Introduction

Mahjong Tales: Ancient Wisodom is a fun little title for those who enjoy playing Mahjong by giving you tons of new challenges, different game types and so much more. For those who are unfamiliar with Mahjong, it's basically an ancient version of solitaire using tiles instead of cards. You're presented with a pile of mahjong tiles that feature icons as well as numbers and are often arranged in some sort of pattern or shape; you need to match tiles that can be moved without disturbing the other game pieces. Once you match two tiles, you clear them from the board and move on. The goal is to clear all the tiles before running out of matches. The concept is simple, entertaining, and great for killing time as well as challenging your mind with some of the puzzles.

Road Map

Step 1: Play Through Ancient Tales Mode

Select Ancient Tales and play through all 5 tales of it (45 total levels). Once you complete all the tales, you will pick up Why Stop With Just One? & Sage. While playing, also try to aim for the misc. side trophies as well:

Don't use any hints in the in the first tale - Didn't Buy A Clue
Finish a level in under 2:00 - Speed Reader
Get 2500 remaining tiles points in a level - Score!
Get 5-quick matches if you can - Quick On The Draw
Make 2000 matches (will come from just playing) - Matchmaker

All 5 of those are definitely possible and easiest to be done during this step so make sure you definitely aim for them while playing!

Step 2: Play 100 Layouts In Infinity Mode

This is going to be a HUGE grind, but thankfully it won't be very difficult, just slightly time consuming. Select Infinity Mode and just start playing through the different layouts there. Once you finish a level, the ying-yang symbol in the bottom right corner of that level will turn gray, showing you that it has been played and finished. Easiest method I can tell you to getting through it faster is to constantly use the hint button (). Select hint, make the match that it shows you and then repeat until you either finish the level or run out of matches. BE CAREFUL of spamming the button immediately after making a match because if you do run out of moves, hitting square at the "Out Of Moves" pop-up menu will reset the level back to the beginning forcing you to redo it. Instead, go a little slower between matches and when faced with "Out Of Moves," make sure to select "Reshuffle" as it will re-arrange the remaining tiles and let you keep going. As long as you remove all the tiles within the 3 shuffles it gives you (which if you're using my method, it should never be an issue), it will count as the level being completed when you're done. Once you complete the 100 levels, you will get Can't Get Enough & Infinity And Beyond.

Step 3: Play Motion Mode

Motion Mode can get tricky as you don't have the luxury of sitting back and planning your moves you do in the traditional type games. There are 45 levels in Motion Mode that you need to complete. During this run through it, you want to make sure you do not lose a life during the entire 45 stages. This can be an EXTREME pain in the butt, but if you focus on using the tips presented in the trophy guide & use power-ups, it can be made easier. The most helpful tip I can give you as well is to quit to the main menu after you sucessfully complete a level without dying, save your save data to a USB stick or something off your hard drive, then move on to the next level. This way if you die in the next stage, you can just copy your last good save data back to your PS3 and try again. MAKE SURE TO SAVE/COPY AFTER EVERY SUCESSFUL STAGE!!!! Once you make it through all 45 levels without dying, you will pick up Dragon Slayer & Who Needs Sleep?  Also if you've been following the guide up to this point, you will also net Who's The Master (Requires "Dragon Slayer", "Sage" & "Can't Get Enough").

Once you make it through all 45 levels without dying, you will pick up &

*Note: You can try to obtain all 3 related to Motion Mode in this initial playthrough, but it can be extremely difficult, which is why I suggest doing 2 run throughs. If you are going to attempt it in one run, than make sure that you use NO power-ups at all during any of the stages.

Step 4: Play Motion Mode Again

*This step is optional if you obtained all the trophies during the last one*

Play through Motion Mode again, but this time you are aiming at using NO power-ups. This is another one that is going to take alot of patience and practice. See the trophy guide for tips on making it easier. Once you are able to complete them all without power-ups, you will get I Don't Need No Stinking Power-Ups.

Step 5: Play Online

You will need to play 50 online games. While playing the online games, you want to make sure that you win 25 games & 5-in-a-row. Easiest method is to find a boosting partner in the Trophy Boosting Thread and to boost these. Have one person make a room and the other join him, than after you start the match, have one quit. Repeat 25 times each (so a total of 50 games total between you) and that will net you Come Out And Play, The Gunslinger, & The Duelist.

Note: If you have the DLC addon, make sure that 10 of the games have custom layouts as it will knock out one of the trophies in the DLC list, saving you some time from going back and redo'ing them.

Step 6: Clean Up

At this point you should have all the trophies, but if not, than go back and clean up any missing ones.

[PS3T Would Like to Thank OnceFallen for this Road Map]

Infinity and Beyond
Complete 100 different Layouts in ‘Infinity’ Mode

This trophy is just like the "Can't Get Enough" trophy. You have to play and complete all 100 Tile Layouts which is time consuming but easy and the trophy is yours. Remember: on each tile layout for you to select in Infinity Mode is a yin yang symbol; if it's grayed out, that means you have not completed it, if it's coloured in you have played and completed that layout. I got this trophy after completing 99 out of 100 layouts.

