Guide By: Mitsuru Kirijo There are 36 Trophies that can be earned in this title. |
Show / Hide Guide Road Map Overview: -Estimated trophy difficulty: 4 (personal estimate) -Offline: (35) 1 5 7 22 -Online: (1) 1 -Approximate amount of time to : 15-20 hours -Minimum number of playthroughs needed: 2 -Number of missable trophies: 0 -Glitched trophies: 0 -Does difficulty affect trophies?: Yes - the game must be completed on Hard difficulty -Do cheat codes disable trophies?: No known cheats Introduction In Blades of Time you play as Ayumi, a treasure hunter trapped in a strange and dangerous land; searching for a way home, Ayumi finds that she may be heading towards her own unsuspected destiny... Blades of Time revolves around very visceral combat that encompasses brutal melee fighting, shooting, and magic; the game also has some light platforming and puzzle elements. Step One: Normal difficulty playthrough There are no difficulty options when you first start the game; a New Game begins on Normal by default, and the only way to change the difficulty is to quit to the menu, go into chapter select and adjust the difficulty there. However, in order to unlock the trophies for finding all of the treasure chests on both Normal and Hard difficulties you're going to have to play the game twice - these trophies don't stack - so it's recommended that you play the game on Normal first. Another reason to do this is that all of your equipment will carry over to a Hard playthrough via chapter select, and enemies do so much damage on Hard that you're going to be grateful for the extra help. Be mindful of the trophies Your Fire Is Nothing and Too Hot For You (both of which require you to defeat enemies without taking damage from certain attacks); and, if you choose to farm the end of chapter 9 for the Double Attack and Rain of Bullets trophies, you should unlock all trophies during this one playthrough except for Treasure Hunter, Hard Times Are Over, and the four trophies related to the game's extra Outbreak mode. Step Two: Hard difficulty playthrough Replay the game on hard difficulty via chapter select. All treasure chests will be reactivated and restocked on this playthrough, and you're going to have to find them all again for the corresponding trophy. Step Three: Outbreak mode There are four trophies related to the game's extra Outbreak mode, one of which will require you to play online. The trophy in question is easy enough to achieve, but it may be difficult to find anyone online; if this is the case you can try to find some help through this site's boosting thread for the game: Trophy Boosting Thread. Otherwise, the remaining three trophies are achievable against the AI; for a strategy on how to win an Outbreak match against the AI, see the trophy description for Unstoppable. A word about gameplay The game has a couple of mechanics that might take some time to get used to, and because there really isn't a particular trophy that would require me to explain them, I'll just say a word about them here. The first is the health system of the game: you have a health bar, and once it's depleted you die; unusually for this type of game, though, if you avoid damage for long enough your health bar will replenish. In addition to this, you have the option of healing yourself by pressing if you have a health usage available to you. The way the healing option works is a bit odd: you will always have one healing usage available to you, but using it means that it will require time to recharge; also, as you hit enemies with your melee attacks, your magic gauge fills up; if you don't cast an attack spell within a certain amount of time, the magic you've accumulated in your gauge will be converted into another healing usage and your magic meter will drain; you can only have three healing usages available to you at one time, but if you keep filling your magic meter and not casting spells, those healing usages will continue to replenish (there will be a green + above your HUD indicating the number of healing usages you have available to you). The second thing I'll note is the way your magic gauge works: there are three magic seals on your gauge, each represented by a red skull; hit enemies with melee attacks to fill your magic gauge (it turns yellow as it's filled); fill the first gauge to use the basic form of a spell (Ice, Ignition, Heavy Strike), and fill the second gauge in order to use the "massive" version of those spells (provided you've unlocked them). Until you acquire the Rage Saving ability from the altars you will find throughout the game, a single spell will deplete your entire magic gauge. So, if you have a full magic gauge - all three seals are yellow - and you cast a regular Ice spell, your entire gauge will be depleted even though the regular form of a spell should only deplete a single gauge. Rage Saving allows you to cast multiple spells with a single magic gauge; in other words: acquire Rage Saving and a normal spell will only deplete a single gauge of a full bar, allowing you to cast multiple usages of it; without Rage Saving the normal form of a spell will use as much of the gauge as a massive version of the same spell - that is to say, the entire gauge. Because of this, it is strongly recommended that you choose to acquire Rage Saving from the altar as soon as it becomes available.

