Pain Builds Character Trophy in inFamous 2

  • Pain Builds Character

Finish the game on hard difficulty.

How to unlock Pain Builds Character

To ensure you unlock this trophy when you attempt to complete the game on hard, follow these steps:

    1. Start a new game, and as soon as you gain control of Cole, press to enter the in-game menu
    2. Go to Options and change the difficulty to Hard
    3. Save, then start another new game
    4. You'll now begin the game automatically on Hard

Note that based on your performance in the game's "tutorial level", if you did extraordinary well, the game will automatically bump you up to Hard. This will not affect you earning the trophy.

On Hard, enemies will generally hit harder and will take many more hits before defeated. In addition, any stunts will earn you less experience compared to Normal/Easy.

    Some tips:

    Good Karma

    • Good karma powers focus on efficiency; an emphasis in taking out enemies quickly with little energy consumption
    • Every time you restore your energy, you'll also automatically heal yourself. That said, focus on purchasing abilities that restores your energy upon use
    • Reaching the Hero Karmic Rank unlocks the passive ability that allows you to restore energy everytime your bolts hit any normal sized enemy; very useful in powered down areas
    • The Frost Shield and the Ice Rockets are your best friends; combine this with the Ionic Vortex and the game becomes a cake walk

    Bad Karma

    • Bad karma powers focus on Area of Effect abilities; an emphasis in hitting multiple opponents with each blast of your powers
    • One of the main advantages of being a bad ass, though you could do this on your Good Karma playthrough regardless, is Bio Leeching. Bio Leeching restores your health and energy to full; again very useful in powered down areas
    • This time around, consider grabbing the Scyth Bolt, Napalm/Double Grenades and the bad karma related Rockets as soon as you can. Again, combine this with the Ionic Vortex and you should have no trouble (not that you were anyway) tackling Hard

There have been reports that this trophy does not unlock properly if you skip the ending credits. If that happens, simply beat the game again (you'll be taken back prior to making your last decision end game) and sit through the credits this time and it should unlock.

