first place on some of these events.

Journeyman
Drive for more than 5 hours in a Tournament mode event and finish in the top 5.

These are five in game hours not real life hours. So, you’ll need to drive around for five minutes in a tournament event, then place in the top 5. While this may sound hard, it is not at all, because your opponents are pretty bad fishermen. It’s probably best to knock this guy out during the Rookie Tournament though, because the other fishers do get better. I think the best way to go about getting this trophy is to drive around for the first five minutes of the event, then go and do what it takes to get in the top five, preferably first place. Again, this should be pretty easy.

Intermediate Angler
Complete a tier in the Rookie Season of Tournament mode.

See the “Driven” trophy.

Driven
Complete all events in the first tier of any season in Tournament mode.

Well, you should be playing all of the events in all the tiers so you can rack up the most points and ensure that you win the tournament. But if you insist on cutting corners, you at least should finish all the events in the first tier or the Rookie Season to unlock this trophy and the “Intermediate Angler” trophy.

Advanced Angler
Complete the Rookie Season in Tournament mode.

See the “Elite Angler” trophy.

Friendly Angler
Finish the Rookie Season in Tournament mode with less than 3 penalty points.
(Possibly missable) See the “Good Sportsmanship” trophy.
Fish Lover
Catch 5 fish of different species during any Tournament mode event or in Free Fishing mode.

This is best gotten while doing challenges in Free Fishing mode because there is a challenge (I can’t remember the name) on one of the lakes (I think it was Minnetonka) that requires you to catch four different species. If you do this challenge by catching the four regular fish on the lake and then go catch the monster fish afterwards, you’ll unlock this trophy.

I Do Attract!
Keep a lure's attractiveness level at 90% or higher for more than 30 seconds.

You want to start by using the same strategy as in the “Isn’t She Cute!” trophy, making sure that you cast far enough so that it takes at least 30 seconds to completely reel in the lure. Remember to cast away from fish because you do not want any fish to bite.

Flap Jack
Perform the Flip In Boat maneuver 20 times.

You will unlock this ability very early in the game, as long as you’re progressing through tournament mode first. Consult the "special moves" portion of the "How to Fish" part of the road map for details on flipping fish.

It's a Monster!
Catch a Monster Fish of any species.

See the “True Legend” trophy.

False Hope
Catch 5 fish during any tournament event Weigh In interval of time.

After the normal time runs out for a tournament event, you are given 10 minutes to get back and weigh in. During this 10 minute period, you need to catch five fish. After you’ve caught the fifth fish, the trophy will unlock.

Quick Catch
Catch a fish of any species in under 1 minute from the start of any event in Tournament mode.

This was one of the first trophies I got. Just find a fishing spot quickly and catch a fish. The time you take to choose your lure and whatnot don’t count towards this trophy, so you can take your time to get a good fishing set first.

Cast Master
Cast 500 times.

This is another trophy that will come without any extra effort. For reference, I had about 2300 cast when I was finished with the game.

Location Scout
Find and cast into 5 different fishing spots in any event in Tournament mode.

This is quite easy. Just uncover five fishing spots and cast into them. Remember you just have to cast. In other words, you don’t need to catch or even hook a fish.

Top Challenger
Complete all the Challenges on any lake in Free Fishing mode.

See the “Master Challenger” trophy.

Need a Bigger Boat?
Catch 30 fish during any event in Tournament mode or during a single session in Free Fishing mode.

See the “Master Challenger” trophy.

The Captain
Accumulate 1 hour of boat driving in any game mode.

Unlike the "Journeyman" trophy, trophy actually depends on your actual accumulated driving time, not the in game time. That said, I’m pretty sure this is still near impossible to not get this trophy naturally, since you’ll be doing a lot of driving from challenge to challenge in this game. But if you’re getting impatient, you can just drive around for an hour to unlock the trophy straight away.

Too Perfect!
Accumulate 30 perfect casts in any game mode.

This should unlock relatively early in your time with this game, as long as you’re following the casting instructions outlined in the “How to Fish” portion of the road map.

Hooking Perfection
Accumulate 30 perfect hooks in any game mode.

This is another extremely easy trophy. I unlocked it naturally while playing tournament mode. If you need more insight on how to get a perfect hook, consult the “How to Fish” portion of the road map.

Veteran Angler
Complete the Pro Season in Tournament mode.

See the “Elite Angler” trophy.

Good Sportsmanship
Complete all seasons in Tournament mode with 0 penalty points.

(Possibly missable) It may be the case that this trophy and the one that references it are missable, but they’re pretty hard to miss. You get a penalty by ramming your boat into others while they’re fishing or driving your boat into their fishing line. Basically, you get a penalty if you try to screw up another fisherman. However, you won’t get a penalty right away, at least I didn’t. If I ever accidentally hit messed with another fisher, I usually just got a warning. So, to avoid getting penalties, just steer clear of other fishermen and you’ll be fine.

Show Off
Win any event in Tournament mode without casting into a fishing spot.

This is actually really easy. You can cast right next to a fishing spot just not in one. So, go find good fishing spots like you normally would, move your fishing ring around until it turns green, then move it slowly away from this point and stop just after it is no longer green. You’ll still be next to all the fish, but you won’t technically be casting into a fishing spot.

Bookworm
Enter into all categories in the Fish-O-Pedia.

