Introduction:

Welcome to Dragon's Lair - a vintage classic retelling of a wildly popular animated laser disc arcade game originally created in the 1980's by renowned creator/animator Don Bluth. Dragon's Lair has been remastered in High Definition for PSN and the game simply looks stunning. The gameplay/storyline is told via beautifully hand animated storyboarded sequences in which you control Dirk the Daring on his adventures to rescue the captive Princess Daphne from the hideous Dragon.

However, Dragon's Lair isn't quite your ordinary game that makes full use of the Dualshock controller. The controls are very simplistic in nature and executed via , , , (Dirk's directional movements) and presses (Dirk's sword attack). In a manner of speaking though, you don't actually control the main hero of this tale but rather you press the correct buttons at the precise moments according to what action(s) are needed in any given scene, and in return Dirk performs the pre-rendered/animated action in the scene. And to help the player know whether or not he/she got the timing correct, Dragon's Lair has a well known famous "beep" sound which lets you know the move was successful. Actions input at the wrong time or simply incorrect for the requirements of the scene give off a distinct low-pitched 'thump' sound. You'll know the difference between the two sounds very early on.

Granted, everything in the game is based on being accurate with your timing. One false move in the wrong direction could easily kill Dirk just the same so take your time and try to memorize the movement requirements for Dirk in each individual areas and you'll master the game in no time. Moreover, the pathways and directions in which you're recommended to take are often times briefly lit up by a flash of light (sometimes yellow, blue or purple, etc). These can help your sense of direction in scenes where the obvious solution might not be so obvious. Conversely, there are a few scenes where you aren't given a noticeable direction to go but must input the correct action(s)s in order to succeed.

Dragon's Lair will most likely require lots of practice and repetition. Trial and error is also something you should expect as you learn and memorize all of Dirk's movements. But in any event, whether you're new to Dragon's Lair or a seasoned veteran to this classic, this beautifully animated game will undoubtedly provide a unique experience that you'll want to enjoy again and again.

Walkthrough:

Note: So far, my own experiences have revealed to me that Dragon's Lair trophies are not retroactive and do not stack. As such it seems that a playthrough is needed for each trophy. I've notated this in the Overview however if the information changes or needs to be updated, I'll adjust that accordingly. The good thing though is that the actual start-to-finish times are really short and shouldn't take you that long at all to complete.

Step 1: Watch the Tutorial and Game (For players who are new to Dragon's Lair)

For many players this will be the first time experiencing the game and therefore the learning curve may be a little steep. As such it wouldn't be a bad idea to select the "Tutorial" feature before trying Dragon's Lair for the first time. The Tutorial, though, isn't very in depth. It explains what you need to do with the , , , and buttons (sword) but overall it's a short viewing.

Next you should "Watch Game". Doing this will enable you to see Dirk's adventure through the entire castle leading up to the final boss fight against the Dragon. Keep in mind though that viewing the game in this mode wont actually show you the precise D-Pad movements for Dirk or when to press the button for his sword but at least you'll be able to see when he does those things in relation to the area(s) he's in. After watching the entire game you'll have a good idea of what you need to do but you'll still have some trial and error on the timing of each action.

Step 2: Unlock the Easy trophies

I wont get into too much detail on the actual trophy requirements here in the Road Map since that's covered in the Trophy Guide. The easiest trophy in Dragon's Lair to unlock is the Hidden trophy "Bumbling Knight". All you have to do is purposely do the incorrect moves for each of your lives in a new game and the trophy will unlock. Simple. Next, the "Save Me!" trophy should be your first priority since your main focus will be to complete the game on Easy without altering any of the modes/settings. You'll still have to learn all of Dirk's movement requirements for each of the castle rooms/areas but the overall gameplay length on Easy is shorter than on Hard. The final boss sequence is also a tad shorter on Easy than on Hard (by a few movements).

Since Dragon's Lair isn't retroactive on trophies you'll have to play the game on Easy again for the "Master Knight", "Singe Attack" and "Flawless". It's possible to simply reload a save file and beat the final boss again for a different trophy but that will be dependant on the specific trophy you're working on and conditions of your game when you last saved.

Step 3: Unlock the Hard trophies

Once you get to this point and have earned the Easy trophies then you probably have the game memorized by now, or at least have a respectable handle on the gameplay sequences. "Valiant Adventurer", "Dragon Slayer" and "Lair King" will be your goals during this step.

The gameplay on Hard mode is much faster than on Easy. Certain scenes have had the 'introduction' to them removed and get right to the moment where the actions are immediately required. You'll have to be on your toes and focused in order to successfully complete Hard mode. D-Pad and sword actions ( button) timings are also much more strict in terms of accuracy. Lastly, certain rooms of the castle now have a few extra movements required (including the final boss fight) whereas in Easy mode they weren't necessary.

Note: Be sure and save your game often if you're having a rough time learning the scenes and/or completing the game. If you die you can always reload a save file and start where you left off rather than at the beginning of the game again. Also, many trophies require you to go to Settings and change and/or alter certain perks in order to unlock them. Be mindful of making these changes as you work on each trophy as the requirements vary with each of them. It should also be mentioned that "Valiant Adventurer" must be unlocked in Arcade mode. The rest of the trophies can be unlocked in either Arcade or Home modes (even though Home mode is for obtaining PlayStation Home items).