  • When i started the game, i was never asked for which difficulity settings i would like to play. I saw the option in the option menu when i was fighting the beast for the first time. Then i Quickly changed it to hard. Is this enough for getting this trophy, anybody please tell me......
  • No, it is not. Just like in the first inFAMOUS, you must complete the entire game one hard without changing the difficulty as per the description.
  • I changed it after the 'tutorial' portion on the small island. recieved the trophy during the final cinematic.
  • wait, so can i get the trophy if i put it on hard after beating the beast? i think thats what specialed said
  • to finish the game on HARD is best on Evil Karma because you can level up faster due to many karma opportunities.
  • Is inFAMOUS 2 on hard is harder than inFAMOUS 1? Hard mode on first inFAMOUS wasn't much a problem, actually...
  • I started playing the game on the second playthrough but forgot to switch it to hard difficulty. Right after I got the first blast core and was trying out my powers the game said that it had adjusted my dificulty up to hard based on my preformance on the last mission. Does anyone know if this would still allow me to get the trophy for beating the whole game on hard or do I need to restart the game and make sure to change it when I am still in Empire City?
  • Replying to Comment #7 by MageMustang the same thing happened to me and I finished it on hard never switching it back and I DID NOT get the trophy. It may work for you but yeah just a heads up.
  • If you start the game in normal, lets say you complete your Good playthru, then before exiting that playthru go to options and select Hard, that way once you start your Bad Karma playthru you'll be in Hard from the very first moment. It is easier to complete the Hard run as Evil because you can attack whatever you want and Bioabsorb anyone as it will give you bad karma but is useful on Blacked-out areas or during some fights where you can't reach a safe energy spot.
  • I just platinumed the game and to do this trophy I switched to Hard difficulty as soon as I jumped off the boat and went to fight the Beast for the first time.
  • I started the game on medium because I forgot to switch it right off the bat, got changed to hard like I was expecting it to, and then beat the game. No trophy. I am really mad. FYI - It's easier to beat it with good karma because of the ice jump and shield. Saves your neck a few times. And the fact that citizens help your rather than try and kill you.
  • I loaded up the game selecting the option given for having completed Infamous 1 with full good karma (had a full bad one as well I could have chosen). When I went to cahnge my difficulty, it was already set at hard, probably from my Infamous 1 settings? I'm about to finish the game and will let you know if it unlocked, but I DID NOT change my difficulty setting at any point in my first play through.
  • #12 i heard we were supposed to get something or other for having all the trophies of infamous 1, which i do, but i didn't get the option you are describing. can you explain more?
  • When you first start the game you get three option. Start new game with good karma from inFAMOUS save Start new game with evil karma from inFAMOUS save Start new game. The only things you get are Good or Evil Trophies: Start InFamous 2 at either Guardian or Thug rank Junior Geologist Trophy: Extra energy core Member of The Mineral Club Trophy: Two Extra energy cores Good Finish Trophy/ Evil Finish Trophy and/or Hard Finish: 1,000 free XP Trophies relating to Karmic Moments i.e Good Eats/ Evil Eats: Slight changes to side missions, dialog, and Dead Drops. • Ok, I just finished it and I was awarded the "Pain Builds Character" trophy.
  • It switched me to hard automatically on my second play through. just beat it. didn't get the trophy. pissed.
  • JAD88: the same...
  • Wish I could give suggestions, but it worked for me exactly as I stated in my earlier posts.
  • It's probably best to treat this like the first game. Evil playthrough on easy/medium first, start a New Game and the second you start controlling Cole, immediately switch to hard, proceed to play Good missions, profit in the form of a gold trophy.
  • @19 Actually I found being evil in both games to be easier. In Infamous 2 Napalm Grenades and Hellfire rockets are superior to their good counterparts because *SPOILER* the second half of the game you are fighting ice enemies. I know it does more damage to the crushers and titans on hard than the ice powers did to them on normal. *END SPOILER* Add in Bio Leech Overload and Ionic Drain. Plus you get more XP when your evil(Bystander, especially on the side mission Playing "Hero" which a good XP farm spot) so you get the abilities sooner. The same can be said about the first game because in both games the evil attacks require less precision and do wide spread damage while the good attacks are precise and little more powerful.
  • When starting the game on hard right away does the pop up still come on after the first mission saying "due to your performance on last mission you have been promoted to hard"? Cause I checked when I got off boat and it said hard. So wondering if it switched to normal and I didn't know
  • @#21 I started my games from "Infamous 1" saves that I had and never got prompted that the game was changing my difficulty. I checked it and it was on hard as soon as I got control of Cole.
  • Same here. When I got control of cole it said hard but after getting first blast core and getting new power the game pop up came up still about hard difficulty. If that happens regadless then I dk what to do cause I started a evil 2nd run on hard but half through I saw these posts about needing to be on hard right away and on that game the same thing happened about prompting me to stay on hard mode making me think it was on normal before when I might've been on hard from start. So I either risk it and finish that run or start from scratch to make sure its on hard
  • I'm starting to think from the info in these posts that I just got lucky then. I was really worried that it wouldn't give it to me after my first good play through, but it popped up. Seems glitchy though.
  • yeah, i had it set to hard before i even loaded up my second playthrough just to be sure and right after i got the blast core, the pop up about playing on hard came up. i really hope i don't get screwed.
