Introduction
Welcome to one of the most breathtaking experiences you can have on your PS3. ThatGameCompany started with flOw, then made things a whole lot greater with Flower, and now take the experience to the next level with Journey.
The game is about an anonymous character's journey. The vast majority of the game is left to interpretation. There are NO vocals in this game at all, and the text is very limited (just a basic intro on how to play and credits). The goal of this game isn't to shoot faster, but to actually have an experience. There are sounds and visual clues that you need to rely on to guide you thru the game.
When playing online, you can NOT chat in game. Nor is there even a name tag above the other player. This was done purposely to make you rely on in-game clues/movement of your partner, to interpret on your own. When boosting, there are some things you can do to give off clues as to wether it is your boosting partner or not - such as say jumping 5 times and then running around in a circle, or whatever the two of you make up to ensure it is your boosting partner that you paired up with.
Walkthrough
Step 1: Complete the game (optional, highly suggested)
This is the most important step. Do not read the trophy guide, heck don't even read the trophy descriptions. Simply play the game, and explore as much as you can. Pretend for a few hours that games are made to enjoy. This Journey is one of the finest experiences any game has to offer.
Step 2: Online Companion
While the previous "optional" step can be done offline or online, do this one specifically online. It's best to boost this, as there is no voice communication in game, only a few gestures that are left to the partners imagination. I personally did this with random strangers online, and I would say a fair portion of people playing this game are intuitive, or merely want the trophies as well. You can find boosting partners here.
At some point, put down the controller to meditate with your partner for at least twenty seconds to unlock Reflection.
You want to stick somewhat close to your partner, and definitely complete each level at the same time (both sit down in the glowing meditation circle at around the same time). When you complete the game, you will unlock Return. If you did this with an online partner, you will also get Crossing. If you had the same companion since the start of the snow level (or earlier), you will also unlock Companion. Once you have played enough online to meet ten distinct players, you will unlock Wonder.
Step 3: Collectibles & Cleanup
Collect all 10 glyph's for History. collect all 21 symbols for Transcendence.
Do the stage specific requirements for Threshold, Mirage, Explore, Adventure, Trials, Ancestors and Return.
[PS3T Would Like to Thank TigerLust for this Roadmap]
For this trophy, you will need to have at least five symbols collected (which extend your scarf and allows you to jump high enough to accomplish this feat). After you beat the game, you can use chapter select to come back here freely.
On the bridge stage, there are four broken segments. You would ordinarily activate all the cloth pieces to build the bridge, and then glide across. For this trophy however, you want to purposely avoid activating the first cloth, which is directly in the center of the first gap, and only activate the cloth's on either side of the broken bridge. You then double-jump to the top of the first cloth (do NOT hit or you will rebuild the rest of the bridge) and then jump up onto the first broken ledge. Glide across the remainder of the bridge and this will unlock shortly after.
As most online companions will activate the first segment of the bridge, this is the one and only trophy I specifically suggest doing offline.
There are seven sections you will need to free cloth creatures.
This chapter is confusing to navigate. Use the mountain as a reference for North.
I am going to do this in the way I feel is fastest & simplest to navigate.
From when you start on this chapter, walk directly N to cloth 1:
Make a sharp right and go E to Cloth 2:
NW to Cloth 3, directly North of Cloth 1:
W to Cloth 4 and Glyph 2:
NW over ridge to Cloth 5 and Symbol 2:
N to a tower, climb it halfway to find Cloth 6 stuck:
After the meditation circle, you will free the final set of Cloth Creatures: Explore trophy unlocks here if you got all of them.
If you'd like, you can backtrack before jumping on the carpet...
On the Sunken City chapter, you will be sliding down for most of the level. For this trophy, you need to pass inside 15 gates. There are over 20 gates you can pass through in a run, so don't worry if you miss a few. Get a feel for the level, and you can just try it again using chapter select.
Take the left side through some gates:
Go around the giant pillar in the center for some more gates:
Continue to the left for one more gate, then a level area.
After you complete this small area, you will be surfing sand again.
Get the gates in front, then cut hard to the gates on the right:
There will be another batch of gates you can pass through:
That's the end of the gates, Adventure will unlock if you puled it off.
While playing the Underground chapter, early on you will encounter a guardian that has a spotlight beam. If it spots you, it will dive at you and viciously rip off a section of your cape. You should run inside the small hiding places, and run from one to the next directly after it passes. It has a very predictable route thou, so it is quite easy to sneak past it, just by sticking to the left hand side!
At the end of the level, it is very hard to avoid being noticed (it is possible thou). By holding down on your , you will surf down fast to escape and earn this trophy!
On The Temple stage, light up all the glyph's required to progress. Instead of ending the chapter by sitting on the meditation circle, go back down and explore.