 | Platinum | |
| Awarded for successfully collecting all trophies. | |
Self-explanatory; unlock all other trophies to unlock this, the game's platinum trophy. |
 | Too Hot For You | |
| Kill Brutal Maul without being frozen by his shockwave. | (1) |
In Chapter 8, Brutal Lands, you'll have a Chaos event right at the start of the level and immediately after that be introduced to the Brutal Maul enemy: they are armoured knights that carry an enormous hammer with which they can unleash a freezing shockwave with a massive area of effect (and this is the move you must avoid). When you first encounter Brutal Maul there will be two of them: one visible in front of you and one out of sight to the left; the one in front of you can be shot from distance with a rifle - he won't move towards you and it's easy to figure out the range of his shockwave so that it won't reach you; if you go left, there's a little elevated shelf around the structure in the middle of the room which you can perch on and shoot the other Brutal Maul without being hit with his attack - equip a rifle and go for many headshots. Do not try to get this trophy in melee combat - it's nearly impossible to keep an eye on both Brutal Mauls at once, so inevitably you'll be hit with an attack if you rush into them; content yourself with shooting one of them for trophy purposes, then proceed with as much reckless abandon as you want. |
 | Brutal Kill | |
| Kill 5 enemies at the same time. | |
Please see the trophy for Annihilation Kill |
 | Annihilation Kill | |
| Kill 10 enemies at the same time. | |
Getting 10 kills at once will also unlock the trophy for getting 5 kills at once, but, frankly, there really isn't a good place to do this in the story mode; 5 kills can be achieved in one of the handful of trials that you use to practice a few of the skills you unlock from altars in the game (specifically the trials for Earthquake or any of the "massive" versions of spells: Ignition, Freeze, Heavy Strike), but it can be tricky because you usually won't get more than 6 enemies onscreen at one time; during the final level, Dragon Temple, there will be a couple of instances where you'll have the necessary amount of enemies onscreen at the same time but it's very tricky to get them to group together in order to kill 10 at once. The better option is to do this is in an Outbreak match: absorb enough Chi to unlock the "massive" category of spells: Massive Freeze, Massive Ignition, Massive Heavy Strike; make sure you don't take out any enemy outposts so that there is something to keep your own troops busy/kill them off (to keep them from getting kills you're after), then do one of two things: either let the enemy overrun your forces - simply stay by your base and wait for the enemy forces to come to you -; or run on ahead to the enemy base in order to intercept a group and get first crack at any respawning groups; once you're up against a substantial enough force, melee attack enough to fill your magic gauge and unleash a massive attack - the most effective thing to do is to use either a regular fire/ice spell and follow it up instantly with a massive heavy strike (note that you'll need the Rage Saving ability to pull off 2 consecutive magic attacks). Outbreak also has the added virtue of immediately informing you of how many enemies you hit with any of your "massive" attacks, thereby giving you a sense of how to develop a strategy for getting this done if you're having trouble. |
 | Famous Hunter | |
| Kill 1000 enemies in total. | |
Self-explanatory; die frequently during the game and this should come towards the end of your first playthrough as all kills are recorded, even when you die; die infrequently and this will have to be unlocked during your hard playthrough: your statistics will carry over to your second playthrough via chapter select. It's worth pointing out that any enemies you kill in Outbreak will also contribute towards this trophy. |
 | Faster Than You! | |
| Use Counterattack 100 times. | |
A counterattack occurs when you are about to be struck by an enemy attack and appears over top of the attacking enemy, giving you a brief window of time to counter the attack: hold the in the direction of the enemy and press to succesfully counter. Only certain enemies give you the opportunity to counter their attacks, and these tend to be slow, heavy enemies: Brutal Zombie Heavy, Brutal Zombie Fighter, Tribal Zombie Heavy, Tribal Zombie Fighter, and Humans wielding large swords. It should be noted that the same combination - + - is also used to perform finishing moves on weakened enemies: finishing moves are not the same as counters and will not contribute to this trophy; counterattacks are non-lethal, so if you do an move that results in the death of an enemy, it will not count as a counterattack. Frequent deaths will probably net you this by the end of the game; if not, the best place to farm counters for this trophy is in the final room of the ninth chapter, Brutal Town: it's a large room inside the castle, and when you enter it the first time there will be several Chaos Observers you'll have to deal with; killing all of them triggers a new wave that includes a couple of Brutal Zombie Heavies and several Brutal Zombie Fighters - each of these enemies will offer you multiple chances at counterattacks and the checkpoint is right at the start of this wave, so take out all but a single enemy, then let that enemy kill you in order to restart the wave. |