  • I started my second play through last night, selecting my continuation of my Infamous 1 evil game, and when I first started to fight the beast, I checked my difficulty level and it was set to hard. I intentionally dropped it down to easy. I have played well past the part where I get my first blast core and NEVER got prompted to change my difficulty or was instructed that it would stay the same. This is the same thing that happened on my first play through except it was set to hard and I never changed it.
  • I forgot to change the difficulty setting to hard until right before you fight the beast in the beginning and I still got the hard trophy, IDK, the game is kinda glitchy anyway
  • Yeah, I've experienced some trophy glitches with InFamous 2. I did my first play through on medium just to have fun. Then, as i did in Infamous 1, I decided to kill two birds with one stone and beat the game on hard AND as a villain. From what I remember, in InFamous 1 I received the promp to change it to hard and when I beat the game, I got the trophy for beating it on hard. I assumed this would work for InFamous 2 but I went all the way to the end and was extremely saddened to find that I didn't get the trophy. Now I need to beat it a third time... oh well.
  • What do you mean "pop-up?" I never saw anything. What I did was start new game, change the difficulty to hard, then start another new game OVER THAT file, and you'll already be on hard before you even get off the boat to fight the beast.
  • #26: If you change your difficulty level manually, you will NEVER get the pop-up.
  • I just beat the game and got the trophy. I switched the game to hard AFTER THE FIRST FIGHT WITH THE BEAST. Right when i first jumped off the boat in New Marais. As long as you switched it to hard before the infamous 2 logo comes up you will get the trophy
  • Well I guess I'm set then! Moving on to "With Great Power Comes Greater Power." That's the only one I'm not sure about...
  • Just to be sure. I changed the difficulty to hard during the opening cutscene right before the tutorial beast fight. Got the trophy. Also. It's best to go good karma for the hard playthrough. Don't know how many times ice launch, frost shield, magnum bolt, bolt stream, and sticky grenade pulled me out of the fire. It's also nice that I can actually stand in the street without getting mobbed by everyone within a 20 meter radius.
  • Evil may actually be easier though because of Ionic Drain and Bio-Leech. It's not bad either.
  • changed it as soon as i arrived in new marais and didnt get it :(
  • I'm on Mission 30 on my second playthrough, which is currently maxed out on evil karma, and I'm playing on hard. I had it set to hard before I got off the boat. For anyone looking for this trophy, please use these tips. They should help, because that's the easiest way, and earliest way to change your difficulty. Please respond, it feels like you're all ignoring me.
  • #35 did you change it when you jump off in the swarm or when you actually got to the city?
  • I changed the difficulty to Hard after my first playthrough, saved, started a new game, checked during the first fight with the Beast and I was on Hard. I got the first blast core, and got a pop-up message stating that I was switching to Hard difficulty based on my performance in the last mission. I'm about half-way through the first island. I am now worried . . .
  • when i started my seconde new game since the it was on hard then at the third level it said that you were promoted on hard. is this good
  • What I like to do is play the first time on medium or easy on good and check the game out wwithout stressing, then play it on evil on hard, because mostly one evil you don't have to take the damage on you. I did this for inFamous1 but I don't know if it works for inFamous 2 still have to play it on evil.
  • this trophie ruined my chance of having platinum. lol
  • WHEN I CONTROLLED COLE FOR THE FIRST TIME I PRESSED START AND CHANGE THE DIFFICULITY TO HARD , I GOT THE PLATINUM LOL !!
  • Thought I'd go for platinum for this game but I am now so pissed cause I played it on hard, except the part before the game itself chose HARD. So after finished the game on hard, and not gotten this trophy, I call it quits. Screw this game and it's wicked game twist that fooled me. GAH!
  • im going for the hard trophy now and i change it as soon as i could control cole. according to everyone else i should be fine. we'll see. if im not ill be so mad...
  • try to change the difficulty as soon as possible, in one of the first video's in the game is pressed start and could directly change it to hard.
  • To get this trophy I decided to play on the evil karma path. I think being good would have made it easier. The good path has better powers, in my opinion.
  • @rodge Sorry dude
  • borowed the game from a friend, got every trophy exept for this one and good finish the i finsh on hard( it said baised on my performance in earlier mission at the start) then didn't get it!!! >:(
  • Found this easier to get playing Evil. THough I liked the powers better for hte good side. Story wise at the end Evil was easier.
  • Can confirm 100%, If you start the game while continuing on from any Infamous 1 Save, if you change to hard as soon as you get control of Cole this trophy will be valid. Just did it on easy and to be honest.... its a piece of the proverbial if you just spam rockets on Good ;)
  • Nugget, I meant to say just did this on Hard and it was easy to do ;) open mouth insert foot....
  • at the start of the game just change to hard and start a new game after changing, the hard dificulty will be set right from the start of the new game, do it just in case. have fun infamous 2 - platinum #11
  • i have walked the game on the hard setting , but yet my trophy for completing on hard still didn't come up ,, it's the only one other than the platinum !!! DOING MY HEAD IN !!!
  • I set the game to hard, then restarted. I checked the difficulty as soon as I got control and it was set to hard. After the the first mission in new marais a message popped up to say I had been promoted to hard difficulty because I had played well. I hope this doesn't mean for some reason the first part of the game wasn't on hard!
  • @#2 False. I did like 2 or 3 missions and then noticed I wasnt on hard difficulty then switched over.
  • Really easy, did this on my first play through like the first one.
