Why is the game so hard for me?????

So I am reading the post in the difficulty rating thread and I feel like I am missing something. The only local coop partner I have is my wife and that ain't happening. I am on the level where you have to blow up the 6 satellites or whatever they are and I am just getting hammered. I am now trying to get past using a second controller and trying not to die at the same time. With Dead Nation there was some strategy involved with the different weapons, but this game it seems to be just shooting the enemies with the same weapon before they kill you.

I will probably get some smart ass answers since this seems to be a real easy game for most, but what am I doing wrong? There must be some strategy I am missing.

Edit: Well I took a little break and came back to it and it is much easier. I watched a walkthrough and I was basically playing the game with one arm behind my back. I wasn't using the special ability (L1) or the melee as much or as well as I should have been. Made it through the 3rd level without dying once while taking out the mine ships or whatever they are. Still not as fun as Dead Nation, but it's ok.

It also really depends on the class you use and what is your specialty.

I dont use melee, so there are a couple of classes that would be out of my interest.