 | Grasshopper | |
| Use Dash 30 times without touching the ground. | |
There are a couple of places you can do this more or less organically: against the Shaman Boss at the end of chapter 2, Jungle, or against the Brutal Lich enemies you'll encounter at the broken bridge in chapter 8, Brutal Lands, or against the Vicar of Chaos at the end of chapter 8; in each of these instances there will be several corals for you to dash to (hold to target the coral, to dash to it), and in the instances of the two boss fights the corals will encircle the arena, thus facilitating easy movement between them. The problem with the Shaman Boss is that going in a complete circle will result in you dashing to the boss and landing on the bridge, and the somewhat sluggish movement speed of the camera makes it tricky to go back and forth between the corals in this location; against the Vicar of Chaos, there's simply a good chance that he will hit you with an attack that will knock you to the ground while you're trying to do this; so, if you're going to try to do this in either of these locations, make sure to do it after you've killed the boss. You can do this anywhere, though: simply make use of any location with a handful of corals gathered together - of which there will be several throughout the game - that you can dash back and forth between; and remember that it just needs to be done 30 times consecutively, not with 30 different corals (there is no such place in the game): clear an area of enemies and work on doing this at your leisure. |
 | Curious | |
| Find half the notes. | |
This will unlock after finding 16 notes; please see Collector for more information. |
 | Collector | |
| Find all the notes. | |
Notes emit a tremendous glow of light and, if you're looking in their direction, are impossible not to notice; having said that, there are a couple that you will have to go out of your way to find, but, luckily, those instances are the exceptions. There are 31 notes to be found across the 10 chapters of the game and this trophy will unlock once you've found all of them. Click here - Blades of Time Collectibles Guide - for a complete collectible guide. |
 | Ready To Fight | |
| Find all types of equipment. | |
There are 4 types of equipment in the game: Swords, Rifles, Rings, and Amulets; each piece of equipment gives Ayumi a different buff to at least one of her abilities, and those buffs are stackable. You will acquire each type of equipment very early in the game, but this trophy won't unlock until the third chapter, Human Base, when you find the Machine Gun in a treasure chest; the reason for this is the word "find" in the trophy description: this means acquiring the piece of equipment by finding it in a chest; you'll actually acquire a rifle in the first chapter of the game, but because it wasn't "found" it won't count towards this trophy. |
 | Unstoppable | |
| Win any Outbreak match. | |
This can be done against AI controlled enemies in the mode Outbreak Single, which is basically a conquest type of mode: both sides spawn on opposing sides of the map from a base, and each side has an equal number of outposts in the middle of the field; the goal is to progress to the other side of the map, destroying the enemy forces, outposts, and, ultimately, their base. You get to choose a handful of abilities at the start of the match, and each time you die your collected Chi will allow you to buy more abilities. Also, you have an army to help you along that will respawn over time, but you have to be careful with your own deaths and respawns: too many of them and you'll start to lose outposts at your base, the ability to spawn fighters and, ultimately, the match. Outbreak can be pretty challenging if you decide to just run headlong into everything; but there is a very easy way to win a match against the AI: for your three abilities at the start of the match, choose Earthquake, Heavy Strike, and Ayumi's evade move; when you spawn, let your troops move on ahead of you so that they will arrive at the first enemy outposts ahead of you - they'll immediately start attacking the outposts and be targeted by the outposts' magic missiles. At this point, if you don't attack an outpost yourself it won't