Matchmaker
Match 2000 sets of Tiles (1)

Just play normally in the Ancient Tales mode and when you get to Tale 3 about the 5th - 7th Level of the tale you unlock the trophy.

Who’s The Master?
Receive ‘Sage’, ‘Dragon Slayer’ and ‘Infinity and Beyond'

First get the 3 trophy's and you will unlock this trophy which is easy to achieve.

Who Needs Sleep?
Complete ‘Motion’ Mode without losing a single Life

Play all 45 levels without losing a life i would say use power ups while going for this and you gotta be quick. I got to level 12 till i lost a life and i decided to not bother with the trophy so i can't really give good useful tips rather then to be quick matching or throwing a tile out the door and using power ups.

Can’t Get Enough
Complete 25 different Layouts in ‘Infinity’ Mode

This is simple and time consuming, play and complete 25 tile layouts and this trophy is yours for the taking, but i happened to get this trophy by completing 24 layouts in stead of 25. I triple counted too be sure. * NOTE * on each tile layout for you to select in Infinity Mode is a yin yang symbol if it's grayed out that means you have not completed it but if it's coloured in that means you have played and completed that layout.

Come Out and Play
Play 50 Network Games (1)

Me and a friend (thanks Dropeti) did this. We got this as we were getting "The Duelist" and "The Gunslinger" trophies by getting one person to make a public room online (make sure it's the correct person you want too play against). Start the game and have each person quit out of the game. Do this up to a total of 50 times and you will get the Trophy.

Didn’t Buy a Clue
Complete an entire Tale without using the Hint Button

Another simple trophy. If you sit and play a tale (remember theirs 9 stages in a tale) without using the hint button to find what tiles to take away, then your good for the trophy.

Dragon Slayer
Complete all Levels in ‘Motion’ Mode

Select Motion Mode and complete all 45 levels to receive this trophy. It doesn't have to be in one sitting and you can use powers ups which makes things easier, but it would force you to replay the game for the no power ups trophy. You can use the door on the top left to get rid of 1 tile at a time. Once you get rid of 1 you have to wait about 10 seconds give or take and it will open again for you to throw out another tile. Also the tiles go on a conveyor belt around the screen but if it reaches the dragon you lose a life, which makes you lose the “Who Needs Sleep Trophy“ so you have to act quick to prevent the tiles to reach the dragon.

I Don’t Need No Stinking Power-Ups
Complete ‘Motion’ Mode without using ‘Bomb’, ‘Cannon’, ‘Ice’ and ‘Wild number’ Power-Ups (1)

* Credit * A Tip For This Trophy From User SkippyCue

The basic strategy for motion mode should be to clear the conveyor belt first prior to making matches on the board. I would start out every board by making matches on the board quickly before the conveyor tiles became available. Once they are available I would focus on the front of the line clearing any tiles I could until I couldn't find any to clear. At this point I'd look to the board and start quickly making matches using the board alone. Whatever you do, don't spend a lot of time searching for a match because time is too valuable to waste. If you can't find a match within a second or two, move on to another tile! Keep in mind that you can still use the Rainbow Tile to clear all open tiles of the same type.

Now... here's the secret weapon and the key to beating motion mode without the specified power-ups... The Magic Wand! When I first played through motion mode attempting to not die, I used power-ups so I never realized the potential of the magic wand. I thought it did just what the description says, "All open tiles of that type will disappear". Well, it is so much more useful than that! When you click on the Magic Wand, all the tiles that can be matched will be highlighted green! This is VERY helpful and you should memorize which tiles on the conveyor belt can be cleared before selecting one. This way after you select one you can quickly match the other tiles you memorized because you know they have matches. If there are not a lot of highlighted tiles on the conveyor belt, then look to see what tiles are highlighted on the main board because that is also helpful. The more you can memorize, the more you can clear quickly! Without the use of this power-up, I would've had a lot more trouble getting this trophy! You may wonder why this is helpful if you've been matching each tile you can as they come by, but as you clear tiles others open up. Tiles that didn't match before could match now and the wand shows all of that to you! Learn to take advantage of the wand, you will need it! The only problem is you have to survive without the wand a lot because it seems to come randomly. All I can say is try, try again if you don't get enough wands to get you through. Depending on the level, you may or may not need the help of wands... some levels didn't have any that I recall, but on other levels they saved my butt big time!

A general tip is don't focus on the main board alone too much because the conveyor will start to grow very quickly and then you'll be lost. My basic strategy was to match with the conveyor belt and if I noticed a pair or two on the board I'd clear them on my way back and forth to the conveyor belt.

Thanks for the tip SkippyCue !