Also, you can expect to see repeated scenes as you play through the game, but reversed. This is quite normal so don't think your game has glitched or some such.

For a step-by-step walkthrough of every scene in the game, please check the walkthrough in the forums: Dragon's Lair Walkthrough.

[PS3T Would Like to Thank Yoshi_Girl for this Roadmap]

Save Me!
Beat the game on any mode.

This should be unlocked after the "Bumbling Knight" trophy. You'll be required to complete new game in it's entirety (kill the Dragon) in order to obtain this trophy, so it's best to play through an Easy game on either Arcade or Home mode. At first though, expect a little trial and error. It's a good idea to save your gave frequently so you can reload a previous save file. This will especially come in handy for some of the trickier trophy requirements.

Valiant Adventurer
Beat the game on hard, arcade mode.

To acquire this trophy you'll need to beat the game on Hard & Arcade mode. Go to "Play Game" then select "Arcade Mode" then select "Hard". Completing the game with this setup will unlock the trophy.

Master Knight
Beat the game on easy, no move guide, 5 lives mode.

This trophy isn't as hard as it might seem at first. Once you've played through the game a few times with the on-screen D-Pad you'll eventually memorize when Dirk's movements are required in any given scene. As such, you wont have too much trouble working on this trophy without the on-screen D-Pad. Just take your time and practice.

Before starting a game for this trophy go to "Settings", then select "Move Guide" then select "Off". Press the "Back" button and then select "Lives". Press "Five". Now go all the way back to the main menu and select either "Arcade" or "Home" mode then press "Easy". Just complete the game with these settings and the trophy should unlock upon defeating the Dragon.

Singe Attack
Beat the game in 3 lives, any mode.

It's possible to unlock this trophy in various modes but I personally obtained this in Arcade mode on Easy with Lives set to 3. I played a perfect game (no deaths) and when I got to the final boss fight against the Dragon I allowed myself to get killed once. I then completed the game and then after the credits the trophy popped.

Flawless
Beat the game without dying, any mode except infinite lives.

This trophy will require you to have a solid grasp of the gameplay dynamics for Dragon's Lair. At this point you'll need to have memorized each of Dirk's movements for all of the castle animation sequences. But by the time you've played the game a few times and have beaten it you'll be quite comfortable with what you've memorized and this trophy will probably come naturally over a short period of time.

To unlock this trophy, you can use any mode in any difficulty except "Infinite" so don't select that prior to beginning the game.

Dragon Slayer
Beat the game on hard, no move guide, 3 lives mode.

You'll need to be a seasoned player in order to beat Dragon's Lair under these conditions. As mentioned in the Road Map, Hard mode is faster paced and has longer storyboard sequences throughout the entire playthrough. Even the final boss fight against the Dragon has a few extra movement requirements.

It might take a few attempts to aquire this trophy but just practice your timing and , , , , and accuracies and you shouldn't have too much trouble. I think with most people, completing the fight against the Dragon on Hard will take the most attempts. The fight itself isn't too long but it's fast-paced once things get going.

Lair King
Get the highest possible score (427,469).

This trophy requires you to play Arcade mode on Easy. The key is getting the absolute most points from the game so this includes ensuring that certain extended scenes are played fully and accurately. It's a good idea to save your game right before each falling platform sequences so that if it's not an extended scene you can reload your game and keep going. Arcade mode on Easy provides bonus points in certain animation scenes that are otherwise unavailable in Home Easy mode.

  • You MUST play on Arcade Easy mode with five lives. Hard mode is missing a single point-awarding scene (the first whirlpool), and Home mode does not award you the 49-point starting bonus for the first scene. Three lives is not enough to get max points. This is actually true to the original arcade, and I am extremely surprised at the accuracy in this version.
  • On the falling elevator scenes, you must jump on the LAST POSSIBLE bridge to get maximum points. Keep in mind that two of the four scenes have NINE possible jumping locations (bridges). (Three of the four scenes start you facing left, and one of those continues after the first three bridges. The scene that starts you facing right ALWAYS has nine bridges.)
  • When you get to Singe's Lair, play your first four lives missing the last possible input, which is the Sword button after pressing up to dodge Singe's tail. On your last life, complete the game, and you should have the max score if you did everything right.

The idea is to make sure you're not inadvertently missing the extended scenes (9 exit sections instead of 3). These will happen randomly so it's important to save your game before each platform scene so you can either reload your game if it's NOT an extended scene or do the platform sequence hopping off ONLY at the very last (9th) section for maximum points. This is done for each of the 4 platform scenes.

Lastly, here's a link to a nice detailed Dragon's Lair Scoring Chart so you can tell how each scene/sequence awards points.

Secret Trophies

Bumbling Knight
Never make a correct move in a new game.

This is the easiest trophy in the game and takes a whole 60 seconds to unlock. Obtaining it can be done in any game mode but the fastest would be just to set your Lives at 3, start a new game, then purposely do the wrong moves for each of your lives. You could simply do nothing at all rather than do incorrect actions and it will still count. The trophy will unlock during the last death animation.

Thanks to Boilerfan for posting the information about this Hidden trophy.