target you because of how many of your troops are attacking them. Move past your troops and intercept enemy forces - make sure you're out of range (and stay out of range) of outpost attacks and take out the enemy forces by yourself. Earthquake (press then hold down + ) requires no magic in order to be used so abuse it frequently; if you're taking a lot of damage press in order to activate Ayumi's auto-evade - half of all attacks will miss her for a time; once you've got magic in your meter start unleashing Heavy Strikes, spam Earthquake if you risk being overrun, and always stay ahead of your own troops. The strategy here is pretty simple: if you're always ahead of your own troops, the enemies will stop to attack you, and this allows your troops to work on the outposts without being distracted. Obviously, this requires you to defeat all opposing enemies yourself, but with the difficulty on normal, being out of range of outpost attacks, and being familiar with the controls should make this pretty easy. Once all the outposts have been destroyed, move on to the enemy base. There are two more outposts there, and you're going to have to work on them from afar - let your troops run up to them, provide support by shooting from a distance (make sure to have the Old Wars Rifle equipped - it does the most damage per shot of any rifle and you can fire it while moving; personally, I find Machine Guns are useless in Outbreak because you can't move while firing them). Once the enemy ranks have thinned, run in to get some attacks on the outposts, then retreat to give your health time to restore. Doing this for a while will whittle down the health of the final outposts, leaving the base defenseless - get in there and destroy it. One final note on Outbreak: Story mode items can be used in Outbreak, and any items you acquire in Outbreak can be used in Story mode; make sure to equip your character to suit your style of play before the match starts - I find that any equipment that gives you health or speed buffs are particularly useful for this mode. |
 | Out of My Way | |
| Kill an enemy player in an Outbreak match. | (3) |
This is the only trophy of that game that needs to be done online. Straightforward enough: play a Vs. match against another human player, find that player on the battlefield, and kill them. You have to be the one to deliver the finishing blow for this trophy to unlock - if the enemy player is killed by your troops or one of your outposts it will not count as your kill. It might prove to be difficult finding someone to play against online, so if you would like to find someone to assist you in getting this trophy, you can try your luck with posting your details in the boosting thread for the game: Trophy Boosting Thread. |
 | Outbreak Hero | |
| Kill each Outbreak boss at least once. | |
There are 6 bosses in Outbreak, and the game will let you know when a new boss or enemy type has appeared; the bosses are: Blaster (this is Brutal Maul from the Story mode) Invisible Assassin (this is Chaos Slasher from the Story mode) Chaos Monster (in the mass of Chaos Monsters that come for you, one is considered the "boss" - just make sure to kill them all) Giant Spider (I've gotten boss awards for killing both the Giant Poisonous Spider and the regular silver Spider, so I do recommend making sure to kill them both) Skyguard (this is the Skyguard Commander from chapters 4 and 7 of the Story mode) Shaman (this is the Shaman Boss from chapters 2 and 9 of the Story mode). All of the bosses will spawn over time, but the Shaman seems to have some kind of mercurial requirement that I admit is completely beyond my ability to figure out - out of around 10 matches split between Brutal Lands and Jungle (avoid Desert like the plague), he spawned roughly half the time, seemingly without any rhyme or reason: he appeared when I died more than 5 times, when I hadn't died at all, when I had only one outpost left, when I had all outposts left, about 5 minutes into a match, about 15 minutes into a match...The only advice I can give for getting him to spawn is to keep playing until he does. As with killing a human player, you must be the one to actually defeat the bosses in order for it to count as your kill: bosses killed by your troops or outposts do not count towards this trophy. |
 | Experienced | |
| Play 5 Outbreak matches. | |
Another self-explanatory trophy: simply play Outbreak 5 times; 5 matches against the AI will do the job, and you don't have to win them or even accomplish a single thing in them - the match simply needs to be completed in order for your progress to be saved. I will point out, though, that any new items you may be rewarded with in Outbreak can be used in the Story mode of the game, which might prove helpful to anyone looking for a bit of extra help going into a Hard difficulty playthrough.