Quick on the Draw
Make 5 Quick Matches in-a-row

I went back to the first level for this trophy. You have to be really quick in order to get it and it took me a few tries. After you make 5 Quick matches then the trophy will pop at that point you don't have to complete it to make it pop.

Sage
Complete all Tales in ‘Ancient Tales’ Mode

This is easy to grab. Just play and complete all 5 tales (9 levels each tale) and you'll get the trophy.

Score!
Score 2500 remaining tiles points in one ‘Ancient Tales’ level

I got this trophy going back to level 1-8 (1st tale 2nd last level) and i got it pretty easily. Just keep an eye to where the gold tiles are as they get stacked at the start and then go at them on the sides and try to uncover them around the area to where the two gold pieces are and try not taking away too many tiles from other places when you don't have too as this gives you the points you need for this trophy. This can be done on other levels but I chose to do it on this one.

Speed Reader
Complete an ‘Ancient Tales’ Layout in less than 2 minutes

I got this trophy in 1:55 on the very first level on the first Tale "A Magic Paintbrush". Me and my mother were working on this so it greatly helps if you don't notice tiles as quick by yourself. Playing with someone next too you can help you spot moves much faster.

The Duelist
Win 5 Network games in-a-row

Refer to "The Gunslinger" on how to get this trophy.

The Gunslinger
Win 25 Network games

Me and a friend (thanks Dropeti) would both play online. He made the public room (or you can take turns making rooms) and i would click join game and if he sees me appear next to the word Guest then he will click start game. We couldn't get invitations to lobby to work, so we had to do it the other way. If you don't see the correct host (or guest incase your hosting) back out and select it again till you see your friends name. So we took turns quitting 5 times each to get up to 25 wins for each other and then you will obtain the trophy. This was some time ago and hardly anyone played online so it's good to get a boosting partner. While doing it 5 times in a row we got “The Duelist Trophy“ as well.

Why Stop With Just One?
Complete a single Tale in ‘Ancient Tales’ Mode

This is another one that is really easy and straight forward Each Tale has 9 levels and there is only 1 tale available at the start and after you've done the 9 levels ( 9 levels = 1 tale ) then you unlock the Trophy.

DLC: Booster Pack
Cost: 4.99 Trophies: 5

Beastmaster
Complete all Layouts of Animal Pack

There are 25 layouts in the Animal pack. Once you complete a layout, the little ying-yang in the corner will turn from black to gray-ish signalling you completed that one. As easier/quicker method I've found to rush through them is to keep getting hints (press ), select the 2 tiles it shows, then repeat. If it shows that you have run out of moves, make sure to select shuffle tiles () instead of restart (make sure you go slowly between making a match then hitting for you next hint as you can accidently restart if you run out of moves)! Once you finish all 25 of the layouts, the trophy will pop.

Mason Apprentice
Create 5 Layouts using Layout Editor. Each Layout should have at least 70 tiles in it

See "Mason Master".

Mason Master
Create 10 Layouts using Layout Editor. Each Layout should have at least 100 tiles in it

To create a custom layout, from the main menu select "Infinity" and then "Layout Editor".

The quickest method to get this trophy is this:

  1. Lay a ton of tiles down all over the place and then keep stacking more on top of them by changing the tile level (use & to adjust it). Keep doing this until you have at least 100+ tiles on the screen.

  2. Pause the game and select "Save Layout" to save it.

  3. Go back into editing that same one, but place 2 additional new tiles into the layout anywhere on the screen

  4. Go back to the pause screen and select "Save Layout" again and when asked if you want to overwrite the existing save or create a new one, select create a new one (just press ).

  5. Repeat steps 3 & 4 EIGHT more times and the trophy will pop!

Got Layout?!
Play through 10 network games on custom Layouts

You will need to have created a custom layout (or play against someone that has one) prior to obtaining this trophy. From the Main Menu select "Multiplayer"->"Network"->"Public Match" & when in the Layout Selection screen, make sure to choose a custom layout (one you have created) for use in the match. Once your opponent joins the match, play the layout to the end (doesn't matter if you win or lose). Do this 9 more times for the trophy to pop!

Easiest/Quickest method to do this is to set up a custom layout with only 2 tiles so the match goes extremely quickly and to do it with a boosting partner. If you need help finding someone to boost with, use the Trophy Boosting Thread.

Note: If you haven't gotten your 50 Network Games trophy yet from the main game, it's best to combine this trophy in with that run. Just make sure that 10 of the games you play towards it are custom and you'll get this one as well, saving you some time.

Be the Best, Mahjong the Rest
Earn 'Who Is The Master' and 'Beastmaster' trophies

For this trophy, you must already have the trophy Who Is The Master from the original game and obtained the Beastmaster trophy by clearing all the animal pack layouts included in this DLC. You can find out how to achieve Who Is The Master by viewing the main game's trophy guide found HERE. Once you obtain them both, this trophy will pop!