Go towards the bottom of the center beam, two flights up for Ancestors:
Or go to the same place you grabbed Symbol 3 & the Glyph:
There may be other creatures as well, feel free to look around.
There are 10 hidden glyph's, view them all across multiple play-through's to unlock this trophy. Note that you must complete that chapter by walking into the meditation circle at the end, then after the cutscene walk thru the new path in order to save your collectible progress. See the collectible guide for full location information.
The chapters with glyph's are:
Portal - 1
Bridge - 1
Desert - 2
Sunken City - 2
Underground - 1
The Temple - 1 (On this chapter, there are some story related glyph's that are required to progress. There is also one hidden glyph that needs to be activated for this trophy.)
Snow - 2
Sky - 0
After you complete the game, you can see which chapters you have collected/missed glyph's on. Simply walk up to each chapter's building, and you will see frames on the wall - one or two frames depending on the amount of glyph's that chapter has. If the glyph is filled in, you collected it. If it's a blank frame, you need to jump into that portal and collect it. There is also one glyph on the chapter itself, see the collectible guide to locate it.
Simply walk up to the stones surrounding the glyph to light them up, which will result in you collecting it.
In order to unlock this trophy, you need to play at least the final two chapters (Snow and Sky) with the same partner, staying relatively close the entire time. There are benefits to touching each other, as it refills both your cape meters, in turn allowing more jump/hang time. You don't need to be touching for the entire chapters, but at least stay within a screen or two distance - the closer the better thou. The most important part is to complete each chapter at the same time (both of you should sit down in the glowing meditation circle at around the same time).
As some people want to do their own thing, or simply leave the game in middle, you might want to get a boosting partner for this. You can find boosting partners here.
"Glitch" warning: The PS3 trophy system can not unlock any trophies while you are syncing your trophies to Sony's servers. This applies to all games, as far as I know. As this trophy unlocks towards the end of the credits, some people have been syncing the trophies during this period, and unfortunately did not obtain Companion, Crossing and Rebirth as a result. Doing the requirements again, without syncing your trophies during credits next time, should unlock them.
The chapters are:
Portal
Bridge
Desert
Sunken City
Underground
The Temple
Snow
Sky
After you complete the game, you can use chapter select at anytime, by pressing followed by .
To meditate, you simply need to stop doing anything. That includes jumping, signaling, or even rotating the screen. The simplest way to accomplish this is by setting down your controller.
As some online partners will understand what you are trying to do, try to express that you aren't exiting the game by jumping and signaling prior to the meditation. I found most people receptive to this, and have personally meditated with at least ten random strangers that "requested" so, and I bet more often than not you will find someone to help you. You can find boosting partners here.
There are a maximum of two travelers (you and one other) at any given moment. If a traveler exits the online game, a new traveler might connect. Over enough time, you will eventually have met enough travelers to unlock this. It doesn't have to be on the same play-through. During the credits at the end, it will list the companions you met during that game. I had met eight travelers during my first online game, and early on my collectible run, this unlocked.
If you want to do this while idle, you can always just put down the controller at the start of a chapter and walk away. A great chapter to "camp" is Sunken City, where travelers will replay several times to get those symbols and the Adventure trophy.
As the trophy description explains, after a week long break from this game, launch it to unlock this trophy.
If you want it quicker (or simply can't keep away for a week ), here is how to get it right away. After having played and the game is done saving, quit the game via XMB, manually set the date quickly by choosing the next year, and then relaunch the game - this will unlock at the main menu. Don't forget to set the date back, you can have the PS3 set it via Internet.
There are 21 unique symbols, collect them all across multiple play-through's to unlock this. Note that you must complete that chapter by walking into the meditation circle at the end, then after the cutscene walk thru the new path in order to save your collectible progress. See the collectible guide for full location information.
As you acquire these symbols, your scarf will extend. The further it extends, the more times you can jump using . You can actually do several jumps in a row to gain a lot of height if you have a long scarf. Each time you jump, the energy of the scarf will fade, thou it will retain the same length. You can refill the energy of the scarf by touching any scarf creatures in the game, some lit up items, and by touching a companion (online).
The chapters with symbols are:
Portal - 3
Bridge - 3
Desert - 4
Sunken City - 3
Underground - 4
The Temple - 4
Snow - 0
Sky - 0
After you complete the game, you can use chapter select to see which chapters you have collected/missed symbols on. Go to the Symbols location on this image:
Lit up stones display collected symbols, while faded stones have not been collected. The picture displayed here is with 19/21 collected, telling me to collect the final two on the Sunken City chapter:
(be sure to stand on the same side in order to have the same perspective)
Once you collect all the symbols, return to the circle I am standing on (above) to acquire the white robe. You can switch costumes freely by revisiting this location. White robes have the scarf energy automatically restored after a brief moment of not using it.