| Find all the chests in story mode on the Normal difficulty level. | |
Please see Treasure Hunter for more information. |
 | Treasure Hunter | |
| Find all the chests in story mode on the Hard difficulty level. | (1) |
Ayumi carries a compass in the game; pressing activates "compass mode"; in this mode, a yellow triangle will indicate the direction you need to travel in order to continue with the story; if there is also a red triangle present, that means there is a chest nearby; the red triangle will spin in circles when you're next to the chest; at a certain point in chapter 2, Jungle, all chests until the end of the game will henceforth be invisible, and Ayumi will have to cast an order spell - press - while next to each chest in order to reveal it. When not in "compass mode", the compass can be seen hanging from Ayumi's belt; if it starts emitting a blue light, that's your indication that there is a chest nearby, and you should activate your compass in order to try and find it. There are 22 chests to be found across the 10 chapters of the game and, yes, they do indeed have to be found on both difficulty levels; while some might see this as an ordeal, the boon to this is that you will find new and better gear the second time around (provided you played on Normal first). Also, the chests will appear in the exact same locations on both difficulties, so a single guide will be enough for locations on both difficulties. And to see that guide, click here: Blades of Time Collectibles Guide. |
 | Double Attack | |
| Kill 25 heavy enemies using the Time Rewind double attack. | |
The time rewind double attack can only be done against certain enemies: Brutal Mauls, Brutal Zombie Heavies, and Skyguard Heavy Infantry (the giant guys with the backpack that regenerates their health; and it's questionable that they actually count, seeing as how you only use your Time Rewind to disable their backpacks, not to actually kill them). This is how the time rewind double attack works: do enough damage to the enemy and you'll get an prompt above that enemy; hitting makes you jump on the enemy and you'll then get a prompt - tap and Ayumi will start to pound on the enemy until he shakes her off; once Ayumi has been shaken off, hold down to rewind time until you see Ayumi's "clone" jump onto the enemy and start doing that pound move, let go of , and if you're close enough to the enemy you'll get another prompt - your "clone" will jump off the enemy as you jump onto him, and this will result in the finishing move that is required for this trophy. Even with frequent deaths you will probably not get this by the end of the game; statistics do carry over via chapter select, and you will probably get this during your second playthrough, but there is a place where you can easily farm these kills if you want to, and that place is the final room of the ninth chapter, Brutal Town: it's a large room inside the castle, and when you enter it the first time there will be several Chaos Observers you'll have to deal with; killing all of them triggers a new wave that includes a couple of Brutal Zombie Heavies and several Brutal Zombie Fighters - this move can only be done against the Brutal Zombie Heavies, of which there will be two; once you've killed both of them, let yourself die and the checkpoint will restart. |
 | Angry | |
| Kill 100 enemies during your Time Rewind Berserk buff. | |
Any time you're attacking enemies - either melee attacks or shooting attacks - you can hold down until you see another Ayumi appear onscreen; let go of and you will have another Ayumi onscreen attacking the target you've been attacking; as the "time rewind" function winds down, your screen will start to go a deep red colour, and it is during these moments that your "Berserk" buff is active - if the enemy you're fighting dies during this buff, the kill will count towards the trophy. There really isn't a need to farm this as it will come with time, and it will be very helpful to you on your hard playthrough to make extensive use of this ability in combination with your machine gun to help thin out groups of monsters, especially heavies - multiple Ayumis firing machine guns into mobs will make quick work of even the most difficult situations. |
 | Rain of Bullets | |
| Shoot off Magic Armor from 50 enemies using Time Rewind clones. | (3) |
Enemies with magic armour will have a red bubble around them; they cannot be harmed while the armour is active, and it can only be destroyed by "fast shooting" - having more than one Ayumi onscreen and peppering the target with bullets. Have a machine gun equipped, start unloading into the target, and after you've put a third or more of a clip into him hold down until another Ayumi appears, let go of , and you will now have two machine guns blasting at the target; repeat until the armour is destroyed. Even with frequent deaths and two playthroughs you're unlikely to be anywhere near getting this trophy unless you've done some serious farming for it; the place to do that farming is the final room of the ninth chapter, Brutal Town: it's a large room inside the castle, and when you enter it the first time there will be several Chaos Observers you'll have to deal with; killing all of them triggers a new wave that includes a couple of Brutal Zombie Heavies and several Brutal Zombie Fighters - none of the enemies will have Magic Armour when the wave begins; only as you take some of them out will one of them suddenly acquire the armour; across the whole wave you will get two or three enemies with magic armour; if the last enemy is wearing Magic Armour, do not kill him or the wave will end - let him kill you to restart the checkpoint. |

 | Gather Chi | |
| Get the ability to gather Chi. | |
This is story-related and cannot be missed.
In chapter 1, Volcanic Dale, the very first altar you come to will trigger a cutscene in which the altar gives you this ability |
 | Rifle | |
| Find the rifle. | |
This is story-related and cannot be missed.
In chapter 1, Volcanic Dale, you'll enter a room where there will be a dead human adventurer and a rifle next to his body; the game will direct you to pick up this rifle, and you can't progress until you do. |
 | Coral Dash | |
| Get the ability to dash to the corals. | |
This is story-related and cannot be missed.
Chapter 1, Volcanic Dale: in the room where you are first introduced to Humans and Poisonous Spiders as enemies there will be an altar, and you will have to choose this ability from it in order to continue. |
 | Enemy Dash | |
| Get the ability to dash to enemies. | |
This is story-related and cannot be missed.