  • For me, beating Hard Mode on inFamous 1 was way easier on the evil path than on the good path. Is it the same for inFamous 2 or is it the other way around?
  • Hard mode on both inFamous games isn't much of a challenge.
  • I personally found playing Hard along the Evil track far easier than Normal on Good. It may be because I knew how to play at that point, but it seems to me the baddies fall much, much faster than they did before. Plus, Drain is quite lovely.
  • Funny how nobody answered the question that so many of you ave asked. Like some of you i started the game on hard (checked it right from the start) and still got the pop-up. So i'll ask again: Will i get the trophy or not?
  • To answer my own question... I got the trophy :)
  • It's easier than first Infamous, which was easy on hard.
  • What if I got the notice, that the difficulty was changed according to my performance (i got it although the difficulty was set to hard from the very beginning)? Does it mean I shouldn't continue, because I won't get the trophy, or I can play? Does that matter?
  • @63 it says that regardless of wht difficulty you started on if you preformed well. even if you start on hard. as for continuing. idk. im on the 6th mission now
  • Here's what I did... I completed it on easy, playing as GOOD. When I completed the game, I cleaned up some trophies (dead drops, blast shards, etc) only leaving me to get the bad trophies. I then changed the difficulty to hard WHILE STILL PLAYING MY FIRST GAME. I then started a new game. This meant that when I started, it was already set to hard. Hope that helps some of you! :)
  • Just be sure to change the difficulty to hard as soon you see Cole on the ship wih Zeke, the very first cutscene, and you're golden.
  • I changed to hard before I started my 2nd run through. It notified me it was changing the difficulty to hard when I first got into town, but it was already on hard. I got the trophy anyway, but I was a little worried.
  • When playing evil on hard, why does it seem really hard becuase on infamous 1 it was really easy but on this one it seem likes theres no cover anywhere, you get hit 2-3 times and you die, people blast you into the water all the time and just has a generally crap story line
  • I just accepted its turnover to hard, and no trophy... I'm really upset.
  • On normail right now, can't wait for hard. Awesome game
  • It was tough to beat it normal, i can just imagine it on hard...
  • Fucking bullshit... I set this to hard and finished the game thinking it was on it still. Trophy didn't pop and checked the difficulty settings... realised it's somehow reverted back to easy. Piece of shit game.
  • I hate the glitch on this trophy.
  • Finally got this trophy! Yay platinum number 6!
  • Finished the game on hard twice now.. Still no trophie!! Thnx Suckerpunch! Never getting the Plat for this one.. I´dd like to Suckerpunch you
  • i started hard on evil once i got in new marais and beat the story and no trophy, do u need to beat the side missions as well to get trophy
  • advice (at least worked for infamous 1) start a game and set it to hard. Restart a new game, it will stick on hard from the last selection. You should recieve it finally...
  • My second playthrough was one of the automatic switching over to hard difficulty and not receiving a trophy kind. I feel that Infamous could've been improved if they had only included a start menu.
  • Will i get the trophy if I start from inFAMOUS save data?
  • This is real easy especially if you have the electrocution grenade (dlc) 'cause all you hoave to do is drain power from it whenever you're low and it still counts.
  • @79 No you need to go into the menu and physically change it. I ended up changing mine after I fought the beast for the first time and I still got the trophy. However this does not seem to be the case with everyone. Follow the advise of the trophy guide to ensure you get it. Either way you will still get the bonuses for playing the first inFamous game which is actually based on your trophy information, not your save data.
  • its much easier on evil gameplay :)
  • I still have to play this title on hard, but I think I'll do it as a bad guy, 'cause it will be much easier as you don't have to protect anyone and can destroy everything :D
  • Wish i would have read this sooner. Just finished hard playthrough a few minutes ago and did NOT receive my trophy. I went by the game putting me in hard for my performance on the first mission. Guess I have to beat it all over again >.
  • Surpsingly I've found it easier to kill enemies on hard with evil cole than on easy with good cole. Especially the ravagers and crushers. I haven't fought an ice titan yet though. One of the early missions took me forever to beat on hard. The one where you're riding a truck after saving Dr. Wolfe.
  • Gah, I finished the game on hard, but I didn't know it had to be started as hard. Oh well, I guess I'll have to play through it a third time.
  • Almost got it
  • This is not as difficult as inFamous 1
  • To all peeps new here. It's best to watch the ending credits completely.
  • @ #71 Yimmy, no offense, but if you thought this game was already tough on normal, you realy shouldn't be playing videogames. Infamous games are one of the easiest games to play, even on hard difficulty
  • @72..... same thing just happened to me, I'm so damn pissed right now, wasted 5 days... played this the first time on normal a couple years ago, now I decided to replay it on hard to get the Plat, and to refresh my memory before I play Festival of Blood and then First Son on PS4. I did the new game, change setting, then new game again and I'm damn sure I started on Hard... and I'm damn sure I didn't touch it since then. Beat the game and no trophy.... check the difficulty setting and it's ON EASY!!! WHAT THE FRACK?!? lol :(I thought things had gotten easier at some point but it didnt' dawn on me...... I thought I had just gotten used to the controls again heh.
  • I just got the Infamous 2 Platinum.. *Sigh of relief* it took me 2 days and 10 hours. the auto collect for the Blast Shards was awesome. Infamous 2 is an easyish game to Platinum. Asassins Creed 4 will be my 7th Platinum Trophy.. i got 1 Trophy left in SR4 (PS3) until i get the SR4 Platinum Trophy and that Trophy is the 40 Hour Trophy.. but y'know.. my Platinum Trophy difficulty: 4.5/10 Infamous 2 is a bit glitchy but not as glitchy as Infamous 1.