You can unlock this trophy any time you want. The Fish-O-Pedia can be found at the main menu or the pause menu. The menu hierarchy is as follows:

  • Fish-O-Pedia
    • Lure Presentation Techniques
    • Equipment
      • Fishing Boats
      • Rods
      • Reels
      • Fishing Lines
      • Lures
      • FishFinder/GPS (no submenu)
    • North American Freshwater Lakes
    • Fish Species
    • Rapala Pro Staff
Elite Angler
Complete the Legendary Season in Tournament mode.

While working towards this trophy, you will necessarily unlock the other trophies that reference it. The tournament champ is determined by the number points you have at the end. You get more points by placing high in events. So, as long as you’re placing high in the events and doing all of the events, winning the tournament will be very easy. If you’re careful and take a look at the other Tournament mode trophies while playing the events, you shouldn't have to replay any of them. One final important note: you should avoid getting penalties because you may have to replay Tournament mode if you end up getting one. See the “Good Sportsmanship” trophy for more details.

True Legend
Catch all 30 Monster Fish.

Click here for my brief Monster Fish Guide.

Seeing Spots
Find and cast into at least 60% of all fishing spots across all the lakes in any game mode.

In tournament mode, fishing spots show up as little white dots or large green spots. The large green ones have hot-air balloons floating above them. In free fishing mode, all of the fishing spots show up as medium sized light yellowish dots on the radar. In order to be sure that you are casting into a fishing spot, you maneuver the casting ring over the general area until it turns green and then you need to perform a perfect case into the ring.

There have been early reports that this trophy may be glitched, but I had no problems with it unlocking. For me, it actually unlocked in the second tier of the Legendary Season tournament. I just made sure to cast in any fishing spot that showed up on the radar as I progressed through the various tournament events.

Alternatively, southurnbuck has found a method posted over at our sister site to quickly knock out this trophy. However, the original post was removed (or deleted) for some reason. Anyway, milhouse46 has been kind enough to summarize the method:

...Start a new game, go do quick fishing on every lake, and cast into each [of the] yellow spots that are shown from your starting position.
Pro Bass Angler
Catch at least 50 fish of any of the Bass species in any game mode.

I got this very early in my quest to knock out the challenges in free fishing mode. There will be many challenges that require you to catch a certain number of fish without any other stipulations. Use these opportunities to catch bass.

Fashionista
Unlock every single clothing item for your male or female angler.

You unlock clothing items as you clear tournament mode events and complete challenges. If you finish the tournament mode first, then this trophy will unlock just before you get the “Master Challenger” trophy.

Weather-Proof
Catch a fish in every one of these conditions: morning, noon, evening and sunny, overcast, rainy.

This unlocked naturally for me sometime while playing through the tournament mode. So, unless the weather during this mode is random, you should unlock it during that mode, as well. If this is the case, you can go for while in free fishing mode, since you can adjust the weather setting in that mode.

Lure Master
Catch at least one fish, any fish, with every lure.

Since many of the lures only unlock after you complete an associated challenge, this will be one of the last trophies you unlock, unless you carefully plan which challenges you go for. At any rate, you can click here for an alphabetized lure checklist.

Like a Sturgeon
Finish the Sturgeon Legends event in top 5 using only the 10 lbs. (4.5 Kg) fishing line.

This is one of the hardest things to do in the game, but it’s not that bad. You’ll come across this event late in the Legends Tournament. Once you learn how to reel in these large fish, getting in the top 5 isn’t hard at all. You’ll roughly need 150 – 180 lbs in total weight, which corresponds to averaging about 50 – 60 lbs per sturgeon. To catch these things, just follow the instructions in the “How to Fish” portion of the road map, specifically the "reeling" part. Remember to be sure that you're using a 10 lbs line. The lure you choose won't affect the trophy, but you should obviously use one that's effective to catching sturgeons.

Master Challenger
Complete all Challenges on all lakes in single player Free Fishing mode.

All of the trophies that reference this one will unlock in your quest to unlock this one. In particular, there are many challenges that have you fulfill specific trophy requirements. So, you’ll get those along the way.

This trophy is the real time sink in this game. It stinks because there are many challenges that have overlapping requirements (e.g. “catch 20 fish” and “catch 20 fish of the same species”), but you have to complete them independently. It’s also pretty annoying that you have to drive your boat to each challenge location, but the challenge locations aren’t marked on your radar. So, you’ll often have to a little searching. On the plus side, 90% of the challenges are extremely easy. However, there are some that are tougher because they have very specific requirements on the type or weight of the fish that need to be caught and this can boil down to a little luck.

There is one challenge worth singling out though and that is the “Bass Fight!” challenge on Lake Lanier. This challenge reads: “Catch a world record Largemouth Bass (over 22lbs 4oz)”. However, I found the description extremely misleading. You do not need to catch a fish larger than 22 lbs 4 oz. I don’t know what the minimum weight is, but after about 1.5 hours of searching for a record largemouth bass, I said “screw it” and caught the largest one I could find and managed to complete the challenge with a 16 lbs fish.

One last remark, there is a monster fish challenge for each lake, and moreover, many of the remaining challenges will be made easier if you hunt a monster fish (e.g. challenges that require you to catch a certain weight in fish). As such, you may want to refer to the monster fish guide periodically while completing your challenges. Here is a link.