Chapter 1, Volcanic Dale: after crossing the corals by the broken bridge, you will drop to an area with another altar and, again, you will have to choose this ability from it in order to progress |
 | Time Rewind | |
| Get the ability to rewind time. | |
This is story-related and cannot be missed.
At the end of chapter 1, Volcanic Dale, after defeating the boss, the "fire" or "dragon" version of Ayumi will appear and this ability will be unlocked - you'll need to use it to simultaneously stand on two switches to activate the portal. |
 | Order Spell | |
| Survive Chaos event. | |
This is story-related and cannot be missed.
Chapter 2, Jungle: after the cut scene at the start you will be introduce to "chaos": areas of the game in which colour drains from the screen and Ayumi slows down and finds it hard it to move. Press in order to cast an "order" spell which creates a sphere in which the chaos is negated. As you progress, Ayumi will be attacked by Chaos Monsters - simply defeat them to unlock the trophy. |
 | Free to go! | |
| Kill the Gateguard. | |
This is story-related and cannot be missed.
The boss of chapter 1, Volcanic Dale: in place of arms he has two rocket launchers at about shoulder height; use dash - to lock on to target, to dash to target - to get to the rocket launchers and hack away at them using ; after both rocket launchers have been destroyed, simply focus your attacks on the Gateguard until he breaks into two pieces; get to the pieces and unleash everything you've got on them; if he reassembles before you kill him just repeat that process. |
 | Clear the Jungle | |
| Kill the Shaman Boss. | |
This is story-related and cannot be missed. Please see Your Fire Is Nothing for more information. |
 | Your Fire Is Nothing | |
| Kill the Shaman Boss without taking damage from his massive fire spell. | |
This is the boss of chapter 2, Jungle; he stands on a bridge surrounded by corals; dashing to the corals will lead you right to him on the bridge; hit him with your slash attack a few times until you have enough magic in your gauge to unleash a spell on him (heavy strike is most effective), then dash to a coral to get off the bridge; continue dashing in a circle, wind up on the bridge again, and repeat. His massive fire spell is the one that he launches by floating upward and then crashing down - he'll start glowing just before he begins floating, so you'll have advance warning of it. The radius of the blast is indeed quite wide, and if you get caught dashing between corals while it is unleashed there's a good chance you'll take damage; therefore, it's a good idea to pause for a second at each coral before dashing to the next one; once his blast is finished you can dash quickly to him again. At the start of the fight you will have a full health bar; it is very easy to avoid all damage in this fight, so keep an eye on your health gauge - if you've lost any health you've probably been caught by the outside of his blast; restart the checkpoint in order to try again. |
 | Old Temple | |
| Reach the Sanctuary. | |
This is story-related and cannot be missed.
This will come at the beginning of chapter 4, Temple; at the end of chapter 3, Human Base, you come to a huge open area with a massive gate; a cut scene occurs in which Michelle orders her men to stop you; clear the area and open the gate - advancing triggers the beginning of chapter 4 but you won't be aware of this; you're now on an area with a staircase leading up to a gate, several waterfalls surround you, and there will be several of Michelle's men which you will have to kill from distance. Clear the area, open the gate, advance to the laser trap, and the trophy will unlock. |
 | World of Order | |
| Defeat Skyguard Commander. | |
This is story-related and cannot be missed.
This is the boss fight at the end of chapter 4, Temple, and can be an absolute nightmare if you're not prepared for it. Damage the Commander enough and he will levitate himself and summon several Skyguard Light Infantry and armoured Locusts to fight for him; try to get rid of the Locusts as quickly as you possibly can - they're incredibly fast and can catch you up in a multi-hit combo that is hard to get out of. After you defeat several enemies or enough time passes (either/or), the commander will drop down with a sliding attack - a red target will be on the floor where he's going to drop, so make sure you're clear of the area. Once he's on the ground again, try to get to him and hit him with heavy strikes (or earthquakes if you're getting mobbed by the infantry); keep your health up, too - if you try to get close to him with less than half of your health bar filled, there's a good chance you'll die by any attack. The above process repeats over and over again with one notable exception: occasionally, the Commander will unleash a massive explosive attack - several flares of light will appear on the floor and circles indicating each flare's area of effect will appear after that; usually there is one area of the arena that won't be affected, but it changes each time - hold down to repeatedly dash around the room trying to find that spot; if you can't find it, make sure your health is as full as possible, and get ready to try and time your jump just before the blast comes. Continue the above process until the Commander is defeated. Two things of note here; first: you don't need to kill all the enemies the Commander summons; clear a few to make them manageable, use them to fill your magic gauge, and try to get rid of Locusts early; apart from that, though, don't get sucked into fighting a bunch of them - stay focused on the Commander and attack him every chance you get; second: make sure to have Shadow Friend unlocked for this fight (you can unlock it in chapter 3) - it's a life saver: if your health is low and you can't use your healing ability, a second Ayumi will appear; she'll tear into enemies and they will focus all their attention on her, which allows you to get clear and let your health recover; Shadow Friend is going to be especially necessary for this fight on Hard. |
 | Big Corpse | |
| Defeat Giant Worm. | |
This is story-related and cannot be missed.
