How do you unlock hard difficulty?

Sorry if this has been asked before or is in a thread here. I can't seem to find a CLEAR answer.

Can you unlock hard by beating it on easy or do you have to beat it on normal?

I have looked all around on sites and some say normal while some say "just beat the game once".

Yes you can play through on easy to unlock hard, I can vouch for this 100% as I played through on easy for my first play.