This is the boss fight at the end of chapter 5, Desert. The Giant Worm has three tentacles, and each tentacle has two basic attacks: it will either slam down on the ground with a wide area of effect, or it will swoop down and grab Ayumi in its mouth, then slam her into the ground. The swoop/grab attack cannot be dodged, so any time the worm uses it, hold down to rewind time and cancel it out - most times the worm will move on to the slam attack, but if it uses the swoop attack again just rewind time once more. In order to avoid the slam attack, you need to keep an eye on the tentacle that is going to attack you (only one attacks at a time) - when it starts to "wiggle" (I know - ewwww) is the time to move: hold down in order to slide out out of the area. When the tentacle slams down, get to it, hack at it until you have enough of a gauge to cast a spell, then hit it with a Heavy Strike; repeat. After the first tentacle is defeated, the second will attack you and a third will throw boulders at you; also, you'll start to be attacked by Sand Cuttles (the little creatures that jump out of the sand at you); don't bother with the Cuttles unless you need to - just run around and avoid them, and keep your eyes on the tentacle that will attack you. After you've destroyed the second tentacle the third will attack, alternating its attacks with the occasional boulder toss; also the Cuttles will return. Try not to let your health drop below half, as any of the worm's attacks can kill you at that point, always remember to time rewind out of the worm's swoop attack, and this fight should go pretty quickly. |
 | Sky Islands | |
| Leave the Sky Islands. | |
This is story-related and cannot be missed.
This follows the boss fight at the end of chapter 7, Sky Islands. You fight the Skyguard Commander again, but this time the fight is almost laughably easy. You will be in a huge arena and there will be a couple of rocket launchers; shoot the Commander and he'll levitate into the air and summon some Skyguard Rippers (flying enemies); run in a circle on the outside of the arena (by a circle I simply mean run around the entire perimeter of the arena) and just keep firing at the commander - if you run around the perimeter the Rippers won't even come close to hitting you and they can just be ignored; the Commander will eventually drop down, but if you stay mobile he likewise won't come anywhere close to hitting you. The one thing you have to be wary of is if he launches an area of effect shockwave - you'll have to jump over it which means dropping the rocket launcher; after dodging it, simply get the launcher back and continue shooting the commander. |

| Kill the Vicar of Chaos. | |
This is story-related and cannot be missed.
This is the boss fight that ends chapter 8, Brutal Lands. At the start, the Vicar will be powered by two Brutal Mauls; the power he gets from them enables him to use a spell that sucks you up to him and lets him throw you down to the ground. Use time rewind to create a clone of yourself that the Vicar will focus on, then get to each Brutal Maul and kill them (they're much easier to kill than usual) - this takes away the "vacuum" spell. Now things are straightforward: use dash to fly to the Vicar and hack at him; when he uses his "spinning blade" attack, simply put enough distance between the two of you to be able to turn and shoot him with a machine gun (you can use time rewind in order to do more damage to him, but beware: if you rewind time too far you'll actually restore health to him). Alternate between these two attacks - dashing and shooting - and the Vicar will be easy to deal with. |

At a certain point in Chapter 10, Dragon Temple, Ayumi will be urged to jump - so jump! |
 | Keeper Is Dead | |
| Finish the game on any difficulty level. | |
The boss fight against the Keeper comes in three stages: Stage One: it's you vs. the Keeper; he will be protected by magic armour - when the armour is red, you need to use an ice spell ( , ); when the armour is blue, you need to use a fire spell ( , ); two casts of the regular forms of those spells will destroy his armour, and once it's down hit him with a Heavy Strike (which does the most damage to him by far). His attacks in this stage will consist of a string of fireballs (fly diagonally towards him - + to fly - to avoid the fireballs), a freezing shockwave, and an area of effect ground pound. On normal difficulty this stage isn't too bad - keep your health up and try to be rapid with your attacks and he'll go down pretty quickly. Hard difficulty is a whole other beast, however: a direct hit from his fireball attack will kill you; an indirect hit will drain almost all of a full life bar. You need to be quick but strategic on hard - if, for example, you're at half health and can't heal yourself any further, don't rush him and risk being wiped out by a fireball; just be patient and wait for your health to recover. The fight is basically the same, you just have to be a bit more aware of your health and his attacks. I also recommend the following equipment (all of which you should have by the end of your Hard playthrough): Swords of Pain: Health buff, and Rage doesn't completely reset after receiving health points Dragon Claw Rifle: Increase the range of Heavy Strike, more damage against armoured enemies Amulet of Strong Health Increase total health, increased resistance to ranged damage Mysterious Ring: Increase speed The health buffs stack, and the speed increase should help considerably with dodging the fireballs (which have a ridiculously wide blowback effect). Stage 2: Michelle and Zero run around destroying some machinery that prevents the portal from opening, and it's your job to keep the Keeper busy while they're doing it; luckily, there are waves of monsters attacking him as well, so this is the easiest stage of the fight; if you're not worried about how long it takes, just keep your distance and shoot him with your rifle; if you want things to go faster, occasionally get close to him with enough magic to cast a spell and destroy his shield; however you play this part, Michelle and Zero will destroy four things and the portal will activate. Stage 3: You're back where you began, and the Keeper has tried to follow you through the portal but is stuck. During this stage you will have to defeat waves of monsters and avoid a spell cast repeatedly by the Keeper that has a truly ridiculous area of effect. Defeating each wave of monsters allows you to attack the Keeper directly for a few seconds, then he knocks you back and you'll have to defeat another wave of monsters to get another crack at him. There's not much to say about this stage: Michelle and Zero cannot die, so if you're out of health don't think twice about retreating and buying yourself some time. As mentioned, the Keeper's spell covers a ridiculous amount space - don't dawdle in it, as it does a ton of damage. The only thing that really needs to be pointed out here is that you should always let Michelle and Zero get to the Keeper first: he will always do a ground pound when the first person runs up to him, so let your cohorts run up there and get smacked, then follow afterwards. Clear waves of enemies, then attack the Keeper, and cast Heavy Strike when you get the chance. |
 | Hard Times Are Over | |
| Finish the game on the Hard difficulty level. | |
Go to chapter select and replay the game on the Hard difficulty level. Things won't be considerably different on this playthrough, with the main difference being that enemies hit for a lot of damage - some regular enemies can take you out with two direct hits. The good things about this difficulty are that all of your items from your normal playthrough carry over, and all of the chests will be restocked with new goodies to be found. Be patient in this playthrough until you're used to how much damage you take, and never be afraid to snipe enemies from afar (or even from close range) - in many situations you can thin out a group of enemies or even clear an entire room by finding a safe perch and unleashing machine gun fire on enemies (with extra help from some time rewind clones). Abuse Earthquake on Hard difficulty: it requires no magic gauge and can be used endlessly; any time you're being mobbed pull this move out of the bag to clear some space and get clear. Shadow Friend and Rage Saving are the big life savers for this playthrough - if, for some bizarre reason, you chose not to acquire these abilities from the altar in your first playthrough, do so immediately: Shadow Friend will be indispensable against a few bosses and even during some regular encounters; Rage Saving allows you to cast more than one spell consecutively as long as you have enough magic in your gauge. A final tip is to micromanage your equipment; every item has at least one buff attached to it, and if you're having a hard time with anything you can swap out equipment to suit your current predicament. An example of this would be if your health gets low enough that Shadow Friend is activated: Shadow Ayumi can wreak a great deal of havoc, and as soon as she's activated you can press to go into your equipment tab and equip the Figured Amulet and the Magic Ring, both of which buff the effectiveness of Shadow Friend - now watch Shadow Ayumi singlehandedly slaughter 3 or 4 enemies all on her own. You can swap out equipment as often as you like, and the buffs take immediate effect, so play around and see what works for you. |
